It will be remember ed the society made the proposition, some weeks •go, that if the city would procure and furnish a suitable building, the physicians would give attention gratis. At the regular meeting of the society, held on Tnesday evening, a committee consisting of Drs. Hammond, Branham, Boyd, Hall, Parker and Green, was appointed to confer with the city council on the subject Tax Parens, Take Notice—That every citi zen in this country may comprehend the present system of taxes, and know how to set in the premises, is a very desirable accomplishment There is but one method to render the matter easy, and it is found in the instructions, tables and laws in the Tax Payer’s Manual. That veteran and reliable bookseller, J. M. Boardman has the only copies for sale in this country. Several hundreds were sold in a few days after their receipt Those interested will do well to seenre copies early. We also found in his ex tensive book end stationery store a large stock of elementary and standard law books, especially adapted to, and selected for, young lawyers. They arc the only books of this character wc learn of in this country. He has also those new s of tho United States that were passed dur ing the last few years, whilst this section was not in peaceable communication with the up country parts. A fine selection of medical books is offered to the profession. One of the best se lections of standard miscellaneous books, novels* Ac., in the South, is in this store, at exccdingly low rates. School books load tho shelves, the choicest llteratuic of the age Is there In all shapes, sises and prices. Photograph albums in variety, and photographs of all characters to suit the market. Fastidiously selected toilet articles, for ladies’ and gentlemen’s use, invite the attention of every one who loves elegant per fumes, superior extreats, fancy soaps, cosmetics, essences, etc., for luxury and health. We found the prices suitable to the fancy of all who wish to purchase, and therforo we urge our Traders to call at the store of J. M. Boardman, corner Mul- borry street and Cotton Avenue, Macon. nov23-d2thurs2tw a f3V* Mr. Smith, who was attacked by several nrgros, near this city, a few mornings since, and severely beaten, mention of which was made in this paper, has so far recovered xs to be able to appear upon the streets. As he was not robbed, the object of the assailants is a mystery. Mr. S. has lost an arm in the Confederate service. placing members elect upon the roll. His course on doubtful precedents is set by tlic house, in absence of judicial ruling, as to construction of law. Watcr Works.—At the meeting held at the city hall, on Tuesday, the importance of Macon being supplied with an ample quantity of water, for domestic, fire and manufacturing purposes, was ably argued by Col. Whipple, and received the concurreaes of all present. The cost of bringinginthe waters of the Ocmulgeewillba In', trifling in comparison with the advantages to be derived. We have heard it stated this object can be accomplished at a coat not exceeding $220,040, and think the works should be built by all means. The city council ht> been requested to memorialise the approaching legislature for such amendment of the city charter as will ena ble the municipal authorities to carry out the wishes of our citiiens in this vital matter. A visit to the large establish ment of J. B. Ross A Sox, during the past week, exhibited to us a scene of business and activity, that we had no suspicion existed in this city. This old and reliable house has a stock' that is nncqualcd in size and quality in any interior city in the South. Every article is sold in bulk, no packages broken. They have everything that a perfect mercantile house can contain. An immense stock of clothing of all verities, quali ty and fashion, crowds a large portion of the es tablishment. A full stock of every species of hardware weighs down tho floors. A constantly supplied and fresh stock of groceries, and at the lowest prices at which they can be sold every where, invites the dealer. The most select qual ities of coflke^ sugar, rice and ail other articles of luxury attract the buyer who wishes to select fob retail trade. The enterprise of the gentle men comprising the firm is unsurpassed. One of the members is constantly in New York, pur chasing for the house, which thereby receives constantly shipments of goods. By this means the immense storerooms are kept full with fresh goods that can be sold at the lowest prices in the market. We found a throngof retail dealers from all parts of the country busily purchasing there and a lively appearance was created by the ship ments that are constantly being made. No greater inducements can be offered to the pur chaser than those offered by the Wrolesalx Bretts of J. B. Rosa A Sox, in Macon. nov23-d2thurs-w2t* Ueoaleteb—About the only sufferer by the fire on Cotton avenue, a few weeks ago, was Mr. Lindsay, an old resident of Macon, and a worthy man. Nothing daunted by misfortune—though bis lose was folly four thousand dollars—ha hi* had his store rebuilt, and is getting in a small flock of family groceries. His energy should be rewarded by his old enstomers. Roinar.—The store of Bronson Jt Bieker, on Cotton avenue, was robbed of about $34 in cur rency and a few articles of little value, on yes terday morning. The proprietors had left the store for a few minutes, and, upon returning, discovered their loss. Whatever defects may be discovered can, if right, lie remedied by the House. In addi tion to the validity and formality of the ere dentiuls should these facts appear, the oth er question which would occur, would be whether States in rebellion arc now in full relation to other States, contemplated by the laws of the United States; or in different language, whether they are completely re stored to the rights and privileges in the Un ion. The question as to whether certain members elect can or cannot take the test oath, will not properly occur until after the election of the Speaker, whose duty it is to administer it to other members before pro ceeding on business or organization. Mitchell County Meeting. At a meeting of the citizens of Mitchell county the following preamble and resolu tions were unanimously adopted, viz: The amnesty oath just administered makes it obligatory on all the seceded States to “hence forth faithfully support, protect and defend the constitution of the United States and the union of the States thereunder.” This union, therefore, should he in sentiment as well as in law, and anything tending to divert or distract the unanimity of that feeling should be punctually and peremptorily discounte nanced. Be it, therefore. Resolved, 1*(. That, as a new system has been ushered upon us as to onr fanning inter ests, and our labor system has been entirely changed, we, as good, loyal and faithful citi zens to the general welfare of our beloved country, look tho matter sternly in the face, ami adopt a pulley that will tend to the best interests of onr people, both white and black. Resohal 2d, That as we have learned that some of our citizens have rented out planta tions to the freedmen of this county; and given the places up exclusively to their con trol, that it is dangerous in the extreme to the white portion of our population to allow freedmen to establish rendezvous to refugees and vagabonds and headquarters for misde meanors and crimes of all characters. Resolced 3d, That we sincerely hope that all our people will join us in tins sentiment, anil discourage renting lands to freedmen un til at least we become satisfied that they ere to be trusted. At present we think it will not only be ruinous to the white people of this country but also to the black. Resolced 4th, That clothing the freedmen with such immunities and raising them in any degree to a level with the whites meets our hearty disapproval and condemnation. Resolced 3th, Thnt every citizen of Mitchell county will use every possible effort to dis countenance any such attempts to undermine our social polity, and, if necessary, take de cisive steps to discontinue such movemcn'9 and contracts. Dr. R. B. Twitty,Chairman. Amos Whitehead, Sec’y. The Stonewall.—The World's spe.'iah speaking of the trip of the Stonewall, tor the. edification of the Parragu court-martial, says her speed was ten miles an hour, which is by no means her maximum. She is said to be very formidable. Her ram projected twenty- five feet from her bow, and lies eight feet un der the watcr. After the trial was completed the general impression seemed to be that Com oro Craven exercised a sound discretion in not attacking her. Had the Niagara’s guns wanted to make any impression on the four inch plating of the Stonewall, the result would probably have been the sinking of the Niag ara by the latter’s ram. The Stonewall is to be hauled into the stream and a gun of the Niagara’s calibre is to be fired at her at adis- tance approximating to that between her and the Niagara at the time Commodore Craven declined to attack her.
