Matos's Corav.—The splice were not idle on Thursday night, as was evidenced by tbe array of sinners who were present iti this court yester day, and who want their ways rejoicing or mourning: D. Sullen, a gay and festive cuts, who had ta ken a n lion to sample various brands of "dead- shot," kept f«r the delectation of youths sportive ly inclined, finally became weak in the back and limber in the knees, ending ^in the bard pave ment flying up and coming in contact with the -end of hi* nose, in which condition he was "Taken up tenderly. Fashioned so slenderly, “Iligh-tlght and bonderly, Drunk as bedad.” and conveyed to the lookup, from whence he was brought before the Mayor, who, in consider ation of the unprovoked sssault made on him by the sidewalk, only required him to settle costs. Tom Hardeman, a colored man, was caught handling property of which be was not the right ful owner, for which he was taxed $5 and costs. An Ethiopian youth, rejoicing in the baptis mal rugnomen of Boh, who was caught “bobbing aronnd” loose, and interfering with other men’s goods, was given the choice of twenty days’ rus- icatfon on anti dyspeptic diet, or pay $5 and l costa. Mary Davis and Ann Wilson, two colored ladies of the highest respectability in their walk of life, bad a falling out, which ended in a little game of gouge and rcratch and a general scatter- ation of wool, for which they contributed $5 and costa. George, colored, for acting in a disorderly manner on the ttreeU, had the tcfeciiofi cf ten days in the cuard hau-c or costs. Bill and Sam, two hitherto fast friends, of the colored persuasion, had a liule “diflikilty”— perhaps a dispute about the division of spoils on their last ehicken raid—and became sworn foes, ending in a little bit of a fist and skull game on the streets, for which they contributed $o and costs. Mary Smith, for disorderly conduct, was called on ftirfi and costs. Tanna, a colored woman, let her temper get the better of her reason, and acted in a bolster- o i« t:» .nner, for which she was required to fork over $j auJ costa, or go to the guard house for ten days Judge and Edmond, two half-clad freedmen, who trouM steal wood, “bekaso dey war cole,” were informed they could depart in peaoe, after depositing about eight dollars in currency, or “keep co»l” for twenty days within the retire ment of the shades of Tom' Knight's castle. George and Aleck were up for disorderly con duct, but the charge was not proven, and they were let off on payment of costs. u«t received »4 the News Depot, Trian gular Block—Sunday Mcreary, New York -Led ger, Dec 30; Army and Xavy Journal; Wide World; New York Review; Saturday Reader; London Illustrated News; London Weekly Times; Boston Pi lot; Braithwaite* Retrospect for July, *4o. and many others. A largo and enthusiastic crowd filki the City Hall. There were old men and young met:, young ladies and boy* and girls— the handsome, the elegant, and the beautiful. We were pleased to *ce present the young orphans of the orphan school, all looking neat and happy. There were about 15 boys and about a dozen girls, and we feel confident that those who notod them, and reflected upon the benefit they were receiving, will never regret that they aided in carrying through this project in their behalf! The di: play of articles, the many-colored lamps, the numerous lights, the excitement of callingont and receiving the various articles, all ogetlier, made a scene loffg to be remembered. ' Many wcie unable to procure seats, and yet mirth aud good humor prevailed. The exhibi tion was kept np to a late hour, and all went home pleased with all they had seen and heard. Many were unable, on account of the crowd, to obtain the articles to which they were entitled. We are requisted to say that those who received .nothing will obtain a present by calling at the Hall this mofning, as it is the intention of the managers to auction off the articles or give them away to the children. t To add to the enjoyment of the evening, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Watkins, with their talented niece. Mi So Shaw, were present, and the two lat ter gave us a "touch of their quality/’ in vocali sation and instrumentation, to which the audi ence testified thflfc rapturous delight. Mrs. Watkins has a clear, sweet voice, the liquldoess of which was well developed in the songs she gave. She concluded her medley song with Dixie?’ which was received with shouts and cheers. Miss Shaw we pronounce the best lady pianist we have ever had the pleatore of listen ing to. Our citizens will have a better oppor tunity of hearing these artistes to night, at Ral ston Hall. Two Hovas or Gexcis* Mirt*.—Mr. aud Mrs. Harry Watkins give one of their unique enter tainments this evening at Ralston Hall, assisted by the eminent young English pianist, Miss Car- lottaShaw. From the extended reputation of the performers, and the high encomiums be. stowed upon the entertainment, both in this country and Europe, those of our.citizens who j visit "Fun-Land” may rest assured of enjoying a ! moat delightful evening's ^amusement Thqjol- | lowing notice from' the Washington Prcs3 will I convey some idea of the nature of the cntcriain- i xnent: AhrsEiiEvT—Two Horns is Fcv L.txn.—Mr. and Mrs. Watkins have found out the great want ofthedav; an amusement which combines mu sic, poetry, comedy, and pathos; an gmuseraent which, while it nffordsTelaxation to the mind, does not debase the intellect, evoking the heart iest laughter without offending the laws of good breeding. In Europe these duo representations are verv fashionable with the aristocracy, and, at the same time, highly popular with the masses. But even in Europe, where the arts have been hitherto more highly cultivated than with our selves, the originatorj of such entertainments as are now being presented at the Assembly Build ings bad much to contend with in the prejudices of custom. People ffho had been habituated to the performances of large companies in cither Opera. Drams, or Ballet did not conceive it pos sible that they could derive sstiafacti >n from the representations of bnt two artists, however great their individual talent. The principal difficulty is to find artists of sufficient versatility to render these du*» entertainments pleasing ; but without such versatility the whole thing would become wraryingly monotonous. Mr. and Mrs. Watkins are peculiarly gifted in this respect, for they ap pear capable of doing almost anything. They dance, they sing, they instrunientalize, and make some wonderful transformations of character, and with such rapidity, that did w© not know to the contrary, we should suppose they had the assistance of confederates. No greater nroof of tbeir success can be given than the fact that they arc abeut to enter upon their fourth week. Sheriffalty.
