General Amenably of Georgia.
REPORTED SPECIALLY FOB THE MACON
DAILY TELEGRAPH.
Atujcta, Wednesday, March 17th.
Senate.—The Senate met as usual.
A motion by Mr. Hinton to reconsider the
bill to open Oconee Hirer up to Parke’s Mill,
A bill for the relief of J. H. Stockton, of the
county of Colombia.
of Clayton and DeKalb.
A bill explanatory of an act providing for the
education of indigent maimed soldiers.
The Senate rescinded its action levying a tax
met as usual.
against any recommendation
aa Halbert, Wallace,
should make. He was _
from the Representative Hall men who have
been sneaking around can raising for this, their
Hurling scheme.
Mr. Crawford thought the gentleman from
Washington, (Mr. Flournoy,) was prejudiced
against all me semes giving State aid to Bail,
roads, or looking towards purchase of the same.
He thought that his constituents would be satis
fied when they aea the practical benefits arising
to the State from the purchase of the Road.
Mr. O'Neal, of Lowndes, said that he sup
ported this resolution because he waa informed
by divers reliable railroad men of Georgia that
the purchase of the Rome railroad and its ex
tension to the State line waa essential to
the protection of the business and inter
ests of the State road which he believed to be
true. It cannot be denied that this road will
be a feeder to the State road. It is our duty
to watch and protect the interests of the people
in this State road. This resolution merely au
thorize* the commissioners to negotiate for this
purchase, subject to the ratification or rejection
of the General Assembly. The character of
Alex. H. Stephens, Campbell Wallace, Mark
Cooper and £ Hulburt is a sufficient assurance
to men that nothing wrong will be done in the
premises. Shall we ait idly by and allow com
peting lines of railroads to sap and destroy the
State Road ? . I say not.
Mr. Phillips, of Echols, offered an amend
ment to the effect that any contract which the
commissioners might make shall not be consid
ered a final purchase unless ratified by the Gen
eral Assembly.
Mr. Price, the introducer of the
lution looking to a purchase of the
c©pt©d amendment, And tho resolution so
amended, was adopted by a vote of—yeas, 63;
nays, 58.
The House here took up the Appropriation
bill, and refused to concur in the Senate amend
ment giving extra pay to the Clerks. The bill
was then returned to the Senate.
In accordance with a resolution passed some
days ago the House adjourned to make way for
the HiberniaBenovolent Association, which
to occupy the hall at 11} o'clock a. m.
House.—The House met at 3 p. jt. and took
up the Senate resolution providing for tho r
chase of Kimball’s Opera House as a Capitol
Mr. Carpenter, of Hancock, moved to lay the
resolution on the table; which motion was lost
The yeas and nays were called several times
and considerable bushwhacking indulged in on
the question by the members opposed to the
purchase withdrawing from their seats to the
door of the hall and thereby leaving the body
without a quorum.
The House adjourned.
It would bo impossible to describe the con
fusion which existed daring the time the ques
tion of the purchase of the Opera House was
before the House, and I must say that if it were
not for the zeal evinced by the opposition the
frand would now be upon the State of Georgia.
The fact is. the House broke up in a row
rather than adjourned.
JtVESIXO session. ’
Senate.—In the Senate, this morning, tho
fifteenth amendment was discussed, Mr. Xun-
nally speaking against and Mr. Smith, of the
7th District, for its passage.
Mr. Bums moved to indefinitely postpone,
which motion prevailed only by the casting
vote of the President, the yeas being 17 and
nays 17.
The following is the voting; Teas—Adkins,
Bowers, Bums, Candler, Colman, Griffin (6th,)
Harris, Higbee, Hnngerford, Jones, McArthur,
McWhorter, Normally, Sherman, Speer, Welch,
Wooten.
Nays—Adams, Brock, Bruton, Collier, Corbitt,
Fain, Graham, Griffin (21st,) Hinton, Jordan,
Lestor, McArther, Moore, Nesbitt, Smith (7th)

A Senatorial Incident.—Some amusement
was created by a scene which occurred in the
Senate on Tuesday, just after the adjournment
of Congress. Mr. Sumner -was engaged in earn
est conversation with a friend, when a young
African, dressed in the height of fashion, ac
companied by two females of the same ‘-race
and color,” gorgeous in feathere and «;iVo ap
proached, and, touching Mr. Stunner on the
shoulder, claimed acquaintance, and immedi
ately presented his female friends to the great
champion of their race. The damsels were de
lighted to see Mr. Sumner, and each took a
hand and settled themselves for a little t»iv
over matters and things. Mr. Sumner did not
seem, however, to appreciate their attention,
and, with the best grace he could command,
withdrew his hands, and, turning his back, re
sumed the converartion which had been inter
rupted. The party were not pleased at their
reception, and one of the ladies remarked:
‘•Well, I didn't think he would be so cool after
all his beautiful talk about us; but white
is very uncertain.”
