Captain Parry, of the bnoy tender Maggie,
which arrived at Charleston on Saturday morn
ing, reports that about ten days ago, while off
St. Simon’s Bay, on the coast of Georgia, he fell
in with a dead monster of the deep n oaring on
the surface. The carcass stood fifteen feet out
of water, and was about thirty feet long by twen
ty wide, with an alligator-shaped head attached
to the body by a neck about fifteen feet in length.
As well as could be judged, the creature was
shaped like a tortoise, and had been dead for
some time, as the atmosphere was tainted with
the smell. Captain Perry sailed within five feet
of the carcass, and would ha re taken it in tow
but a gale was rising and be was anxious to
make an offing. The Captain, who is an old
whaler, says that he has never seen such a sight,
and judges that the unknown creature must have
been of the oldest inhabitants of the briny deep,

It is the testimony of experience teat no sin
gle result of organized labor, however import
ant, is an equivalent for the smaller products of
a diversified industry. Thus, for qgample, we
find it stated in a report of tee Commissioner of
Agriculture that tee cotton crop of Georgia, in
1860, was 701.840 bales—yielding little more
than $30,000,0000; while" tee butter of New
York, in 1865, one of tee several products of the
dairy, was estimated at $60,000,000; and yet
tee census gave to New York but 370,914 farm
ers and farm laborers, and in Georgia, including
white farmers and farm laborers, and only the
males of tee slaves. 316.478 persons engaged in
agriculture. Besides tee other dairy products
and smaller products of tee farm, tee com crop
cf 1864 in New York was estimated at $33,000,-
000 ; the wheat at $25,000,000; the oats at 33,-
000.000; potatoes at 119,000,000; and hav at
$90,000,000. In fine, taking tee whole pro
ducts of that state, including minor cereals,
products of orchards and gardens, production of
beef and mutton from pasturage, etc., the cur
rency value of the agricultural productions of
this one State in that year is stated in tee re
port above referred to, to have been far greater
fh«n the money returns of any cotton crop ever
produced in the country, and the gold value of
such products would be more than equivalent
to tee gold value of half the cotton crop of 1860.
It is true that much of the butter, hay, and
other products of New York are necessarily con-
gamed at home, and but little comparatively is
sent from tee State; yet this statement should
convince our planters that by paying attention
to many more things, easily produced, they will
be enabled to realize far more money and live
better by devoting all their time to cotton.

Probably never before in the whole history of

upon the confidence of mankind, as this excellent
remedy for pulmonary complaints. Through a long
series of years, and among most of the races or
men it haiUKn higher and higher in their estima
tion, ar, it has become better known. Jta uniform
character and power to cure the various affections
of thelnng»aafllhroat»hnYe made it known as a re
liable protector against them. While adapted to
milder forms of disease and to young children, it is
at the same time the most effectual remedy that can
be given for incipient consumption, and the dan-
gerons affections of the throat and lungg. Asa pro
vision against sudden attacks of Croup, it should
be kept on hand in every CamQv r and indeed as all
are sometimes subject to colds and coughs, all
should be provided with this antidote for them.
Although settled Consumption is thought in
curable, still great numbers of cases tvbere the dis
ease seemed settled, have been completely cured,
and the patient restored to sound health by the
Cherry Pectoral. So complete is its mastery
over the disorders of the Lungs and Throat, that
me most obstinate of them yield to it. When noth
