CITY AFFAIRS
WEDNESDAY MORNING, APRIL 23, I860.
Cottox.—With tho exception of a few interested
parties, last year’s cotton crop has ceased to attract
much attention. Tliero aro now abont 5400 bales
in the fonr warehouses of tho city and in East Ma
con, and it is generally held in lots of from one to
three hundred hales, by parties who seem determin
ed to hold it to tho last possible moment, before
they will part with it under 27 or 28 cents per pound.
Whether they will bo able to get this price, either
hero or elsewhere, before this season falls under tho
shadow of tho next, is a question wo do not bclievo
any man can clearly and truthfully settle. We
know, however, from statistics mado up to date,
that tho American crop of '63 will hardly vary 100,-
000 bales from tho crop of 'G7. It may fall short
about that amount, and when this question is clearly
settled, wo believe that present prices will not ad
vance a fraction, but on tho contrary may drop off a
cent or two. Of course, this view is taken in tho light
that this and the European governments maintain
their present amicable and peaceful relations. If,
however, thoy are disturbed or broken up on ac
count of tbe Alabama claims, or a disposition on
the part of this country to seize Cuba, then, away
goes tho present price of cotton, and, perhaps, tbe
pricoof tho next crop.
OotxruonPE Fire Co., No. 1.—Wo learn that this
fine company of tho Savannah Fire Department,
propose visiting Macon abont tho 15th of May. They
come merely as visitors in pursuit of pleasure and
recreation, and will be tho guests of Protection No.
1, daring their stay. We hope something in tho
way of a ball may be gotten np on tho occasion, so
that tho ladies of tho city may partiepate in tho
pleasure wo shall all derivo from meeting the gal
lantry and chivaliy of the "Forest City.”
Wo have heard several ladies “fussing” a little
abont being excluded from the refreshments and
amusements which the firemen had all to themselves
daring the lato festivities, and we thought they wero
about right. We wouldn't give a snap of the fingers
for all the loxries of life unattended by the smiles
and beauty of tho gentler sex. But, then, there aro
times when wo would rather dispose of their pres
ence ; and it is when some rough, drunken charac
ters tako advantage of their connection with their
organizations, to expose themselves and miabebavo
in tho presence of ladies. On such occasions a gen
tleman feels like inviting tho ladies to retire, until
such characters can ho pitched head foremost out
of tho doors and windows.
At this season, when coughs and colds
arc to prevalent, an effectual remedy, and one easily
obtained, is Perry Doris’ Veoeialle "Pain Killer.
It is no sew nostrum, vended by unknown agents.but
has stood the test of over twenty years and those who
nse the article, internally or externally, will connect
with it grateful recollections of its worthy inventor,

and also, that in the event any one of the party
comes home missing, wo may know, by referring to

of him. - ,
A note was received yesterday from the Secretary
and Spokesman or tho squad, stating that they had
taken one hnndred and thirteen fish on Wednesday,
and among the number were some very fine speci
mens of the finny tribe. The note dosed withan
urgent appeal for more bait and beef-steak. Why
it called for nothing else, is attributable to the fact
that they took along an ample supply for ten men
ten days.

London, April 22.—Comments of the city journals
on Cuba:
The Telegraph says that England is unbiased, bnt
English interests will be boat served by Spain re
taining authority over Cuba. It would not be Eng

averting a quarrel between the United States and
Spain. The seizure of the Mary Lowell is designated
as a mad act implicating England and Spain's best
