WX RATION AT MI'-H. OEAVx's MCEPTIOJ!—TH* CASE
or JIB. CASSAXOVA.
Mrs. Emilia C. De "Villaverde and Miss Man-
tula Yzquierdo, of the Cuban Ladies’ Belief As
sociation, were at the Capitol on Tuesday, in
company with General Banks, who showed them
around the -House and Senate and introduced
them to a good many distinguished members of
Congress. Later in the day they called on Gen
eral Hherman and General Rawlins, Secretary
of War, in company with Mr. Leopold Yzqui
erdo. At two o’clock they visited Mrs. Grant,
who was holding her first reception at the White
House. The Caban ladies wero conspicuous in
the brilliant throng that filled the bine and red
rooms. Miss Yzquierdo was dressed in etrir col
ored silk trimmed with white lace, and wore con
spicuously on her breast, suspended by a piece
of ribbon, a miniature model of the Cuban flag,
consisting of red, white and bine bars, with a
red triangular field, in the centre of which was
a white star. -Miss Yzquierdo mado friends very
fast among the ladies assembled in the cast
room. She is a young and beautiful Cuban, with
a wonderful wealth of jet black tresses, “all her
own,” and eyes of very brilliant lustre. Mrs.
Villaverde was dressed in blue silk, and wore
the national colors of Cnba, as already described.
Mrs. Grant was very cordial to her Caban vis-
itors. .She requested Major W. W. Leland to
take them around the mansion and conservatory
and show them everything of interest in th'
place, which mission the Major performed very
gallantly. On returning, Mrs. Villaverde inti
mated to Mm. Grant that she desired to see the
President in regard to her father, Mr. Cassano-
va, now imprisoned by the Spanish authorities
in Cuba. Mrs. < irant veryMndlyVwUup to»fa»
and desired General Dent to eoodnet the ladies
to the library and then inform President Grant
iL it an :nt -rview with Ilia VMreqoMtedla re
ference to the case of Mr. Cassanova. The Presi
dent mode his appearance promptly, and en
tered freely into conversation with tho ladies.
He assured Mrs. Villaverde that he had given
his personal attention to her father’s case, and no
later than that morning be had an interview w ith
the Secretary of State in reference to it. Sira.
Villaverde was so wiieww bythe degree of in
terest manifested by tho President that she
burst into tears, which sensibly affected his Ex
cellency, who again assured her that the United
Btates Government wonld do all in its power to
protect its citizens everywhere. The interview
then terminated.— Wanh. Cor. H. T. Herald.

this city of Thoa. Washington, a sprightly look
ing oolored youth, who is said to be a waiter in
a natal in Naw York city, and she oontiwmd to
correspond with him, notwithstanding the re
monstrances of her father. Washington, who
was recently on a visit here, left this city in the
early part of last week, and it is stated that Miss
Torrey received a letter from him subsequently.
Anyhow, on Friday last she went to tho Capi
tol and saw her father, who was -m duty as po
liceman, after which she did not return to her
homo. This gave him no uneasiness, as she
often passed tho night at a neighbor’s house;
bat as aba did not oosne home on Saturday moro-

tained that a girl answering her description had
left the city in one of tho trains on Friday after
noon, and the family discovered that a small
snm of money (abont $10) had been taken from
tho honso. Mr. Torrey, on learning these facts,
informed the polico authorities, and Major Rich-

believe the files and records of the Court will
show, that the only information given by Mr.

he filed in the office of the District Attorney in
January, 1867, nearly two years after the prop

nearly two years before this information, which
was a mere copy of a public record that was

of tho facts in this case, and we mako them for
the purpose of showing upon what a slight foun

It is thought that the recent frosts have caus
ed bnt little damage to the fruit crop. Vegeta
bles that were up have been cut down, and we
have heard of some localities where forward
com has been “ nipped in the bud.”
The wheat crop in this vicinity looks flourish
ing, and if no disaster befalls it, wo may confi
dently expect an abundant harvest.
We are pleased to learn that no new cases of
memngittis have occurred in onr sister city,
Madison, and the excitement on acoonnt of its
prevalence has passed away. We learn there
were thirteen deaths in all, caused from that
epidemic—eleven blacks and two whites.
We learn that some little disturbance has been
created among the freedmen in the neighbor
hood of Brick Store, in this county, and that
some of them have ran off from their employ
ers, leaving them minus of sufficient laborers to
carry on their farms. ^ .
