—Every day developes some new phase in thi*
really remarlcatU caae—eorne now discovery In
this pwiooa scheme of rascality is daily made
and still w* believe the tangled web is* not yet
fally unravelled, nor all the parties concerned
in the plot yet been traced out, detected and ar
rested. Since our last report in the matter, an
other rascal has been added to the number of
those immediately or remotely concerned In the
robbery—a negro man, who was suspected as the
one who assisted Win, Herrington to carry off
and conceal a portion of the goods stolen. The
end is not yet, and we predict other and more
astounding discoveries that will bo developed in
the trial of the parties implicated in^he superior
coart next Week.
The attention of the justices* court was occu
pied yesterday afternoon in the examination of
Nixon Hancock, the father of the two young men
Indicted yesterday. The point sought td bo es
tablished by the counsel for the prosecution,
seemed to bo bis implication as a receiver of t£e
goods stolen by his sons. , .
As in previous examinations,Mr. Brantley, the
agent of the Southwestern railroad, was the
first, and in this case the only witness intro
duced by the prosecution. Ho stated that be
went with the officers who wont with the search
warrant. In a small shop they found two boxes
of herring, about SO or 40 lbs of tobacco, and two
thirds of a keg of pecan-nuts. These were all
tbe articles corresponding with those lost by Ihe
road that were found in tbe shop of the accused.
Nothing waa found in his house.
The accused resides out ost the Houston road,
near the turnpike. After the things were found
the accused acknowledged to witness that these
things were sent him by his son, John Hancock.
The articles were such as no poor man can afford
for hit own use, and they were evidently placed
there on sale. Witness considered prisoner but
a poor man. The value of the tobacco he thought
about $1 per pound; the nuts he did not know
the value; the herring about $2 par box; and this
was about alL
The accused had no*counsel employed, nor did
he flecin disposed to question tho witness. •*.
After a few remarks from Mr. Hunter, showing
the iraplication of the accuaod, the coos was sub
mitted to the Court, who decided to send the ac
cused before the Superior Colirt, under bonds of
*1,000
The next case was that of George Troutwell,
the negro referred to above, and his appearance
gave at least a darker shade to the proceedings.
Mr. Brantley stated that George had been an
employee of the road, up to the time of arrest,—
Suspecting George, a search warrant was taken I
George and Washington—two poor representa
tives of the “pattern of truth and honesty”—for
entering the OOtton market with nothing but a
couple of ornpty seeks, wherewith to build a
fortune, had the misfortune to excite the ire of
regular traders, were hauled up, and were given
the optioo of and costs a piece, or'fifteen days
tn the guard house. The firat forked over the
“spondulicks;” the latter went hla way mourn
fully. . .y~ p r
Tom Smith—a scion, though rather an off* hot,
wo think, of the .Smithera family—being taken
with a pain in his “stumjack,” coucluded to try
what virtue there waa in “Cincinnati Ready
Relief,” hut unfortunately he took an over-dose
of tho "caraphcnious” floid, which flew to his
head, and when found by the poliec, was trying
to stand thereon, to the huge delight of a crowd
of juveniles. The *‘pcrlicc,” concluded he was
an unlicensed.performer, and the Mayor being
of the same opinion, taxed him $10 and costs for
the one exhibition.
He*’- J—The only transaction calling for adju
dication in thia tribunal on the 5th, (yesterday,)
was that of a sooty youth, who delighted in the
sponsorial and martial title of “Jackson.”—
Though possessed of courage suffipient to storm a
hen roost, or lead a raid on a collard garden, yet
this youthful "tar-dipped” namesake of Old
Iliekory, possessed not a particle of this illustri
ous prototype's moral cqprage, but allowed hira-
•clf to be made a cat's paw by a few ebony color
ed warriors in tho employ of our venerated Uncle
Sammy, on guard in the neighborhood of the new
Armory, and made a desperate sortie on a gentle
man's “green patch.” The ownei not fancying
this movement, and not viewing it in the light
of a “military necessity,” went in on the youth-
ftsl “hickory nut” and captured him. In the
examination before the Mayor, Jackson, notwith
standing the threats of his military allies, of
“shooting him to death,” if he told on them—
threw off the load of guilt that seemed to burden
the upper portion of his “bread-basket,” and
made a clean “chist” of it. As an appreciation
of liis verdancy, His. Honor very kindly loaned
him a set of the municipal jewelry, with which
to amuse himself for the next filtecn days, at the

Witness then went to see the Mayor and report the
caae, when Ills Honor promptly ordered the arrest
of Craig, which was done. After arrest Craig ex
pressed pleasure at Wm. Herrington's eacape.—
Thia was the effects of the Chiefs testimony.
Officer Wm. Avant was next called to stand,
and pretty much corroborated the first poriiop
of Col. Cummings' statement. He saw Craig in
charge of the prisoners late on Friday even
ing, and they scorned to he on pretty friendly
terms. Later in the same night, about X o'clock,
he went into John Herrington's grocery for some
refreshment, ind there saw the latter with Craig
behind the bar; they were not in aetof drinking
when he went in: [buthe*doea not state they did
not doao while he remained.] John Herrington
was urging Craig to lock himself and brother up,
but he awore he would not do it; did not see Wm.
Herrington in grocery.
Craig appealed to witness as to what he should
do; witness told him he was a sworn officer, and
he should do his duty; but he still refused to
act, when witness left. Next morning, in pass
ing, saw Craig and John Ilcrrington, but not
William; asked where he was, and was told by
Craig he had allowed him to go and get his
breakfast. Witness then came down town;
shortly after heard of the escape of Wm. Her
rington. On again seeing Craig, he expressed
pleasure at his prisoner's escape. This was
about all the witness stated.
Craig seemed rather iadlffc-rrnt as to the result,
and did not seek toqurstlon or invalidate the wit
nesses' testimony. At Its close the court bound
officer Craig over lor appearance at the superior
court to tliesnm of #1,580.

drawn their lots from tbe ioarke’, and are not willing to
accept the present offering rate. Tho stock on sale
continues very limited, and is only offered in small
quantities. There are quite a number ef European or
ders in the inaxk. ft, but the rate ia limited, and os little
good cotton is on sale, they cannot be filled at present.
Ib-ices continue very irregular, but yesterday the fe low
ing were the ruling rates, duty paid: Ordinary, nom
inal; low middling. 44; middling, 47; strict middling,
43:good middling, 59.
Tlie dry goods market continues without new fea
tures, except a s’ight decline in prints. There is a good
demand to fill interior and orders from Florida and
Southern Georgia. Tbe stocks are adequate and the
receipts continue good. We quote prints at 2G to 29}£c
per yard, and slnrting, unbleached, 44, 33 to 38c per
yard; bleached shirting, 31 to 35e per yard; De aincs,
40c per yard.
Georgia manufactured goods ore dull and very much
neglected. There Is b»o chang* in prices. Wequot-
yarns at $3 23 to 3 50 per bunch; Georgia shirting, 33 to
S3c per yard.
Cloths are in very good demand, and prices aro much
firmer in consequence of an advancing ie» deucy in the
Northern markets, Csssimeres are selling at $2 to 3 per
yard; Jeans. 03c to $1 per yard.
Tho money market is slightly changed, and tho ra es
for gold are easier. It continues scarce, and the de
mand ia somewhat slight. Brokers are purchasing at
47 o 41} C and selling at 49c premium. Surer continues
scarce and prices very irregu or. In Foreign Exchange
the transaction* are moderate. Brokers sre doing a fair
tMiriness In uncurrcnt money:
