Correvnondnta W the Maeon Rai>t Telegraph. ] AT
Bichkoxd, Texas, February 28,1&69.
This is my fourth year in this country, bnt I
have never aeen planting operations as back
ward a* they are at preaeni. This is owing to the
vast amount of rain that has fallen during the
winter, preventing'fannea from planting. Very
few have more than half their com land ted
ded, and no one has touched his cotton ground
with the plow.
The high price that cotton now commands will
induce every one to strain his last link in its
production in this section. No doubt the same
unwise course will be pursued by farmers East
of the Mississippi.
But here the fanner can stand a abort crop of
com better than with yon. His plow stock can
* winter it on the prairie*, and for subsisting bis
family beef is never lacking. If no disaster be
falls the coming crop of cotton it will certainly
be a mammoth one, considering the inefficiency
of a large portion of the labor engaged in ito
production. Then down topple tha prices to
twelve or fifteen cents, and those engaged in ito
production to the exclusion of com almost en
tirely, are bound to be bruised, if nottmried in
the debris of tho wreck, beyond the hope of res
urrection.
Unless the Southern poople have the self de
nial to praodee those leant* which past expe
rience has taught them on the cotton question,
there never was as promising s prospect for a
future famine aa the present price of cotton
holds out. But if those engaged in farming
will only

spare
how strong the pecuniary temptation to deviate
from this wholesome rule, the future of the
South is an assured success—one that may be
considered as already accomplished.
The good advice and sound suggestions con
tained in those elegantly written articles in the
Tkucobaph, signed "Lawyer," ought to bear
the legitimate fruit of causing those engaged in
agricultural pursuits to profit by the wholesome

not been compressed in the same space, since

easily exhausted and of almost paramount pub

Of course it contains more than this. There
are two other counties containing over a million
of acres. — ■■■’*.
According to the (ax returns for I8C7, Nuioes
county was ahead of all others in live stock,
having 15,568 horses, valued at 9248,425. The
number of sheep was 149,637, valued at 9168-
087; the number of Cattle 138,588, valued at
9672,177. These valuations may seem low, and
so they are. But your readers are not to be told
that a hen property pays an iidmtlorem tax, it
is not often valued by its owners altogether aa
high os it “raought be.”
The county whose land sustains the highest
average value, bears tha evar to be honored
name of Washington, which is 98 37 per acre,
l’retty good for these distracted times. The
lands in Webb are valued by their ownrjs at
less than any other foUnty in tho State, being
the very moderate sum of bine cents an acre.
That would be a good county in which a man
could own a loudly number of broad sores with
a small capital, but whether it would be a good
place for him to keep his scalp on hia head, to
another queation.
Galveston to the richest county in the State,

The total number of horses returned by the
Assessors omitting twenty-three counties fur
which no returns'were nude to 507,163 valued
at £18,993,984. Ever}- one has an interest in the
beef question. Total cattle, with the above
exoeption, 3,858,029, valued at $16,856,675.
The wool question concerns everybody of a
cold day. The total number of speech omitting
the counties left out in the oount of horses to,
1,323,556 valued 91,875,406. It to hardly ne
cessary to repeat that the real value of proper
ty is greatly depreciated in its owner's estima
tion whan taxed according to its value. The
total property in the State taxed omitting the
twenty-five counties alluded more than once to,
$170,005,545, according to the Assessors return.
Of couse the real value to hugely in excess of this.
The above to taken from Bichardson’s Texas

reader who feels an interest in anything that
relatea to the material condition of the State.
But I suppose I have given enough on the sub

NOVEL RELIGIOUS CEREMONY.
Conversion ol a Christian Malden to
Judaism and Her Marrluge to an
Israelite.
The second instance of a Chicago Christian
adopting the Jewish faith and being admitted to
membership in that Church, to that of Miss Ma
ry Gilmore, formerly of Detroit, Michigan.
Particular intereto is attached to this case, from
the feet tha she was e Catholic, it being gener
ally conceded that that Church has a stronger
hold on its members than other denomination
of Christians. Aa in the other instance, a pros-
pective husband was the paramount reason for
deairing conversion.
The oeremoniea were held in the Brothers of
Peace Synagogue, located on the comer of Third
avenue and Harrison street. About ten minutes
after eleven o'clock the convert came up the
main aisle, accompanied by Mrs. Julia Barnett
and Mrs. Sarah Snider, taking a sea to the left of
the altar. She was attired ins neat fitting white
taritan dress, with no ornament except a white
silk scarf, which encircled her neck. She wore
e "Grecian Bend” hat, trimmed with blue, with
a large white feather in front. Miss Gilmore to
decidedly good looking, and unquestionably
will make Hr. Bemey Berlyn, the gentleman
whom she ha-s .selected os a life partner, happy.
The advent of ihe'Babbi, the Bev. Dr. Mes
sing, wis looked for with anxiety. He entered
the church dressed in his robes, in a short time,
and took a position in front of the altar. There
were now about 300 persons present. Miss Gil-
more was conducted to the altar by the sexton,
^ Mr. Louis B-iehar.ich, when the following col-
v loquy took place, the young lady answering the
questions in a clear and distinct voice, the au
dience maintaining the strictest silence during
the exercises:
Babbi.—Miss Mary Gilmore, as yon present
yourself with the of joining 'Jew-
faitb, that tho
Hto coming be
delayed, I will still, in daily hope, patiently
await bis appearance.
13. I believe, with a perfect faith, that there
will be a resurrection of the dead at a time when
it shall please the Creator, (blessed and exalted
be Hto name forever and ever.)
The Babbi then took Miss Gilmore by the
hand, led her into the altar, opened the door,
and expoaed the Taurah to view, at the same
time asking the question: Do you know the
meaning of this, and the origin thereof ?

They then resumed their former position in
front of the alter, and the colloquy was contin

the presence of the people, by the power in
vested fn me as minister of this congregation,
os accepted a member of our nation, in which
I congratulate you, slater Leah, in tho name of

The Babbi then shook hands with her, and
the ceremony was over.
At one o'clock the bride end groom presented
themselves before the altar and were married,
consummating an event, an aoconnt of which,
from its not being daily witnessed, will be read
with pleasure and interest.

sixteen inches lo tbs drill, on which I bod five thon
nnd .even hundred stalks of cotton. From this. I
gathered (1831) eighteen hundred and twenty-four
pounds of cotton. The last of August, tho worm com
mitted great ravages in it, destroying til ef tha late
crop. Had it not been for the worm I should have
mad. at least one-third more on tbs land. I can cheer
fully recommend it to Planter* as a Fertilixer for eot-
ton. Respectfully.

Monox Cocxtt, Ga.. Jan. 4,1869.
Mr. Ota. Dugdalt, Baltimore. Md. t
Dear Six—I made an experiment upon Cotton tho
past season with Baugh’s Raw-Bono Phosphate. I
used it st tho rate of only One Hundred Pounds Par
Acre applying it in the row with tho seed, and the
yiol8 of cotton from toad to whieh the Phosphate wae
applied, was One Hundred Par Cent, greater than
from land on whieh no fertiliser was used: the differ
ence being eo great that I could see to the very row
where I stopped dropping the Phoephate. f
I can, with confidence, recommend Baagh’e Raw-
Bone Phoephate as being a reliable and satisfactory
article. , ,
Very truly yours. .
