In the present scarcity of bosineze bouses, and the fabulous rents they command, the erection of stores and residences on the burnt districts, at the inter section of Molberry and Third ‘.treats, First and Mulberry, and also the seen© of late conflagra tion on Cotton Avenue, between Poplar and Cherry streets, could bo made to pay. To gobble turkeys, cost our peoplo five dollars x chance. We put our serious protest on roost against such Turkish extortion, though we sup pose that when we are in Turkey, we must do as the turkey* do, be cat up. Tax Cocsty Jail.—Nothing has been done in the matter of rebuilding the Bibb county jail, destroyed by firo some two month ago, with the exception of the presentment of the grand jury, asking that it bo speedily put up. Tho import ance of such a building to the county and qity cannot be over-estimated, and the appropriation for the purpose should be at once made and ope rations commenced. The police jail is filled to repletion with municipal, Stale and Federal of fenders, so many being crowded into one cell as to create disease among them. We hope to see the matter receive prompt attention, and a new and stronger building arise from tho ashes of the old jail—a monument to the liberality of the State, and a terror to evil doers.
