About Water-Spouts at Sea.
An article in Harper's Magazine says:
The first indication of the fermstian of s
water-spont observed by the seamen on board
their ship consists of the gradual concentration
and settling down of a inass of dark and heavy
elonds over the sea. accompanied by great agi
tation of the water immediately icneath it. The
mass of water soon begins to show a tendency
to rise in a tumultuous heap toward the cloud,
which in ita tnra evinces a tendency to descend
to meet it. Both the rising wave and the de
scending cloud move together over the sea,
whirling, as they go, in a sort of waltz as fan
tastic as it is fearfrAandanblime. At lengththe

considerable degree analogous to those witness
ed in thin phenomenon— sufficiently so to in
crease the probability that the agency of elec- i
tricity is in some way involved, though it is not
known in precisely what manner or to what ex

Not the least singular of the tilings to be ob
served in respect to waterspouts is the mode
adopted by seamen for breaking and dispersing
them, which is by shooting them, as it were, by
guns or cannon. If the seamen find that the
whirling column is drifting away from them, or
moving in such a direction as not to cross the
track of the ship, they leave it tLsmiUy to finish
ita dance as it pleases. But if they find it com
ing toward them, they train all the guns upon it
that they can muster, under the idea that either
the impact of tho shot or the concussion of tho
sound will break the charm and make it burst
and disappear like a touched bnbble.

Day or tlic Crucifixion. ..
Speaking of tho last Good Friday tho Now
Orleans Picaynno observes:
It derives, if possible, an additonal solemnity
this year from the fact that it is not only tho
commemorative day fixed by tho rubrics of the
churches, bnt by tho computations of chronolo
gies is the actual aniversary. -The festival of
Easter and the fast of Good Friday are what
are called moveable dayB, determined by their
approximation to the vernal equinox ana vary,
from time to time, with the age of tho vernal
full moon. This year Good Friday falls on the
2Gth day of March, and Easter Sunday on the
28th day of March; and the latest and now ac
cepted calculation of archasologisis and as--
tronomers is, that tho crucifixion took place
at Jerusalem on Friday the twenty-sixth day of
March, and the rising from the dead on the
28th day of March, in the year 28 of the common
era, corresponding to the year, 4741-trf the Ju
lian period. It is, therefore, not merely a sym
bolical or commemorative celebration, in which
Christians take auch profound interest to-day,
but an actual anniversary.
The same authorities pises the birth of the
Saviour in the 4707th year of the Julian period.
The current year is the G562d of that period,
and as tho reckoning is of years current, and
not of years elapsed, we are in the 1876th year
from the birth of Christ, instead of the 1869th
year, as is commonly written.

Tax Islaxd oy Fxbxasbo Pa—The Spaniard
is a cruel, vindictive and bigoted creature. The
political prisoners cfuGaba ore being sent to
this miserable Island—the prisoners of war in
all cases are shot At a late Caban meeting in
New York Hr. Panl B. Da Chaffin made a speech
in which he gave the following description of
this Island: a . •
Wo hare heard tho cry from Cuba of widows
and orphans. War ana revolution is raging in
Cnba, and poor people are suffering from the
barbarities inflicted upon them by these tyrants.
He was in the country to which the Spanish au
thorities aro exiling the revolutionists, and his
flesh shuddered when ho read that these men
were sent to Fernando Fa He could stand a
great deal of American climate, bnt that of Fer-
'nando Fo on the west ooast of Africa is the
most insufferable. It rains there all the time,
and is extremely hot, and, from the decayed
vegetation that sends forth poisonous exhala
tions, it is tho most unhealthy spot in the world.
The English first had it, bnt the Spaniards
abont ten years ago claimed it, and the English
conceded it to them because of its nnbealthi-
ness. It is to be hoped that the re volntion will
sncoeed.so that tho poor Cabans will be prompt
ly retened from their exile. He protested
against the outrage of sending political prison
ers to Fernando Pa It is an outrage against
which every man onght to protest, especially
every citizen of this great repnplic—for, after
all, Cuba is part of oar country. She is st oar
own doors. Cabans aro Americans bom on
this continent. He sincerely hoped, therefore,
that all were united and actuated with the same
feeling of sympathy for Cuba, and oil actuated
with the same desire to give her material and
physical aid. (Cheers.) He wonld, therefore,
call for three cheers for tho freedom and inde
pendence of Cnba."

Too Much Mar.nrm.—The Montpelier (VL)
Journal copies the following from a private let-
tor, dated not a thousand miles from White
River Junction:
‘‘They have got np the funniest snarl across
the river that yon ever heard of. At a party
last week, at ’a, after exhausting the or
dinary games, nud wanting something new,
mock marriages wore proposed. Accordingly,
names were drawn by lots, and four couples
stood up to be married. The ceremony was
performed and they were pronounced ’“nun
wife by the lasrs of the State and before these
witnesses.” Afterward they learned the man offi
ciating was a Justice of the Peace, and tho par
ties were legally married! They are in tho
greatest alarm abont it that ever was. One ot
them. Professor—, of T—Seminary, expects
a lady np from below in about a fortnight to
marry him, and nearly every one involved is ex
pecting to be married right away—one other
gentleman to a lady below—and they feel like
death. They have searched all the law books,
and consulted authorities far and near, and ev
erything only proves the knot still tighter. The
Justice has been fined fifty dollars for each
conple. He says he is from another county,
and cannot do business here, and supposed tho
marriages not to be legal. It is certainly a
funny scrape, and made still funnier by’the
fact that all parties belong to the ‘‘upper ten”
The best opinion Is that they are legally mar
ried, and can only be divorced by- the Legisla
ture.”

Monticelix), the former residence of Thomas
Jefferson, in Albemarle county, Virginia, is to
be sold at auction on the 13th day of May next.
The sale is by virtue of a decree of the Circuit
Court of Richmond. The Charlottesville Chron
icle very appropriately says that it onght to b«l
long to the State of Virginia; but as th»t, un
der the present circumstances, is impossible, we
hope that some one will bay it who will Ere
there at least s part of the year, and keep the
house and gronnds in creditable order.
Ms. Hi.im.Tov Fish lives in Robinson’s house
opposite West Point, where Arnold heard of An
dre’s capture, and. leaving Washington at tbe
dinner table, kissed Mrs. Arnold and his child,
and ran down to the river to embark on board
the British gunboat Vulture. He is a man of
riches and a magnificent host, and will make
Seward's era of good feeding like the remem
brance of a barbarian’s cuisine.— WoMngUm
