The Chronicle and Sentinel giro* a list of
twelve cotton mills in that region which draw
their supplies from that cotton market, which
aggregate over 70,000 spindles and over 1,600
looms, demanding a miniwnm average for daily
supply, of more than ninety bales of raw cotton.
All of these mills are prosperous and prosper
ing. The Augusts Factory pays its stockholders
regular quarterly dividends of five per cent or
twenty percent, per annum.- The established
dividend of the GraniteviOe Factory is 8 per
cent; all profits over and above this sum is held
as a reserve fund and set apart as a banking
capital; a policy made necessary by the existing
limited National Bank capital, which has been
wisely and profitably pursued. We derive this
evidence of the prosperity of these mills from
their regular reports, lie remainder of the
mills being close corporations, yield no statisti
cal information as to their prosperity.
Tlie Eloquence of tlie Show Shop.
Gentlemen : This is the celebrated boar con
strictor ; the finest, largest, Ibngcst, strongest
and prettiest animal of its species on exhibition
in this country. He wss caught in South Africa
(as he lay torbid after swallowing two oxen and
a drove of sheep) in a wire net, his capture
affording a beautiful illustration of successful
It was supposed that the sand where he was
found was hot enough to boil eggs, and that his
skin was at least “well done" is proved by his
highly finished appearance. His ookrr is sup
posed to combino all the hnea of all the snakes
that hissed or bit from the “old serpent" to the
congor cel His size is variable, as, like most
other objects in nature, he expands with heat
and contracts with cold. For every rise of five
degrees in the thermometer, he gets a foot of
longitude. In his native sands he is a handled
and fifty feet long. The warm season of our
country stretches him twenty-five feet. 1
January, when the thermometer fell to sixteen
degrees, he shrank into such trifling dimensions
as to be invisible through a microscope. His
present length yon can aee for yourselves. His
temperance principles are of the Goughist kind.
He is a dozen cold water societies rolled into
ope. His drink at his present dimensions is
three gallons of water per week, his food three
more gallons. He has great natural talent for
politics, which he shows by changing his coat
three times a year. Pries of admission twenty-
five cents.
Yocwo Mss, Bx^abx.—Van Wyck, the fa-
moos New York surgeon, warns the public
against the ttae of the velocipede. He says the
severe jar of the small hard seat produces dis
ease of the prostrate gland, and if young men
wish to preserve their manhood they should
cease the use of the velocipede.
Secretary Bontwell has caused a flutter among
his femalo employes by requiring them to give
their names, residence, by whose influence they
were appointed, and whether they have a father,
mothor, sister or brother also employed in the
Department, the Secretary having determined
that no two of one family shall be kept in office.
Gold Fish.—-Gold fish, three or four of which
wore introduced into the Potomac from the foun
tain in tho Capitol grounds at Washington, a
few years since, are rapidly populating the whole
river, and many are sent hero as offal fish in the
vessel loads of shad and herring.—Alexandria
