THURSDAY MORNING, MARCH 25, 1869
Bob Waoxeb ia the most popular rascal that has
figured in this section for a long while. We are
asked more than a dozen times a day if he has been
caught. He is still at large; but those living in the
outskirts of town may rest easy for awhile, os it is
known that he is too badly crippled to venture forth
on a stealing expedition for some time to come.
Bob affords those of his race a lesson it would be
well for all of them to leam, and it is, that out-
never yet made anything by stealing, in the long
run. He has done nothing else hut steal, when out
of the penitentiary; but what has he made by it?
What good has his ill-gotten gains been to him?
Have they not rather been a curse? He is hunted
down like a wild beast, and the hand of every hon
est man is raised against him. He is in fear all the
while that the bnllet of some officer of the law or
citizen, wfll pierce his hide or head, and, suffering
in both mind and body, he creeps here and there
through the woods, a starving wretch and outlaw.
Think of it, yon freedmen, who have sense enough
to read and understand what we are writing, and
answer us in your minds, whether or not Bob Wag
ner has made anything by his infamous career.
Broke Gboexd.—For the first time since the
woods were afire, ground was broke last week on
the Houston and Columbus roads. The work is
still progressing, and, in a little while, at least two
of the country roads leading to the city will be in
passable condition, from the corporate limits several
mileB ont. The Commissioners having these two
roads in hand are determined to have them worked
upon, or test the grit of defaulters in violating the
law which imposes road duties upon them. The
Commissioners are empowered to fine all parties
who refuse to do road duty, at the rate of $3 per
diem, for every day they fail to respond when the
call of the Bead Commissioners is madenpon them.
They have now the names of over one hundred de
faulters whom they have notified to appear at the
Commissioners’Court to be held on Saturday, Sd
day of April next, and answer to the charge of de
fault that has been mode against them by tbs over
seers of the work. Should they fail to appear at
the specified time, somebody is going to get hurt—.
“you heard my horn, CaTine."
The Mubdee at Bevxoihs.—We noticed in Tues
day’s paper the killing of one brother by another, at
Reynolds, on the Mnscogee Road, and Btated, in ac
cordance with our information, that the lulling was
accidental, and we most say charitablo feelings in
clined ns to that opinion, as wo could scarcely be
lieve that a man could, in his right mind, deliber-
erately take the life of his own brother. Such,
however, seems to be the fact, as the following
note, from a gentleman living at Reynolds, will
show:
Bets olds, Go., March 23,1869.
Editor! Daily Telegraph : In this morning’s is
sue of your valuable paper, I notice an account of
the murder of Mr. Benjamin Blair, which took
place here on Saturday night. .
Mr. Joseph Blair and Benjamin Blair are broth
ers. On Saturday evening Ur. Ben. Blair got to
drinking and was very noisy, and about nine o'clock
that night, as the two brothers were standing in
front of the poet-office, in conversation, Joe. Blair
drew a pistol and said to his brother Ben.: “G—d
d—n yon, I am going to shoot yon.” and fired. The
witnesses at the inquest swore that the shooting was
done without provocation; and, according to the
testimony, it was a cold-blooded murder.
Yours respectfully,
_ H. H. Loot.
Mr. Long has our thanks for the foregoing note,
and we would be greatly obliged to all of our read
ers at a distance, if they would do as Mr. L. has
done in this instance, when anything of interest or
importance transpire*—drop us a note giving the
particulars. Don't stop to polish or prepare such
letters for publication. Merely state the facts, and
wo will pnt them in readable form.
The Frai Yestehdav Momaxo—After this paper
had gone to press yesterday morning about 1 o’clock,
the alarm of firo was given. It proceeded from the
burning of a small tenement house of Dr.
Thompson, on Bassett's HD, and occupied, we be
lieve, by a Mr, Hightower. It was entirely de
stroyed, on account of its distance from the fire
limits of the dty. All tho engines started ont ex
cept No. 1; but failing to make tho trip, returned
to their quarters. /
Ikate.—On Tuesday evening last the police ar
rested a gentleman in this city by order of a tele
gram from Americas, who had made some sort of
horse trade down there, in which the party who got
tho horse thought he had been “gouged.” In a
whilo after the arrest was made, and after the gen
tleman had been committed to jail, another dis
patch came ordering his immediate release, and re
questing his return to Americas. The gentleman
was a very jolly, sociable man, but the idea of be
ing falsely arrested and imprisoned stirred np what
ever bad blood and grit their was in his composition,
and he left for Americas yesterday morning, with a
big, green, hickory stiek, vowing that he would have
satisfaction for his harsh treatment, or knock that
town all to flinders. Our friends down that way
bad better pacify Me., or they had jnst as well hand
in their checks.
Cabs tor the Macon k Brunswick Rtn.noad.—
The Savannah News, of the 23d Inst., says several
platform earn for the above named road passed
through that city yesterday. Work upon the road
is progrossing very fast, we loam, and its comple
tion by the first of November is certainly ex
pected.
We failed to receive our special telegraphic re
port last night of the New York stock market.
What’s the matter ?
Jcsr Abetted.—Mr. Jno. W. O’Connor received
yesterday a supply of that celebrated X.\ PC whisky,
the best that can bo found in this market. He will
dispose of it on such terms as will mako it to the
interest of dealers to give him a call before pur
chasing.
At.t. those who are punting, or having it done,
will find at L. W. Hunt k Co.’s drug store, on
Cherry st., the very best white paint, perfectly puro
linseed oil, the best varnishes in this market, and
the never fading colors, green, yellow, etc. If yon
wish to buy anything in the line of this bouse, do
not buy before examining their goods and prices.
Special Notice to Coustby Merchants.—We call
particular attention to the card of Messrs. Single-
ton. Hunt & Co., on tho second page. Wo have
often looked through the magnificent line of goods
these merchants keep, and know what they say of
it is all true; they don’t paaise their stock half as
much as it deserves. They havo .some beautiful
Spring hats, and in ladies’ shoes, the finest sped-
mens ever made.
The large house running from street to street, in
Triangular Block, is filled with the articles adver
tised. Wo. commend tho house to the entire Tele
graph family.
Health of the Crrr.—Physicians say the health
f Macon is now most distressingly good. There

Several gentlemen in this dty are
becoming experts in the use of the velocipede, end
we notice them daily running along the side-walks,
under the complete control of those who, but a
month since, could not have rode one ten feet with
out falling off. One who has had some experience
with the bydcle says it may be laid down as an ax
iom that no man can ride a velocipede at the firet
trial. It is an accomplishment that requires con
siderable practice to ensure proficiency. The indi
vidual who first rode one of these crank byrieles
must have had much leisure time on his bands, and
considerable confidence in his ability to maintain
his equilibrium under difficult circumstances. The
mere fact of seeing others riding with such appa
rent ease, induces the spectator to believe that what
others can do, that can he also accomplish, so he
determines to leam.
At the first attempt to more the velocipede by one
who ia astride of it and unaccustomed to its use, it
evinces the most unmistakable inclination to upset,
firBt on one side and then on the other it goes, ne
cessitating a constant effort to keep it up. After a
few moments’ trial, it looks very much like trying
to ride on the back of a knife, or to walk on a tight
rope, and one despairs almost of ever getting the
hang of the ticklish thing. The machine is not
unlike a couple of circular spider webs, set up and
connected by shadowy threads. The noise on the
floor, of the velocipedes rolling smoothly around,
reassures the novice, and he perseveres, notwith
standing some half dozen tumbles, and finally suc
ceeds in making the circuit of the room. After this
it is plain coiling, practice and care ensuring pro
ficiency.
Gilbert's Stab Dramatic Tbocte.—We are glad
to announce that this excellent company will ar
rive in Macon this afternoon, and will open at Rals
ton's Hall this evening, in Bulwer’e celebrated play
of “The Lady of Lyons.” The company, as re
cently organized, is one of the best now in the
South, and is, in every -way, worthy of the most
liberal patronage. It is composed of Southern tal
ent exclusively, and its manager is a warm-hearted,
generous, and most estimable gentleman. In fact,
several members of his own family are members of
the troupe, and they play nothing that will offend
tho most fastidious lady or gentleman. They have

Goon Stock.—Macon md Western Railroad stock
is now worth, in this rnardet, 145, and all off t®

with distinguished ability, and is doing an enormous
business. ^
Match's Court.—Two drunks and one violation
of the license Ordinance were on docket yesterday

■r that the repeal will be defeated.
xAcsment Grant is very much incensed at the
conduct of some Senators, and has determined
-to make no farther appointments shonld the
civil tenure restraint be still kept over him.
Per contra, the Tribune dispatches of same
date, have the following:
There is no question involved which shonld
antagonize the President and the Senate. The
Senate ia in session, and ready and willing to act
upon any nominations that tile President shall
see fit to .make, and is certain to confirm, at
least, ninety-nine in every one hundred, until at
least one is rejected, we perceive no plausible
reason for the repeal or suspension of the ten-
ure-of-offico act.
The Western press dispatches havo the fol
lowing about the Senatorial cancusses upon the
subject:
A Senatorial Republican caucus of two hours
on the Tennre-of-office bill adjourned till even
ing without action. Senators Morton, Grimes
and Sprague withdrew, refusing to bind them
selves to the action of the caucus. It is gener
ally believed now that the bill will be suspended
for four years.
Tho Senate adjourned to 2 o’clock, when the
Republicans, by previous arrangement, resumed
the caucus on the Tonnre-of-offieo act, with a
view to Accommodating the differences.
The President sent in no nominations today.
Many Senators suppose they will be such as to
release the President from tho present embar
rassments. It would seem that the majority of
Senators are opposed to the total repeal of the
law, and desire to retain its principles, but
think some proviso may be added which will
render it generally satisfactory. As the House
has twice passed a bill for its repeal, the differ
ence between the two branches of Congress may
ultimately be adjusted through a committee of
conference.
And later, to this effect:
The Republican Senators were in caucus about
two hours this morning, and about the same
length of time this evening, on the tenure-of-
office act- Mr. Conkling’s proposition to sus
pend the law for four years, or during the ad
ministration of President Giant, was disenssed
with much animation. Several Senators declar
ed that they would not bo bound by the caucus,
and retired from the room. Mr. Edmunds sub
sequently offered a resolution that the act ought
not to be repealed. This also occasioned a li ve-
ly debate. Finally, a resolution was adopted,
that the bill and pending amendments in the
Senate shall bo recommitted to the Judiciary
Committee with a view to a modification of the
law now in force. It is not known what changes
will be proposed.
Health of Sandersrille.
The Central Georgian of yesterday says:
We are truly glad to be able to state that
no new cases 'of Meningitis have appeared
in Sanderaville since the 16th. Most earnestly
do we hope the afflictive hand has been removed
from ns. In reply to the question so often asked,
we say, upon the authority of the medical fra
ternity, the disease is not contagions.

Gexeral FoZXabes.—The movement in the gen
eral wholesale and jobbing trade of the city is r&ther
more encouraging than on the date of our Imet
■weekly report. The presence of planters And farm
era in this market ia daily becoming more percepti
ble ; however, as they are now actively preparing
for the coming crops, we may not expect a very
lively trade from this source for & week or two to
come.
The inflnx of country merchants materially
increased the past week over the week before, and
our wholesale dry goods and grocery houses are
now doing a heavy business. - . * .**
Uninterrupted ease ia still the leading feature of
our money market, And the demands for accommo
dation disclose no appreciable increase. Bates of
interest and discount remain wholly unchanged.
In stocks and bonds transactions have been very
limited the past week, and the demand for * hia class
of securities is very light. We append carefully re
vised quotations, remarking that but three changes
have been made in our list of prices during the
week:

determination to keep their samples covered. On
Wednesdays favorable reaction came under the
more encouraging advice* from tho Liverpool and
New York markets, and prices again began to look
upward, and since Wednesday they have advanced
half a cent on all grades. We quote the market
more active to-day than it has been daring the
