went out ou the portico and ssked Lockhart, in a
friendly manner, (as they had never had any qusrrel
or hard feelings,) what waff the matter, and Luyited
him to get off his horse and come into the house.
Whereupon Lockhart immediately drew his revolver
and fired at him. Mr. Burkett was also armed with
a small pistol at tbe time, and he returned the fire.
Lockhart again fired, and Burkett returned it, and
both parties in this manner exchanged four shots;
hut during which Lockhart rode around behind a
tree. Burkett seeing the advantage which ’b;.
movement gave his nephew, thought of his double-
barreled shot-gun, and ran back in the house to get
it; but the door of the room in which he had his
gun was locked, and while he was endeavoring to
hurst it open, Lockhart gaDopped off down the road..
In an hour afterward, he sent Mr. Burkett a note
apologizing for what he had done, and said that he
was willing to get upon his knees for forgiveness.
Mr. Burkett replied to the note’, stating that be nei
ther desired nor would he receive an apology, and
told Lockhart he should not stay longer in the coun
ty cr. State, and that be must leave instantcr.
Lockhart took Burkett at his word, and has not
been beard of since. The affair is a mystery which
neither Mr. B. or any one else can solve. We give
the facts as we haTe them from a reliable source,
and leave tbe reader to draw his own inferences
therefrom. %
Tax Fruit Ceop.—Several gentlemen with whom
we have recently conversed, upon the subject, state
that in certain localities the fruit has been killed
outright, whilst in others it has been injured but
slightly. About one-balf tbe crop of last season
was killed, which provsd to be a blessing, as at first
there was a superabundant budding, and enough
was left to insure a large yield of well matured fruit.
This was particularly tbe case in regard to peaches.
Hope it may be tbe ease againtbia year.

Senate.—The Senate attempted to reconsider tbe

by three votes.
Most of the day was consumed with bills of a lo

House—In the House but night there was much
excitement in regard to the resolution purchasing
tbe Opera House. The opponents of the measure
determined to stampede rather than support it—a
majority persisting in pressing it to a vote. Amo

Bow Hostetler’s Bitter, Cure Dyspepsia.
TBS WHOI.K STORY IS A *OTSH*LL.
Tbe office of the stomach it to convert the food into
acreim-like semi-fluid, called Chyme. This i* effec
ted partly by the action ofarolvent. called the gastric
juice, which eande* from tho coating ofthertomach.
and partly by a mechanical movement of tbnt organ,
which ehmmt, mm it were, tho dissolving mliment. Tbe
Chthe passes from th, stomach to the duodenum, or
entrance to the bowel*, where it is subjected to tbo
action of tbe bile, sod th, nutrition* portion of it
converted into e fluid ealled Chyle, which eventually
becomes blood.
Now. it is evident that if tbe great solvent, the gas
tric juice. it not produced in sufficient quantity, or if
the mechanical aetlon ortbestomach U not sufficiently
brisk, the Jfrst proeeet of digestion will be bnt imper
fectly performed. It ia also dear that if the liver,
which play, such on important part in changing tbe
nourishing portion of tbo chyme Into tbe material of
the blood, is congested, or in any unnatural condition,
the second process will not be thoroughly accom
plished. Tbe result of th* two failnree is dyspepsia,
complicated with biliousness.
The mode ia which UOSTBTTER’S BITTERS op
erate in such coses as this: They invigorate the cellu
lar membrane of tbe etomsch, which evolve* th* gas
tric julee, thereby insuring an ample sufficiency of
the fluid to completely dissolve th* food. They also
act upon the nerves of the stomach, causing on sccel-
cration of the mechanical movement necetsory to ro
rednee the food to a homogeneous mass. They also
act specifically upon Ute liver, strengthening it. and
so enabling it to produce oa ample and regular sup
ply of bile, for the purpose of converting tbe nutri
tious particles of the chyme and chyle, and promote
tbe passage through the bowels of the useless debris.
In this way. UOSTE ITER’S BITTERS care dys
pepsia and liver complaint. The explanation te
plain, simple, philosophical and true.

Tiiat Murder.—W'b heard little else talked about
a tbe streets yesterday, than the cruel and eavoge
murder, we chronicled yesterday morning. The
whole community is incensed and excited on tho
subject, an it was certainly tho most revolting and
fiend-like murder ever .perpetrated in this State.
The murderess is still at large, and it is now possi
ble that she may make her escape, though our po
licemen ore using every effort to arrest her. We
hope the Governor of tho State, or Ordinary of the
county, win offer a reword for tho arrest of the she-
devil and faring her to justice. Such an enormous,
cold-blooded, demoniac crime must-sot go unpun
ished.
Duel.—'We very rarely here duller days in Macon
at this Besson than yesterday. Trade was almost'
lifeless, and with the exception of the sensation the
rope-walker caused is tbe afternoon we noticed
nothing on the streets worth mentioning. The trains
of the different railroads cams in with bats very
few passengers and the surrounding country was
thinly represented.
The weather during the day was dear, cool and
bracing, and tho dullness of trado and business gen
erally was in no wise attributable to it
Guess it was dull just because it wanted to be no,
■nA such is the case, it’s no use talking.
Paor. Boot, the great wire and rope-walker, bad
-A crowded street and full windows yesterday, to wit
ness his daring, but none the less dangerous and
silly feats, upon a wire suspended across the street
between the Washington building and tbe Odd Fel
lows Hall on Cotton Avenue.
If the Professor, so-called, collected a quarter
per capita on a hall of tho crowd which witnessed
his exhibition, be mode about $300; for there was
fully one thousand persona present, including la
dies, gentlemen, boys and girls—of all ages, condi
tions and colors.
Tkx weather woe spring-like yesterday, with a dash
of North wind run through it.

tween the Amite and Mississippi rivers will pro
duce an aggregate of thousands of hogsheads,
all the result of the enterprise and industry of
the farmers on small tracts of lands. Scattered
around at intervals, at the present time, are
places with twenty, thirty and forty acres of
cane planted. These will yield an average of
from twenty to sixty hogsheads of sugar next
fall, and bring great profit to the cultivators.
The true policy of every farmer, on high lands
or low lands, is to “ get in” some portion of his
land in sugar cane. If not grown to be manu
factured into sugar and molasses, the product
alwavs bears high prices, and the cane is fine
food "for stock. In another year there should
not be one open cultivable place in East Louisi
ana upon which a more or less quantity of cane
ia not growing.”
