We assure Mr. Jones that wo were already

Hitaxa, March 8.—The government has made
public official dispatches giving the details of the
advance of General Lesea from Laguaaujola to.
Puerto Principe. On tbU march the heaviest
engagement since the beginning of the rebellion
was fought. General Lesea found the enemy to

at upwards of 1000 killed and wounded. The
government accounts claim a victory for Gen.
Lesea, and assort that the insurgents are much
disheartened by their defeat.
But the “government accounts” fail to teU us
that the rebel position was earned, or what po
sitions the armies occupied after the battle—
leaving the impression that the Spaniards were
defeated.
Kisscto His Wife while Dt»o or Hydbo-
fbosxa.—Mr. Eckereon, who died of hydropho
bia at Saddle river, had to be held by five or six
men, snd during hislucid intervals, begged to Iqm
his wife, who was very ill in another part of the
house. Just before his lost dreadful fit he plead
ed so piteously to kiss her onoe more before he
died that, risking the consequences, they took
her to his bed. The dying man carefully wiped
tho froth from his face, and, compressing his
teeth tigbty to prevent any of the poisonous sal
iva exuding from Lis month, kissed the lips
which he had so often pressed in love and affec
tion, and then resolutely turning away, after
0 bidding her adieu forever, relapsed into a dread
ful paroxysm and died. The man who kept the
dog who bit Mr. Kokeruon, after knowing that
it hod been bitten by another mod dog, a week
before Mr. Eokerton's death, gave him fifty dol
lars as compcnsati on for injuries sustained, and
persaadul Mr. Ecker>ou to won a paper of re
lease from further claims. The neighbors are
very indignant, and talk about dubbing together
to carry on a suit against the owner of the dog
on behalf of the widow and orphans.—Trenton
True American.
Ann Johnson's “farewell address” has
stirred up a good deal of bile in tho Republican
party. Probably “Andy” anticipated such a
result. He has learned how to worry and annoy
Jacobins “np to the top of their bent.” He
loaded a message with troth and common sense,
and threw it into their works as a parting trib
ute, and now they are’ convulsed. The United
Statos Senator and ex-Goveroor Rev. Wm. L.
Brownlow’s vocabulary will not express their
rage—Chicago Timet.
