gard to the situation. Notwithstanding im

15th, has the following!
A lodierous mistake was, matte, to-day hy
the imperialists. Some barges of wood" for
GencouChirk, commandant at Brazos, broke
loose above Matamoras and floated past that
place. Two gunboats, assisted by sand bat
teries, opened Are on the barges, and contin
ued it until the barges were post the batteries
and but of range. One of the barges lost
her rudder. It appears the imperialists thought
the barges were liberal rams going down to
damage the fleet at the mouth of the Rio
Grande and blockade the river.
The liberal army is encamped about nine
miles front Matamoras.
Highly important communications had
passed litwecu the imperial commander of
the fleet nnd the Federal commander at
Brownsville, which w ill > cause considerable

An oflicial order was issued by Mejia, on
the llth, prohibiting any one from crossing

the occurence. It is reported that a swift
