Avoid Poison.
Invalid reader, do yon know what nine-tenths of
the bitter compounds yon are solicited by the propri
etors to accept as universal panaceas are composed oft
Give heed for a moment. They are manufactured
from nnpnrified alcohol, containing a considerable
portion of Jueil oil—% poison almost as deadly as
prussic acid. The basis of the Tegular tinctures
of the Materia Uedica is the same. No amount
of “herbal extracts” can overcome the had tendency
of this pernicious element. The essence of sound Rye,
thoroughly rectified, is the only stimulant which can
be safely used as a co'mponent of a tonic, alterative
and anti-bilious medieine, and HOSTETTER’S
STOMACH BITTERS is tho only medical preparation
in the world in which this article is used as an ingre
dient. Hence, the extraordinary effects of this great
specific. It gives strength without producing excite
ment. No other tonic does this. All tho ordinary
Bitters flash the face and affect the brain. HOSTET
TER’S BITTERS diffuses an agreeable calm through
the nervous system, promotes digestion and produces
sleep. No other tonic so quickly revives the exhausted
physical energies, restores the appetite and removes
the gloom and depression which always accompanies
weakness of the bodily power. It purges from the
system the morbid hnmors which retard its natural
functions, and which bring paleness to the cheek and
suffering to the brow. It banishes thosa clogs npon
pleasure, restores the system to high health, and nec
essarily proves a valuable adjunct to the digestive or
gans. A trial is all that is needed to establish it in the
confidence of the skeptic.

The Radical Congress.
Washington. May 15.—The Senate was not in
session to-day.
House.—Tho lctter of tho Missouri Congressional
delegation to Senator Henderson was up as a question
of privilege. Several Missouri Representatives said
the objectionable letter was written, and theinterview
obtained, at the instanco of Henderson. Considerable
excitement ensued; but the Speaker deciding it was
not a privileged qnesticn. and several members ob
jecting to its present consideration, the House pro
ceeded with the regular order.
Mr. Wilson was proceeding to explain a private hill,
when Mr. Woodward, who was the authorof the reso
lution censuring the Missouri delegation, desired to
know what the gentleman from Missouri, Mr. Pile,
who was near him, meant by distorting his face; he
was not accustomed to being italked to in grimaces
and cabalistic signs.
The Speaker rapped the House to order, and asked
for what purpose the gentleman from Pennsylvania
rose—if it was a question of order, tho gentleman
from Iowa could be taken off the floor, bnt not other
wise.
Mr. Woodwarddesired to know what the signs and
facial contortions of tho gentleman from Wisconsin,
Mr. Pile, meant. The manner in which they were
made was more befitting tho Five Points than this
hall.
Tho Speaker reminded Mr. Woodward that the last
remark was notin order.
Mr. Woodward, resuming, said that the gentleman
had come toward him making cabalistic signs, of this
style (patting his thumb towards his nose and gyrant-
ing his fingers) and that he conld not understand that
language.
Mr. Pile disclaimed any intention of imult.
Mr. Woodward said as the gentleman belonged to
the party that claimed to possess all the morality of
the country (eries of order on the Republican side)
ho wanted to know whatfhe signs meant.
Mr. Myers, of Pennsylvania, desired to know if the
remarks of his colleague would go in the Globe ot
tered as they were, ont of order.
The Speaker said the gentleman had risen to a ques
tion of order and his remarks wonld go in the Globe.
Private bills were resumed and the House ad-
journod.
From Washington.
Acquittal of tlie President Coneeded.
No Action Probable To-day.
Washington, May 15 — Noon. — Representatives
Randall and G 0 v. A. J. Hamilton, of Texas, had a
rencontre to-day. Hamilton struck Randall ever the
head with a cane. The parties were immediately sep
arated. Farther difficulties are apprehended.
The siek Senators are improving.
The managers do not contemplate presenting new
articles.
The Connecticut Repnblican Legislative cancus have
nominated Buckingham for the U. S. Senate.
No new impeachment developements. The Senators
who favor acquittal say the President is safe.
Washington, May 15, p. h.—The ultimate acquittal
of tho President seems to be conceded to-day. Off
setting meetings and resolutions, which have all been
published, are very many. Private dispatches to un
committed Senators, from home sources, urge them
to act according to their consciences, and assure them
that the impeachment furor inartificial. Replying to
the Missouri delegation. Senator Henderson appears
to have said that conviction wonld have failed with
out, and could not have been secured with, his vote.
In his opinion, the second artiele wonld have been de
feated by two and the eleventh by four votes.
The impeachment managers appear to have aban
doned yesterday’s project, whatever that may have
been. They hod no meeting to-day. A vote to-mor
row is eonsidered improbable. Senators Howard and
Conkling are still confined to their beds. Mr. Grimes
is better. Mr. Morton is on the street.
The Star says there is alnll in the impeachment ex
citement, partly from the impression that the question
will not be taken np and finally decided to-morrow.
Some of tho managers are for postponement, while
others, it is known, are in favor of disposing of for
onco and for all a question that is now only serving to
weaken and distract the Repnblican party. Some
Repnblieana believe that it will be policy to get rid of
the impeachment matter as a feature of the coming
Presidential canvass, to move on to fresh fields and
pastures, where all training nnder the Repnblican
standard can rally to a common issue.

Shooting Affray In Eufanla.
On Thursday afternoon, in the cotton ware
house of D. F. Johnson & Co., a yonng man
named Arthur Dickerson shot and perhaps
fatally wounded a very popular and mnch
esteemed negro man, in that community, named
Prince Petty. No cause for the rash act of Mr,
Dickinson was given by Prince, as is asserted by
a negro who witnessed the shooting. The witness
says Prince walked up to Dickerson and asked
him, “if the old man was in,” alluding to Dick
erson's father; whereupon, Dickerson replied
“I will show you who the old man is,” and
drawing his pistol fired, the ball passing throngh
the negro’s head. Mr. D. was a little intoxicated
at the time. He immediately fled, and has thus
far eluded the search of officers who are in pur*
suit of him. Theaffair produced quite a sensation
among the citizens of Enfanla, and is universally
regretted on account of the unexceptionable
character of both parties.

The Moon, as Seen Through Professor Davis’
Big Telescope.
Correspondence Louisville Courier J
The magnifying power of the telescope
with his lens is 500 times, -which makes the
moon appear almost near enough to an ob
server for him to converse with its inhabitant?,
if there are any, and they understood our
language. But Professor Davis thinks that
the moon has no atmosphere, and consequent
ly cannot possibly sustain any animal or veg
etable life on its surface. And, surely, its
appearance to an unscientific observer would
lead him to that conclusion.
The surface of the moon where the sun
shines on it clearly appears nearly white, and
like a large, deep bed of lime mortar, into
which stones lrom the size of, large rocks
down to small pebbles had been thrown and
sunk, and the mortar had suddenly hardened
as soon as the stones had disappeared, leav
ing the space they occupied in sinking only
partially filled up. These Professor Davis
thinks are the crateTS of extinct volcanoes.—
In other places were to be seen ridges or ele
vations, some of which were very, abrupt, ap
parently only a few inches high. These, he
said, are hills and mountains, some of which
are over two miles high. Their shadows in
the sides opposite the sun were almost as dis
tinct as that of a row of buildings near by,
and from their shadows an astronomer can
calculate their height with as much compara
tive accuracy as an engineer can a hill or
mountain on the earth by their shadows.
In our observations of the moon that even
ing the superiority of Prof. Davis’ lens over
those of most other large telescopes was very
apparent. There was no blurred or hazy ap
pearancein looking through it, and the moon,
instead of looking pale and flat, like a half-
baked pan cake, as it does to the naked fiye
or through inferior telescopes, shows its ro
tundity or globular form as distinctly as an
orange in the band, and its light and shady
portions are very distinctly contrasted.
Col. John G. Coltart, of Huntsville, died in
the Lunatic Asylum at Tuscaloosa, on the
16th ult., where he had been taken a few
weeks previous at his own request. He was
Colonel of the 7th and 50th Alabama Regi
ments, during the late war, and distinguished
himself in several battles, especially that of
Bentonville, North Carolina, in which he
commanded a division.
Estimates op the Cotton Crop.—At
meeting of the principal cotton dealers in
Charleston last week, estimates of the next
cotton crop were made. The estimates range
from 2,200,000 bales to 2,300,000 bales, with
a lew estimates somewhat over the latter
figure.
