PEELER COTTON SEED.
The Peeler Colton bad ite origin in Miarieeippl, up
on the plantation belonging ton gentleman whose
name it been, lie fonnd it growing among his ordi
nary standing erop.dlstingubhed from all the rest both
by the Ho rn eve and strength of its staple—the abtsn-
danoe of the fruit, its forwardness, the free exposure
of the lint, and other pecaliaritias. Carefully select
ing the seede from these occasional stalks, ha secured
in time, by reproduction, a distinct and valuable va
riety of ootton, which, it it supposed, will supercede
all other short staple varietlas, until astlll bettor can
be developed.
It is claimed for this cotton that it poseaesaa a fine
ness and Isnglh of fibre unrivalled by any other short
staple variety. That in ilrnsli of fibre it excels any
other. That it is two weeks earlier. That it is far
more prolifiothan any other variety—that shale to
- two bales per acre is the common product of It in Mis
sissippi. That by reason of the superior sit# of the
bolls and tha manner in which the ootton protrudes
from them, pissing iaamucb more easy and rapid
operation; ani. <1 Daily, that in value the product is
worth about!ortv per cant, more than ordinary varie
ties.
An examination of this eotton is sufficient to estab
lish some of these points. The fibre ie very fine, silky
and extraordinarily strong. Tha pneeof the cotton in
the market* Is a matter of notoriety, and tha evidence
of ite superior fruitfulness seems to be very dear and
strong.

A Malarious Month—March, that gives us a

harassing disorders. Entangled in its fugs are tho

repellent power is to tone it with H03TETT£R’S

Caught.—We mentioned the fact, a few dara since,
that Bob Wagner and Henry Gilbert, two peni
tentiary convicts who were arrested here some two
weeks ego, made their escape when on the way hack
to their work on the Selma, Rome and Dalton Rail
road, from the guard who had them in charge, near
Kingston, on last Wednesday night week. After
their escape, the villains started immediately back
to this city, and when near Jonesboro, on Saturday
night last, they stole two mules from a Mr. A. F.
Sears, who got upon their tracks and followed them
to Macon, and, with the aid of a few of the police,
found them yesterday morning at daylight abont
three miles from town, in the swamp near the South
western Railroad. When they came upon the ras
cals they had the moles tied up and were feeding
them, and not having time to monnt and make off,
they took to the boshes on foot. The police imme
diately gave pursuit, and Henry Gilbert was over
taken and Captured; bat Bob Wagner succeeded in
getting away. Near where the black rascal
found, was s lot of bacon they had stolen overnight
from Mr. Lloyd's place abont 2% mQes from town.
On retaining from the chase to where they had
first discovered the negroes, the police armed a col
ored man who was engaged in the chase with a pis
tol, and started him on one of the captured mules
to Mr. Loyd’s house after a wagon to haul in the
stolen bacon, and when on tho way to the boose.
Bob Wagner, with ail the impudence and daring of
a devil, sprang out from the bathes, and seizing the
mule by the reins, dragged the rider from its back.
In the Bcufflo the rider fired upon Bob. hot without
effect; when Bob knocked him down and triad to
stranglo him, and thinking he had done so, monntod
the male and rode off. He had not got forty yards
before the negro bounced to his feet and gave the
alarm. Officer Hurley, of tho police force, immedi
ately responded to the alarm and gave Bob chase.
As the mnle could not get along very fast through
the swamp and boshes, or refused to do ao, Harley
gained on Bob rapidly, who, seeing that he woold be
captured or get a ballet under hi* shirt if be stack
to tho mnle, leaped off and made hie eecspe in the
thicket.
The chase was lively and exciting from first to
Isst, and, with the exception of Bob's escape, quite
successful; sa it resulted in the capture of Gilbert,
tho recovery of both mules, and a large lot of bacoc
the rascals had stolen from several parties the night
before.
Bob had better make himself scare* in thia seo-
tion hereafter, as there will not be any particular
care taken to capture him alive. He ought, cer
tainly, to be shot down wherever found, as it ia
dear that be intends to live by theft and robbery
only, and would not haeitate a moment to commit
mnrder^n carrying oat Us villainous schemes.
Corrojr.—The condition of the cotton market is
now, and has been for the last fortnight, exceed
ingly interesting to buyer, and holders, and not a
little ao to outsiders. When gold was 146% in New
Fork, ootton was selling in this market at 06%(S27
cents for middlings, and now when gold is down to
131% in New York, the price of ootton remains un
changed. So that, according to a gold standard, the
price of cotton is higher now than it has been this
season, amfyet there are plenty of holders here
waiting for 27 cents in greenbacks, when we have
shown that they are offered more in gold than they
demand in paper. If greenbacks appreciate in value
as gold declines, which must be ao, then cotton
goes np in price with the appreciating value of
greenbacks, and hence we say, that eotton is worth
more in gold to-day than it has been this season.
Let holders continue to bold, say we ; bat if «lit
tle speck of war between England and this govern
ment shonld spring oat of a settlement of the Ala
bama claims, cotton is going to hurt somebody,
sore aa you’re a foot high.
Akothee Sjcokz-hocse PuntDiam.—The smoke
house of Mr. Tucker, who live* out on the Colom
bo* Road, a mile or two from the city, was entered
by thieves on Tueeday night last and robbed of
a lot of beoon, and his horse stolen to cany it off
on. The thieves, or one of them, offered the bacon
for sale to Mrs. McKcritt, who lire* near where it
was stolen, and after she had bought it, the hone
was turned lose and the thief made off with the pro
ceeds of the sale. A warrant was sued oat against
Mrs. McKoritt, on a charge of purchasing stolen
property, knowing it to be such at the time, and the
was brought before Justice Bametlyesterday and,
after a hearing, was discharged on payment of costa.
The horse and all the meat were recovered except
one middling and a piece of another. The thief or
thieves are still at large

The Exnnsiow or the Taiaajiah.—The Hnw-
kinsvUle Dispatch of yesterday says:
Just before going to prees, a son of Mr. Ike Mitch
ell brought the news to town of the opinion of
the Tallulah, at half past 12 o’clock, on Monday
last, at Lampkin's landing, seven miles below here,
while the bands were at dinner. Cause of explo
sion not stated. The boat sunk in a few minutes
afterwards, and it is thought will be a total lose.
Ono negro was killed and seven wounded. With
[the exception of Mr. Worrell, the superintendent,
no white person was injured. The extent of this
gentleman’s injuries are unknown, hat we trust they
loro not serious.
The Tallulah was partially insured. She was
owned by the Georgia White Oak and Lumber Com;
pany, and was built a few months ago in Macon, at
a cost, including machinery, of 412,000.
The explosion must have been a fearfnl one. as

Weekly Review of the Market
OFFICE DAILY TELEGRAPH, »
March 10—Evr-nso, 1869. j
General Rewarek.—There has been only a mod
erate degree of animation noticeable in the gener
al wholesale and jobbing trade of the city since the
date of cur last weekly review of the market.
In drygoods it has been one of the dullest weeks
of the season, aa tho winter stocks have run very
low and those for the spring trade have jnst began
to arrive.
The money market is wholly without change since
our last weekly report and continues to work verv
emoothly with an ample supply of currency to meff
the demands of all legitimate business.
The stock and bond market is now very quiet and
the transactions of the week in thia class of securi
ties have been of a very restricted character. We
grve revised quotations which express about all. wo

Cotton.—Receipts to-day Cl bales; sales 44;
shipped 112.
Receipts for the week ending thia evening, the
above included, 485 bales; sales for the same time
464; shipped 920—ebowing a falling off in receipts
this week from those of last of 79 bales, and in sales
of 172.
The movement in eotton baa been of a very re
stricted character throughout the past week. Buy
er*’ and sellers' views were generally so far apart
that no heavy operation* transpired on any day, and
at the present writing there is no evidence whatever
of a better understanding. Advices from Liverpool
and New Fork have generally been of a depressing
and circumscribed character, and the. operations in
gold and exchange have steadily favored hojdero of
eotton. Factor*, owing to the steady and rapid fal
ling off in receipts, appear to be wholly indifferent
as to the motives assigned by purchasers for refusing
to operate, however, and while the offering supply
has been equal to the daily demand, most of the
better cotton has been withheld from examination
during the week. In the meantime prices have
ruled with on usual steadiness, and the varaitione in
quotations never exceeded a fraction by way of ad
vance or decline. We quote miAliinge this evening
at 26%c—about the pries they have been at all the
week. Market quiet and but little offering.
