Ganu,Rm»n -Nothing ha* transpired during
the past week to materially alter the condition of
the general trade of the city. Cnontry merchant*
and planters have not come forward *a freely to
lay in their rtocka and supplies as was desirable,
bat numerous orders bare been receded from the
southern and southwestern portions of the State,
and these h*Te kept parties engaged in the whole
sale and jobbing trade generally basy.
The money market exhibits unabated ease, cur
rency is abundant, and the demand for accommo
dation on the part of firet-class borrower* is rather
limited, on account of the unsettled and drooping
condition of the cotton market We give below
carefully revised quotations:

THURSDAY MORNING, MARCH 3, 1869.
Sett Bac*.—Joe Wagner and Henry Gilbert, alia*
Bostic, escaped penitentiary convicts, who were ar
rested in tbia City last week, were sent back to their
work on the Selma, Boms and Dalton Railroad yes
terday morning. Their thieving accomplices who
live here and were arrested about the earns time, are
still held in jail. Joe Wagner, the leader of the
gang, is a most desperately bad negro, and as be
has so frequently escaped from the labor be owe*
the State as a convict, we earnestly hope be will re
ceive the closest attention and guard by those who
have him employed on the above named road. It is
dear that be does not intend to reform or forsake
hi* evil ways, and be is, therefore, not entitled to
that leniency and kindness which the keepers of
prisons often extend to convicts, who properly be
have themselves and manifest feeling* of shame
and regret at theirmiadeeda and imprisonment Joe
has escaped three different times from the peniten
tiary, and instead of taking advantage of ins liberty
to secure labor on some plantation, where Ins crimes
would be forgotten and where he could make an hon
est living, he returns to the scenes of bis infamous
lifq and repeats the very acts which sent him to the
penitentiary. What Justice or common sense is there
in dealing leniently with such a rascal ?

The past week baa disclosed some marked alter
ations in the movement of the leading staple. On
one or two days it showed a rapid recovery of the
net decline at which the market dosed on Wednes
day last, bat since Friday prices have steadily tended
downward and the gain of Tuesday of last week has
been almost wholly lost. This fluctuation is exclu
sively attributable to the variations in tbs Liverpool
and New York cotton markets, and to the erratic
condition of gold and foreign exchange. The offer
ing anpplies here have been of an unusually restricted
character for the past week, as most factors stren
uously resisted all applications for eoncrosinns. and
kept their samples covered, while several of our
largest buyers have remained entirely passive, the
asking prices being uniformly above their limits.
The market to-day was quiet, and the offering stock
