as good as those that have rated daring the

York, there is a larger amount of cotton at this
hour, than there ha* been it any time for five years.
The other merchant, says that toe com trade ha*
been active during the' week; that Huff has sold
an immense quantity at <1 25 per trasbel, and the
snpply I* equal to the demand. A physician re
marks, at another table, that there ia no need
for a scare at the Small Pox, because neariy every
body in the city U protected by vaccination, and
otherwise. Also that there are few cases of the
disease amongst the whites. An unn^Mary fright
amongst the people who trade at this point, has
caused them to avoid the city, but the very great
increase of business apparent during the put week,
evinces the fact that people arc becoming sensibly
leas fearful of a shadow. The pleasant and balmy
air of the past few dsys, have given new life to every
thing, and made the season as pleasant as Spring.

The Wholesale Tkadk or Macox.—Lately we'
devoted one beautiful, spring-like day to a tour
amongst the exclusively wholesale houses of this
eity. Seated in the principal entrance of J. W.
Fears & Co’s immense grocery establishment on
Third street, we watched with much interest the
unparalleled quantity of good* that the house
received. Whilst Mr. Fears was checking the
varied receipts of the drays and wagons, that
crowded the street about his storehouse, a man
proffered to purchase a few pounds of nails. lie
was answered by the remark, that four hundred
dollars would not buy one pound of nails in that
house. The explanation was, that the firm hav
ing long felt the necessity of an exclusively
wholesale grocery house in Macon, resolved to
establish such an institution, and that it was their
pride to know that they had succeeded in doing
so. Wo noted the receipts of the day. As an
evidence of the unwonted prosperity of this city
end its enormons trade, we will rehearse the fol
lowing list of articles received and in store; 500
bbls. flour, 400 kegs nails, 100 bbls. potatos, 500
bags shot, 130 kegs powder, 300 boxes star can
dles, 100 bbls. A, B, C sugar, 200 reams wrapping
paper, 50 cases potash, 300 Western reserve and
Hamburg cheese—the sales of which amount to
from 50 to 100 boxes daily—200 bales Ky. bagging,
and as there is little in the market, there is lit
tle probability of supplying the demand, 67
bales gunny bugging, 300 coils of rope, tobacco,
buckets, seives, etc. We concluded that J. W.
FEARS A CO.’S was an immense institution, es
pecially as we could hardly get in a word edge
ways, on account of the pressnre of business ond
the never-ending tide of country dealers, who
were jobbing there.
