The Trying Beaton.—The searching winds, tbe
cold, drizzling rains, the hosvy fogs, and occasional
warm and moist days of Match, render it. upon the
whole, the most unhealthy month of the year. Its
depressing Influences are-espeelally unfavorable to
invalids. End thousands of persons with feeblo consti
tutions. who havo borne the winter bravely, break
-down intho first month of spring. The variations of
■temperature and cold east winds are a serious trial to
aha dyspeptic and bilious, whoso symptoms they in
variably aggravate. Intermittent fever is also rife
wherever there is evolvable poison in the water^of
the (oil. To enable the system to eombat these evils,
there ie nothing like a good vegetable tonic, and
among thla class of medicines HOSTETTER S STOM-
ACH BITTERS stand supreme. Medical men pro-
seribe it in preference to any of the tonie preparations
of the pharmacopoeia. They are aware that the ordi
nary tinctures and extracts are all based upon cheap
alcohol, which is surcharged with an acrid essential
■oil, and absolntety poisonous. They. know, on the
ether hand, that the rectified essence of the finest rye
grown in this country is the sole spirituous ingredient
of JloSTETTER’S BITTERS, and that the vegetable
medicinal elementsof which it is composed are ofrare
efficacy. Hence it has the confidence of physicians,
and finds its way into hospitals where no other pro
prietary medicine is sanctioned.
A course of the BITTERS is especially recommended
to persons of delicate habit, of both sexes, at Uiis sea
son. In the fever and ague districts of the West and
South, quinine has been almost universally discarded
as a chologogne. and this invaluable antidote to ma
larious disorders adopted in its stead. A double fain
is realised by the change, for the Bitters, unlike that
dangerous alkaloid, are agreeable to the palate, and
their curative effect is much more permanent.

Two Ttcxrra—As will be seen by reference to
onr advertising columns, there are two tickets out
for ten Commissioners to drain the (Sty Reserve,
and locate and build a court-house and jail for Bibb
county.
Now, we have nothing to say in disparagement of
either ticket, nor of any particnlar gentleman whose
name appears on either; bnt we may be allowed to
ask, what is the reason or necessity for running two
tickets? If tbegentlemennamedon either are able,
competent and disinterested, where the interests of
all the people are involved, surely one ticket is all
that BOcnld be voted on Saturday next. But it
seems that the.motives of some parties are either
doubted, or that they will look more to private in
ternet*, in locating.the court-house, than to the gen
eral good and convenience of all the people. Hence,
Judging from present appearances, we are to have
a struggle between gentlemen at the ballot-box, as
to who shall have the power of locating the build
ings and draining the swamp. In other words, we
are to have a contest upon a matter about which
there should really be no diversity of opinion. The
people of the county have a right to demand of gen
tlemen who may be chosen to do th-»,r duty in the
premises, in & fair, impartial imfl unbiased manner,
irrespective of their own or any other individual in-
tercets. It is clearly the duty of the commissioners
to look only to the interests and convenience of the
people of the entire county, in the selection of a
site for the bnUdingB proposed; and having made
the selection, then see to it that such buildings are
erected as will be worthy of our beautiful city, and
that they do not cost a dollar more than is necee-
uy.
If there is a single gentleman named on either of
the tickets alluded to, who feels that he cannot act
in this fair and impartial manner, or any one of
them who has fixed in his mind any paratcular site
for the court-house, and is determined upon that or
nothing, we hope he will instantly resign. It mUm
dnty to the people and himself to do so. We do
not say that there are such men on either ticket,
but if there are, let them resign; for we are sure
that a large majority of the people of the county
will not, knowingly cast their votes for such men.
As to the draining of the Bwsmp, it has the wri
ter’s unqualified approval. Tbe health of nearly the
entire city ie involved, whilst that of the industri
ous, honest and honorable laborers and mechanics
in our railroad and machine shops, is vitally 80.
Every summer they suffer terribly from the poison
ous miasma which arises from the swamp near them,
and they have already made an earnest effort to re
move to Atlanta one of onr largest railroad work
shops. If, as those who are competent to plaoe a
reliable estimate upon tbe work say, it will cost but
$30,000 to drain the swamp, then we most heartily
favor the immediate inauguration of the work. That
amount is as nothing to the incalculable benefits to
be derived. We have yet to see a sound and intel
ligent objection to the work, save the one that it
will coat too much. There never was, nor will there
ever be a community without old fogies and croakers;
but they rarely succeed in doing more than to delay
for a time the onward progress of great and good
events.
Let us have a fine, commodious and centrally lo
cated court-house, and the swamp drained, Mr.
Commissioners on both tickets, or we hope all of
yon will be defeated.

Convict Cauoht.—On Saturday night last, officer
Pridgen, of the City Police, was braising about down
near the Bwamp, below the Macon and Brunswick
Machine shops, merely to see that things were all
going on right, when it occurred to him that be
would drop into tbe bouse where the wife of one
Lucius Johnson, a penitentiary convict, lived, know
ing that be had lately escaped from his work on tbe
railroad. There was some delay about admitting
him on the part of Sin. Johnson, and Pridgen sus
pected tho presence of her husband. He was asked
to enter, however, in a little while, and he found no
one but the woman, until it occurred to him that
there was a very high pile of clothes, quilts, etc., in
an old clothes box in the comer. He asked the wo
man if her husband had been about lately, and she
denied it promptly and almost indignantly. Pridgen
asked her what was in that box in the corner.- She
replied, nothing bnt her clothes. “Let’s see, said
p.and he began to take off tbe things. After re
moving several articles, he came to a very large pair
of brogan shoe-toes sticking up, and strange to say,
they had fresh dirt on them and felt warm. An
other quilt was removed, and there lay Lucius, fair
ly steaming with perspiration and nearly out of
breath from the effects of the warm quarters he was
occupying. He had to come ont of that, and
Pridgen brought him to town and jugged him until
yesterday morning, when he and Henry Bostick
were returned to their labor on the railroad.
• EArtec Pio-Nic.—The children of the Episcopal
Churches In this city, composing the Sunday Schools
of Christ Church, St. Paul's and St. Barnabas Chap
els, had a delightful pio-nic yesterday afternoon in
the grove near tbe Cometeiy.
At ibi r. x. the procession, with silken banners
with various scriptural devices, formed in front of
Christ Church, and took up the line of march for
the pio-nic grounds, all beautifully dressed and rosy
with the excitement of the occasion. Arriving
there they dispersed themselves in groups about
the grounds, or indulging in each sports as “third
man,’’ “many, many stars,” which last game we fa
vorably inclined to as there is considerable kissing
in it. There seemed to be. also, a good deal of hap
piness among some couples of a maturcr age, who
appeared suddenly seized with a taste for botaniz
ing, and who, in the earnestness of their occupation,
(inadvertently of course) strayed off some distance
from the crowd.
At a preconcerted signal the schools were then
called together, and marched over to the tables
which had been invitingly spread for them by tho
ladies of the churches, and while they were all in
terested in the feast, the Efcter eggs were scattered
about through the woods, hid under the leaves and
straw.
After dinner began the bunt, and a very earnest
one it was—all the children taking great interest in
it until all tho oval treasure.* were found. Then
they began to start for home in groups, and the
place was soon as quiet as it was before their com-
“xho evening was quite propitious, and X am sure
that not only the children, bnt our pastor and all
who attended had a delightful time.

Virginia.—The claims of this company upon those
who desire to insure in a safe, reliable and prompt
paying company are as great, if not greater than
any we know of. Losses are promptly adjusted, as
will be seen by a certificate from Mr. G. W. B arwick,
of Smithville, and given below. The character of
its risks are unexceptionable; no extra rates are
charged on lives of females; no notes are required

Maion's Cotrstr.—Tbk coart wks a big thing yes-
terday morning, and from the way His Honor “went
for" delinqents, we infer that he was fully equal to the
emergency. Thiugs stood about thus at the close
of tbe docket;
Perry Watts and Tom Thompson, the sharpers
who fleeced Jasper McNair, a colored greenhorn
from the country, an account of which we gave
in Saturday's paper, were brought up standing, and
for the offence were put to work on the streets for
thirty days each. This is a severe punishment for
two such lazy fellows and it will nearly kill them.
Rate Dennis and Laura Sykes, colored women and
had characters, were up for fighting. Kate was fined
£20, or ten days on the streets; and Laura $25; or
twenty days on the streets. Unit will interest them
for awhile, at least.
Jake Flowers had been doing a little plain, fair
and square stealing, and will work thirty days on
the streets for the privilege. From the character
of Jake we judge that labor for thirty days will hurt
him badly.
Henry and Anna Persons had been efi&sged in a
big fight on Sunday. Henry was fined $20 or twenty
days on the streets, and Anna $10 or ten days, bnt
on account of some mittigating circumstances the
fine and punishment were afterwards remitted by the
Mayor.
One common drank cost a man $5, which he paid
and departed.
Wm. Price (negro) was remanded for a warrant,
for a little stealing he had been doing, and here the
book dosed, and the crowd retired.
