CITY AFFAIRS.
THURSDAY MORNING, APRIL 29, 18C9.
ilzvnmtr. Abeocxatips.—The ladies of the Uemo-
Hal Association are requested to meet' in the Pres
byterian Lecture Room this (Friday) afternoon, at 4
o’etook, for tho annnal election of officers.
By order of Mbs. Habdewajt,
President M. E.
The State Faib.—Wo understand that a commit
tee has been appointed who will soon enter upon
the duty of raising foods by private subscription,
for the purpose of holding the Bute Fair in this city
next November. It is high time the work wse en
tered npon in earnest, to ensure success. There is
a vast amount of labor to bo performed by tho
Committee of Arrangements. The grounds and
buildings are all to bo properly prepared, and it will
take timo and a considerable sum of money to do
it; but we have not a donbt that our merchants and
business men. and citizens generally, will liberally
respond to all tho demands that may be made npon
them.
The Fair should be nude on era in the history and
progress of tho city, and if the arrangements for
holding it are made on that grand and extensive
scale which its importance demands, it will be so.
Wo expect to see in Macon during the Fair week at
least twenty-five thousand strangers and visitors,
and they will pour into the lap of the city’s trade
nearly or quite a half million of dollars, perhaps
doable that amount.
No effort, therefore, to make the occasion attract
ive and the Fair a brilliant suocoess, should be
spared by those upon whom the arduous duties of
engineering affairs will devolve. And none the leea
is it thp duty of every citizen of Macon to aid all in
his power tho city officials and committee of ar
rangements. '

Rtcrxa. Two races came off yesterday at tho
race track between certain horses in this city, and
entered by parties whose names we are not author
ized to mentioned. The first was a dash of a half-
mile for $50, and was won by a small sorrel mare
in 1:02. Hie other was a dash of only a quarter for
825.
The track was in heavy and had condition, as the
nces took place in the afternoon just after the
rsin. But, really, the track is never in condition far
Tȣing, as stock is allowed to run over it and in sev
eral places bogs have made their wallows npon it,
rendering it not only unfit for use, but quite dan

Gotxs io Tbobblk—A pair of countrymen who
visited the city yesterday to do a little trading, got
tipsy before leaving town, and got into a difficulty
with a merchant on Cotton Avenue, who, after suf
fering much cursing and abuse from them, reported
them to a police officer, who attempted to arrest
them and was resisted. He called in assistance and
forced the gents to sneenmb, and lodged them in
the guard house. There is nothing easier for a i
to do than get himself into trouble in this town.

gant dinner at this house yesterday, and after doing
so tried a genuine Habana cigar, from a lot the Col

constantly on hand. No fastidious “lover of the

The trade of the city has not been very active the
past week. In fact, it bias been rather dull during
the whole month now drawing to a dose. The bulk OateVlT'ilrAn 1
of trade has been confined to the dry goods line, and Pork
there is, daily, considerable activity about the lead
ing dry goods jobbing houses.
There has been some improvement the past week
in the stock and bond market; but it is still rather
dull, and we hear of no very heavj'operations in
either. We give revised quotations:

No Mohe Chills and Feveb.—Attention is called

BELL-nASomo—The largo new bell of tho First
Baptist Church, on Second street, was hung in the
belfry yesterday morning. Quito a crowd assembled
to witness the operation of elevating the heavy
customer to its lofty position in tho steeple. Tho
bell is an excelled one and gives a very deep, lond
and mellow tone that falls gratefully and pleasantly
npon the ear.
We took a peep at the interior of the church yes
terday, and most say that those who have had the
various repairs made, in hand, have most elegantly
and handsomely-accomplished their work. A pret
tier church, we think, conld not be found in the
State.
Tax-tatebs and purchasers of city lots aro inter
ested in certain notices given them in this issue of
the Teleouaeb, by tho Clerk and Treasurer of tho
dty. It will be well to attend to the matters referred
to immediately. There is no nse or philosophy in
putting off a thing that can be done to-day aa well aa
at any time, and has got to be done, finally.
Yeoetablxs.—An abundance of vegetables can
now bo had at the City Market every morning. As
yet, they demand pretty high prices. We noticed a
bushel or two of Tory nice Irish potatoes, fresh from
the ground, in market yesterday, for which the re
freshing figures of 50 cents a quart were demanded.
We don't think many, if any at all, sold at that price.
We hope not, as it is ont of the question. Sixteen
dollars a bushel for potatoes—whew! we’ll none of
’em.
Matok's Cocht.—Two cases of stealing were dis
posed of in this Court yesterday morning. The first
was a case that had been continued the morning he
fore, against a negro named Ham. Price. He was
ordered to assist the present force on tho streets for
thirty days, in laying the handsome gravel walks
which seem to be so popular just now with the
Street Commissioner.
The other case was against a pair of rogues—J.
Slater and Henry Bone—who had been running a
littlo "copartnership in the thieving line. They were
fined 810 each, or ooold go to jail for fifteen days in
lieu-ef that amount
T.inm Tchtles.—We saw several very largo, fine
sea-turtles on the streets yesterday, weighing from
75 to 125 pounds each.
Talking about turtles, it reminds us that the By-
ington Boys do np a fine, green seventy-five pound
er to-day at 11 o'clock, in the shape of soup, and of
which everybody are invited to call and partake.
A oentudian inquires of us by letter, “What has
become of the Georgia White Oak Lumber Compa
ny?" We understand from the President of the
Company, that with the explosion of tho boiler on
the Tallulah and the sinking of tho boat, the enter
prise exploded and went down with it—at least
for the present.
Southern Cultivatob.—This excellent agricultu
ral monthly for Hay is now on our table. It can be
bad of Havens & Brown.
Mb. S. D. Evkbett baa opened a new Drug Store

Mobile, April 27—The Illinois Press Association
numbering some 120 gentlemen and about the same
number of ladies, leave MobUe by a special train for
Montgomery, to-morrow morning. They go to ac
cept the hospitalities of that city, tendered two days
nee.
Their visit here lasted three days, and has done a
vast deal to promote good feeling between the sec
tions. They have received great and oontindoua
hospitality from the City Government, the Doard of
Trade, and citizens, representing all shades of politi
cal opinion—from ultra Radical to extreme Copper
head—they, one and all expressed themselves per
fectly delighted with what they have seen for them
selves in their progress South.
Xbey are surprised at the fertility of the soil—at
the openings for industrial manufacturing, as well
as for commercial and agricultural enterprises.
In all their speeches, and in all their private ex
pressions of opinion, one and all have declared tha.
new light has dawned on them.
They would not . have believed what they have
seen for themselves.
Radical editors are surprised at the peaceful con
dition of the country and its political quiet.
The Daily Rogister has opened its columns to all
parties, and is filled with these expressions from,
some of tho most uncompromising Republicans.
Today the Board of Trade gave a steam boat ex
cursion down the Harbor—through the shipbing and
at the collation on board, there was a further re
newal of good feeling and general desire to be at
peace Both parties declare they see great results
to spring from this' excursion, and hope for more
