A portion of the scaffoldingon the up stream side of the bridge, and near the center pier, has been carried away by the mass of drift east against it, causing that portion of the superstructure to swag. This, though an in- convenience, docs not naturally interfere with the work. .Strenuous efforts are being made to repair the damage, and should no farther seci- t happen, the work will rapidly progress. It is thought that, with favorable weather, the bridge could be completed in eight or nigedays. Also, 1 Holiday AmcsBmeSTs.—Bells end dancing parties were the order of the night on Tuesday evening; first among which was the ball of the le of Macon, at their new Hall. The ball room was beautifully decorated with ever greens, flowers and banners, and quite a crowd of “fair women and brave men” assembled to chase the idle moments with flying feet, and mirth and pleasure reigned supreme, and ina.le the hour of parting the only iad one of the many delightful ones spent in the giddy mazes of the walUeand dance, and the company dispersed in tho small hours highly pleased with*this, the first ball of the Fenians. At the houses of many of our citizens the hap py hours wore spent in the enjoyment of the “poetry of motion," social parties, etc., where fun and frolic reigued supreme, and many a fes tive youth retired with his bosom brimfull of J the exhilersting juice of the vine, with fond wishes for the speedy return of the holiday season. Hakbt Watxi.vs.— The /srowell }>eforiiianee of this popular couple was to have taken place laat evening, but in con- aequenceof the heavy fall of rain during the greater part of yesterday, the benefit w*a juJi- ciously postponed until to-night, when we hope L> see Ralston Hall filled'to its utmost capacity. Huch a tribute to tbe great merits of these distin guished artists is justly doe from our citizens.— Macon is not often visited by dramatic talent of & high order, and to^encourage such visits, we rthould not fail to show that we can and will ap preciate an entertainment which blends refine ment and intellectuality with amusemeot. Mr. and Mrs. W. have prepared a capital bill for the occasion. Mias Carlotia Shaw, the em inent pianist, will execute several of the most brilliant morceaux of the great composers, while Mrs Watkins, in addition l.j f.iV.-riL- ball.oN, will deliver tbe grand scena of ‘•The Maniac,” founded on Monk Lewis’ famous poem—the mu sic by Mary Russel. The whole will terminate with a well-done “Domestic Broil” entitled “It Takes Two To Quarrel”—a chapter from the do mestic history of the Ilotwaughter family. The title is suggestive of uproarious fun, and in the hands of Mr. and Mrs. Watkins and Mias Shaw there can be no doubt but that the broil will be “well done.” There can be no postponement this evening, as the arrangements of Mr. and Mra. W. compel them to start immediately for New Or leans, £ v \ National Ci nRKNcr.—“I say, Johnson, atop a minute; why aro you in such a hurry ?** “Well, it’s because I want some lino clothing, and l understand that A. The Weather—The warm and pleasant weath er of Monday and Tuesday has again given place to clouds, gloom and rain, and a fellow is once more “sloshing around” in mud and water, iu hirquest after the latest item with which t«» re gale the reader. Even before these remarks on the never failing theme of tho weather i» placed before you, we may have had a change for the better or worse, and thus another item be fur- uiahed on this inexhaustible subject. Abas ver- AmtTican immigration would be welcomed by tlie Brazilian public have been realized in the kind reception given by the president and inhabitants of S&n Paulo to Gen. Wood «sd his colleagues. ^ From a letter received from Dr. Warne we extract the following satisfactory account of their reception which, independent of the de sire of all classes to encourage immigration, was to I*? expected from the proverbial hoa * pi tali ty of the Paulenseg. “Tlie next day, at 9 a. m., the prcttylittle city of St. Paulo was revealed to os, and on a more thorough acquaintance with it-and the people, we are satisfied that our first con viction-* were right. They have treated us like friends and brothers since our arrival.— The president promised everything we want ed, and is now making due preparrtions to start us on our journey to-morrow morning. The president called on us yesterday m full military costume, and the city conncil sent a deputation to wait on us with an address wel coming us to Brazil, etc. The president also put at mir M-rvir.-. hi hov m tin* theatre, which we ted, along with many other civilties. I cannot sufficiently express my and our pleasure at the treatment of every body in the city to us. We shall long remem ber them.” The Rev. Mr. Dunn, of Louisiana, also has had an interview with the minister of agri culture, and was delighted at the frank and liberal ideas expressed by his excellency on the subject of religious forms and differences of belief. Mr. Dunn has, likewise, received from the imperial government the same gen erous facilities for r. costless examination of any province he wishes to inspect, as hayc been afforded to Gen. Woad and other persons from the United States. On the arrival of the Havana, the pioneer vr ufthf iieu r l.iMi-ln-< i > f i.iiii niailline between Brazil and New York, the minister of Agriculture, not content with the orders issued by him to the official agent of coloni zation to proceed on board the vessel to af ford facilities for the disembarkation of any emigrants that may arrive, himself went on board, attended by his private Secretary, with the object of seeing what further measures could lie adopted for smoothing their way.
