Rcsawat.—A saddle horse became frightened on
Mulberry street yesterday by having the saddle to
torn on and under him. Ho dashed down the pave
ment on the southsido of tho street at a most fnri-
ous and reckless pace, to tho great danger and dis
may of pedestrians who were on the street at the
time. He was headed off and stopped near the old
Conrt-house.
The horse attached to Mr. Holdridge'e carriage
came very near naming away on the same street
awhile afterwards, on account of one of the lines
bresking. The driver had tho presence of mind,
however, to poll steadily and stoutly on the other
line, and the horse was rounded to before getting
under headway.

that a cairn not unfrequently precedes a storm,
and we hope’that such is the case in affairs of the
dty. There was nothing whatever that we could
find or hear of yesterday that could be tortured in
to anything like an interesting local item. It was
intolerably dull In other words it was the calm
that precedes the storm of interest and exdtement
we shall have to-morrow, in witnessing a fine velod-

fire engines in tho evening. All that wo might have
had something to say about, has been taken in hand
by correspondents, and we give them editorial

Macon, April 11,1869.
Editors Telegraph: You will confer a favor on a
portion of the tax-payers of Macon by calling the
attention of the authorities to tho dilapidated con
dition of the streets up this way. Where the sewer
crosses Elbert street, between the Southwestern
and Brunswick Depots, it has caved in bo badly that
it is impossible to pass there, and all tho way from
there to the Brunswick Depot there are gullies
washed across the street, so that it is dangerous to
travel the street in any kind of vehicle. We never
fail to pay our taxes when called upon, and we think
it would bo right for them to give us
tention. They haven t been out this way for over
two years, to our certain knowledge.

Items from the Monroe Advertiser.
We are informed by Mr. Lake, tho efficient
Railroad Agent, that 4268 bales of cotton have
been shipped from this point daring the present
season. About 150 bales are now stored in the
warehouse. Before the season is over at least
5000 bales will have been sent forward to mar-
ket—putting into toe pockets of our planters
nearly $500,000.
The probability is that the mop will be in
creased this year, though whether too receipts
of the crop now being seeded in this and too
counties tributary to this market, will amount
to more than $500,000 next season is a matter
of serious doubt.
Judge Alex. M. Speer, who lately removed

We hare to chronicle another jail delivery.
On last Sunday evening, while the guard, Mr.
Callaway, was at supper, toe two negroes, Pat
terson and Henry Trapp, assisted by their
friends on the outside, made goodTheir escape.
No part of the blame, we feel assured, will fall
upon Mr. Callaway. The fault seems to lie in
in the total unfitness of the jail building to the
use for which it is designed. Wo hope to see
some move made to render it secure, if, indeed,
that is possible.
We learn that there is to be a May Festival at
High Falls, in this county. Indian Spring,
Bamesvillo, Griffin, and, we presume, also For
syth, will be represented on toe occasion. We
know of no more appropriate spot for such a
celebration than too point indicated. The mag
nificent scenery of High Falls has become his
torical, and is well worth a visit. A gay time is
anticipated.
The celebration at High Falls will not inter
fere with the one at Forsyth, and we renew our
invitation to toe young ladies and gentlemen of
Macon to join us. We hope also to see repre
sentatives of the Macon and Atlanta press on
hand. We have engaged front seats for t^em.
A vert destructive fire broke out on the plan
tation of Mr. John Goodman, last Friday. From
Mr. Goodman's plantation, is spread into Judge
Bankston's—from thence to Mr. Goggans’—and
its progress was finally arrested on Mr. Moses
Dumas 9 place. The injury done is reported to
be very serious—more than a thousand panels
of fencing having been consumed upon Judge
Bankston s plantation alone.
The fanning Interests of Washington county
are represented to be in a very promising condi
tion. A heavy cotton crop is being put in toe
ground, but with average seasons, enough com
will be raised for home consumption.

Only as a warning to both races, we give pub-

We withhold names, time and place, for the
reasons that we do not desire to parade toe un

a young lady at a spring, seized her, choked
her till she was unconscious, and gratified ins

him and cried for help—none came. The ne
gro tore loose, but left a portion of shirt m toe
land of toe one arm soldier. This detected
him a few hours afterwards, when he was taken
to a tree hard by, and placed at the lower end
of a suspended rope.

prove and endorse the action of the jury that
tried and executed this fiend; and that we are,
heart and soul, in favor of its repetition wher-
