WiSHrsoTos, Xay 7.—There hu been a severe
struggle over the Savannah Pcntoffice, Postmaster
General Crcaswell undoubtedly nominated Sims;
hut the President refused the commisekm. It ap-
pears that Sims and other extremists are desirous
of filling the Georgia Federal offices with negroes,
thus rebuking the Georgia Legislature for ex pell-

prominent Georgians also opposed the appointment
as mischievous. *

Eeoxz Jan Sometime between midnight and
daylight yesterday morning, two negroes named
Hunt and Henry Prirce, succeeded in breaking out
of the city gnard-house and effected their «*y»pe
One was in jail on a charge of stealing bacon and
the other for stealing a horee, and both were await
ing trial at the next term of the Superior Cdurt.
• The rascals haring torn off a few planks which
]ine the room on the inside, got to the brick wall,
and with a nail picked out the mortar between the
bricks and took them inside to prevent any alarm
they might cause from falling to the ground on the
outside, as they were working out from the second
story. Haring made a hole in the wall only fifteen
and a half by nine inches in size, they then tore up
their bed quilts or sheets into strips, and twisting
and tieing them together, made a cord with which
to let themselves down from their lofty quarters.
Two other negroes were in the room, and say that
all the above manoenvering wis done without then-
knowledge and while they were asleep. There is
one of two things about this statement. They either
sleep remarkably sound or they lie like blazes. We
rather think they refused to make an attempt to
escape for the same reason that a man named More-
hon gave, under similar circumstances. He was
sentenced to the Penitentiary at Milledgevillo for
life, and one evening a Urge squad of the convicts
got out, and Morehon could have easily gotten out
with them. He was asked why he refused to do so,
and be replied that he was afraid be would be re
captured, and might have to serve a double term in
the penitentiary.
