represents them to be, the appropriation is sto
len money, and he as a good, loyal, honest gen
tleman shonld not receive stolen money. The
Legislature owes it to its own self-respect, to
the respect due to their constituents who sent
them here, believing them to be gentlemen, and
to the dignity of the State of Georgia to vindi
cate themselves and to take suitable action lot
that purpose.
COSOBESS.
The Radicals are quite bouyant in spirit and
look with high hope for a new regime—all of
which is to bo indicted by Congress at their
dictation.
General Grant and Congress are entirely at
the disposal of the “black wing” tinder the lead
of Bullock and Blodgett, and the reapppoint-
ment of the latter as Postmaster at Augusta is
hailed as a happy augury for the accomplish
ment of their full designs. They say that re
construction will now be perfected to their sat
isfaction- -after their notions of reconstruction.
What does that word mean now ? Webster
didn’t know, nor Walker, nor Johnson. Inter
preted according to the Southern, and I regret
to say the Northern radicals views, it simply
means—yon rebels have not yet realized the
fact that you are slaves and that slaves you
must continue to be, for you are now in our
power and we have determined to grind yon
even to the very marrow of your bones.
• Slaves lie down and Idas jour chains,
To the Union yield in quiet.
Were it hemlock in your veins,
Stand it, must you—profit by it.
There is more truth than poetry in the above
lines, if I might use a common expression.
OFFICE BCKTEBS.
There is quite a rush of stragglers to Washing
ton from this State. Those who have been left
out by the State Government either because they
were not radical enough, or because they were
unworthy of notice, are now harrying “ in hot
haste,” loaded with petitions and memorials to
lay at the feet of the idol of whom they have
been dreaming for lo! these many month*
Won’t our good friend. President Grant, , have
a fine time when he is surrounded by this swarm
of locusts. Verily, be will find oat when, per
haps, it is too late, that it would be much easier
work summoning his Generals around him and
ordering the dram and the bugle to peal out his
commands.
Among those gone from Georgia, I understand,
is J. E. Bryant, whose object is to try and oast
Blodgett from his new appointment. I have
been told that he says that that little perjury
matter has not yet been cleared np, and that
there are some other small things which will not,
when reconsidered at Washington, sound so well
in Blodgett’s behalf. It ia a mighty hard thing
to see two such faithful pests at dagger's ends,
but let them “fight it out on that line,” aay I.
Bryant did not ask leave of absence, yet I pre
sume his per diem will go on. That worthy
S iraon, J. H. Caldwell, is also at Washington.
e went some days ago with the resolutions
drawn np by himself, Sam Bard and Bryant, and
read at their meeting a few weeks amoe. It
may be, however, that Caldwell will endeavor

Culture ef Sugar-Cane In Dooly.
Viisnu, Ga., March 8th, 1869.
Editors ATacon Telegraph :—I herewith send
yon the details of an experiment of mine last
season in the cultivation of the West Tndia Su
gar Cane. I selected one-half acre of land
(measured,) which had been partially cow-penn
ed, broke it np as deeply as I could with long-
straight shovel plows,—rows laid off five feet
wide with a long-shovel plow, commencing at an
opposite end with a similar plow and opening out
the same furrows as deeply as possible, then drop
ped seed cane in the bottom of said farrows. After
applying seventy bnshels of partially killed cot
ton seed to the half acre in the drills, I covered
the cane and manure by tunning deeply two
farrows to each row. Just before the cane com
menced to come np, I took a common weeding
hoe and cot the dirt off the cane to within about
an inch of it as it lay in the furrows. The ob
ject of this was to get rid of a thick coat of grass,
and to secure an early good stand of the cane.
The first plowing was done deep and close with
the same plows with which the crop was planted
After culture, entirely with sweeps as shallow
as possible, merely scraping off the grass and
weeds, from this half acre of land, I boiled two
hundred and seventy-two gallons of good thick
syrup. I also made an excellent brown sugar.
The sugar and syrup will both compare favora
bly with the best New Orleans.
I send yon the result of this experiment in or
der that yon may know what we can do in rais
ing premium crops of sugar and syrap in Mid
dle and Southern Georgia on our common pine
land, by proper fertilizers and cultivation.
I will send yon a sample of the sugar and syrap
the first opportunity.
Yours, .Ac., Jobs H. Woodwaed.

Oh, is there aught on earth more dear,
Its sorrows to begnile,

When on its mother’s gentle form
Bo trustingly it lies,
Encircled by her loving arm,

Oh, is there snght on earth more true
Than gentle woman’s breast.
When infant smiles recall to view
The image there imprest !
She lingers o'er the tender flower
To catch each plesaiiig wile,
And grateful owns ’tis Heaven’s power
Impressed the lovely smile.
Ob, can there aught so faithful guard

The balmy eve, the silent hour,
Recall my absent love;
In vain I list around my bower,
To beer her footsteps move;
For far away her gentle form
Reclines in balmy rest,
Yet in my dreams her precious heed
Reposes on my breast.
Yea, loved one, still that gentle smile
That yields such fond delight,
Hethtoka I see its hallowed wile
Arrayed in dimples bright;
The unerring index of a heart

Whose only joy ia to impart
That smile it yields to one.

The month of March has come in this season

their effect on the frnit crop.
THE CONTENTION-.
Tbe great millennium hasoome at last, and on
Friday the Uadi csls inaugurated their reign of
terror over the white people of the State of
Georgia. This has been long promised and
threatened, and now, with Grant for President
and the whole North at their back, they are go
ing to heap upon onr hapless heads a multiplicity
of woes. That is to my, they are going to re
construct us by the lash and the bayonet. That
Convention was one of those bodies for which
it ia almost impossible to find a parallel, and
which no other number of men could imitate.
Then were, according to the roll, one hundred
and four connties represented by two hundred
and thirty-eight delegates, black and white, but
for this I am not going to vouch, as it would of
course be impossible for me to say how many
“bogus” names were attached to the list.
It was in good truth a goodly mingling of
shades, hut the most important feature in con
nection with it waa the speeches made by O’Neal,
the Representative from Lowndes, and Farrow,
the Attorney General Both these individuals
denounced the present Legislature as an “ille
gal body,” and the “gentleman from Lowndes”
used the very modest expression that it was
“ covered all over with the slims of deceit.”
Just think of this. A man sitting a3 a mem
ber in that Hall every day and acting in harmo
ny-voting and speaking and having his per
diem and mileage with the other members of
the Legislature, and then going abroad and
abasing and foully slandering them after this
manner. Don't yon think the Representatives
