the pmpose of putting the Armory buildings and
ground* in proper order for holding the Fair.
After considerable interchange of views in regard
to details, the meeting adjourned.
It now only remains for the dtizena of Macon to
respond promptly and liberally to the call which the
Committee wfllmake npon them forneceesary funds
to make the Fair a brilliant Bnccess. Fifteen thou
sand dollars will, we think, cover the outlay which
is necesaary to be made, in fitting up tho Armory in
a proper manner. A more convenient, roomy .ml
eligible Bite for holding the Fair could not bo found
in the State, and if all wfll do their duty promptly
and energetically, we shall have such a gathering of
the people in the city next November, aa was never
seeninllsoon before. The merchant, mechanic,
tho hotel proprietor and boarding houso keeper; in
fact, every citizen of Macon will be benefited by
such a vast throng of visitors, as they will leave with
us hundreds of thousands of dollars. By
the Fair a success this year, success will ever attend
it in fntnre. By properly preparing for it, we can
insure success; and we believo that'the geographical
position of Macon will soon convince the people of
the State that here alone is .the point for holding
their annual State fairs, and other points will be
abandoned for such purposes. More anon.

Defeated.—We received the following telegram
yesterday from a member of Defiance Fire Compa
ny, No. 5, of this city:
Atlaxta, May 8,1869.
We have been beaten. Ho. S took the prize on
good looks to-day.’ Jobs.
Whilst we dislike to bear that onr boys have been
beaten, wo rejoice to know that their good look*
have been appreciated.
We cannot believer, however; that the Judges
looked “John” square in the face when they made
the award. If they did, we should like to know
what they call ugly.

The Gale oh Satukday Nioht—Destbcctioh or a
Cucech.—About 10 o’clock on Saturday night last,
the wind blew almost a hnrricano in this immediate
section. In addition to the prostration of many
shade trees, fencing, eta, in different parte of the
city, we regret to stato that it made a complete
wreck of the New Methodist Church in East Maoon.
It was a frame bnilding in conns of erection, and
all the frame-work bad been put np and partially
wcatherboaided, and about a fourth of the roof cov
ered in. It was literally demolished, and even
some of tho brick foundation pillars were overturn ed-
All the morticing and timber joints ware bunted
apart, rendering tho timbers useless in reconstruct

be commenced again at the beginning.
We greatly regret this accident, on account of onr
friends in East Macon, who have straggled so long
and laboriously to build themselves a church, aa they
cannot now proceed with the work of rebuilding
witbont appealing for aid; lmt we hope onr dtizena
win all contribute a mi to toward hclptog them in
their misfortune. They have already appointed a
committee to soak help on this side of the river, and
if our dtizena wfll contribute as they should de, un
der the circumstances, the hopes of onr East Macon
friends will soon be revived, for this accident baa
well-nigh crashed all they entertained ot having a
church of their own at an early day; Let all of ua

Pistol., The shot aroused Mr. Steven Collins, and
getting out of bed, he threw his gown around him,

Both looked each other in the face, bat Mr. C. could

Jso. Cotirsos worth Marxx—This gentleman

near the Macon A Brunswick railroad track the horse
manifested some little care about crossing the track,
aehe had observed the warning, ‘’Look out when
toe Whistle blows,” and stopped to look up and down
the road to fcee if the locomotive was in v,
M. had toe reins in bis bands, and the
“to which the horse was taking, for q disposition to
get frightened, and commenced palling on one line.
Of coarse toe bane made toe abort tarn demanded
of him, as afl good bones will, bot he tamed short
enough to spill the driver and his companion, and
upset the boggy. The crash made the bone believe
the engine was upon him, is he cam* T ery near be

whether the boggy was on its wheels or side, and
he jurt carried it along until it was diepoeed to atop
following him, and when it did stop, by pteae-meaL

Mr. M. was bruixed a little and could not follow
along, Mr. U. was unhurt. The buggy was brought
back in a basket, and the bone don’t know yet th->
anything of a serious nature occurred.
Poize Fight Without Stakes.—Jfr. Local: On
Sabbath morning, May 2d, an altercation took place
in the passenger abed. The peooos are weU-knowu
in this community—the canoe of the difficulty waa:
Wbo had toe beet right to escort toe other’s better-
half? One of the parties prodooed lioenae wl^jch be
said cost him one dollar and fifty cents; toe other
claimed that toe license was procured while Geor
gia was in too bands of toe Yankees, consequently
it wae null and void. A right sharp war of words
ensued. Both parties appeared brave as sheep, and
agreed to retire to same secluded spot to settle toe
difficulty. Tbo preliminaries being arranged, toe
combatants stripped for too fight—nature's weapons
being the choice. On stripping it was apparent to
toe spectators that E. had paid some attention to
his inner man since the Presidential election.
V., on appearing in too ring, looked chapfallen ;
he said bis cause wae a just one, and afl honest
men most sympathize with him. Bat be lacked in
everything that, to toe naked eye, constitutes a buf
fer”—stin he came np to toe scratch like a man.
E. squared off in his native style, (Corinth.) V.
dodged; E. followed np and got homo on V.’s nasal
organ and poor Y. went to grass.
Round second and last—V. come to the scratch
rather the worse for wear. Edg. led off and knocked
him into smithereens. Boots do your duty. After
a few kicks Y. halloaed enough, at the samo time
was willing to acknowledge tost his better-half was
no such a thing.
V. was born in the 18th century, in the New Do
ne is about 5 feet 8 inches high, and
weighs about 150 pounds. He is Conservative in
politics.
Edg. says be saw the light first in Hiugland and
Ireland at the same time—age about 47, weighs
weighs about 900 pounds; has a widowed wife and
family some where in Louisiana ; can't fix hia poli
tics ; was opposed to Yankees and reconstruction ;
was in toe Confederate service, Quartermaster
Department; joined the Radicals ; took the iron
clad ; repented of bis sins and rejoined too Demo
crats ; w*e appointed a city detective or spy, at a
salary of475 per month; made application to Join
the Union League and was refused. He is now
open to conviction. The party that pays him high
est price has him at their senriqs. M.
Counsel lx—The ministers of the Baptist Church
are beginning to arrive by almost every train, espe
cially those wbo Uvo at a great distance from Ma
con. Among them we note the arrival of Bev. J.
H. 8tribbUng, from toe central part of Texas.
Tho indications are that the Baptist Convention,
which meets in this dty on Thursday, will be veiy
largely attended by ministers of tost Church from
ail sections of toe country. Let our dtizena give
them a warm and hospitable reception. .
Conoa Sraaiwo—Three negroes named respec
tively Andrew Cray, Jim Brooke and Jim Wilson,
were tried before Justice Logan yesterday on a
charge of stealing cotton. The last named, a dray
man, turned States evidence, and, strange ae it may
appear, the first two were discharged under liia tes
timony. and Jim Wilson himself was bound over
to the next term of toe Superior Court in the sum of
4250. Ho waa caught fairly and squarely in a doli-
brate falsehood while on the witness stand, and by
his own testimony he exculpated the parties be
wanted to convict and convicted himself.
Hasbv Macaktht bad s crowded bouse last night
at Concert Hall. Of coarse he was, ms he always is,
great in any character he attempts to personate.
trim Estelle was also inimitable in her respective
roles, and both elicited the most vociferous applause.
To-night is their last appearand. If yon would
spend e most agreeable boor, be on hand early.
Matos's Cocst.—His Honor bad quite a lively
and interesting leveo yesterday morning. All toe
seats were taken in toe dress circle, and toe orches
tra chairs were occupied by those wbo had to faoo
the music for their misdeeds.
The first case upon which the majesty of munici
pal law peeled its eye. was a plain square drank to
which a man bad resorted because he got to the
passenger abed too late to take the train for At
lanta on Sunday night, with the boys who left to
participate in the firemen’s parade. Ho was fined
$4 for tardiness and 44 for getting drank, or be
conld jnst pay 48 on the drank and retire, which be
did.
A negro charged with violating hia contract was
discharged.
Three white men, for e little disorderly conduct
they had engaged in, were fined 410 each, which
they paid.,
A ease of stealing was continued, and the ooart
passed on to another drank, which it fined 45, and
thentook np» little fight that occurred at the pas
senger ihed on Sunday. In absence of testimony
the case waa continued and the court adjourned.

Editor* Telegraph: We are having fins
April showers. I never ssw better stands of
com and cotton. The farmers are generally
ploughing and weeding out their com. Some
few are forward enough to be ploughing and
weeding their cotton.
Wheat oaks crops are promising to yield
bountifully. Laborers can draw rations and
greenbacks dolly for their service in tho farms
by making application daring tho next month.
