A Hmidrest Bushels Oats to the Acre.
We copy the following from the Colnmbns
Enquirer:
Mr C. A. Peabody has left in onr office a clus
ter of what he calls “another of his humbugs.”
It is a specimen of a new description of oats,
the seed of which he procured from Vermont,
and which is said to have been introduced into
this country from Sweden—one grain having
been found in a package of peas procured by
the Agricultural Bureau. There are in this
cluster fourteen or fifteen stalks, about five feet
in height, and of stems enormously large, and
all from a single grain! 1 The heads have not
yet made their appearance, the stalk being in
the stage called “the boot." It is therefore rea
sonable to suppose that the stalks have as yet
attained not much exceeding half their height!
The color is remarkably good, and the growth
evidently vigorous. Mr. Peabody has a field of
ten acres sown broadcast, besides some patches
in the drill and hills. Ho used 200 lbs. of Paci
fic Gnano to the acre, and sowed about the 20th
February. He counlp on a yield of . one .hun
dred Wm of seed oats per acre, If no disaster
overtakes the cropl It it said that thaSe Oats
havo produced even much more per acre at the
North. The blades are from half an inch to a
fall inch in breadth, and over a foot in length.
The variety is , certainly a wonderful one, and
promises to be very valuable.

The Quietude or JIatubitt.—Have you nev
er watched a young girl os she sits and thinks?
The pleasant smile stealing round her lips—no
frown or anxious care on her forehead—no
pained look in hereyeai O, my poor, weary-
hearted reader, who has, like me, gone through
life’s struggle, what would you not give to be
like her, to be as yon once wero ; but that,
with many another joy, has passed away from
you for ever. You are only too glad now to sit
a while and enjoy today’s peace, and you have
no trembling hopes, no feverish longings for
to-morrow. ’ It does seem too bad that as we
grow older all ■faith in the f utnre vanishes, and
anticipation, in itself a pleasure, leaves ns.
The time comes to ns all when thinking is only
pain, forit is either a sad, sad retrospect, or. a
foreshadowing of coming trouble. Yon that are
young prize the sunny days that are passing like
a breath; enjoy them while yon can, for beyond
there lies a dreary waste.—-Vy (hen Story.

Have we Mormons living among us ? is the
latest sensation. Since the announcement that
there are one hundred and fifty men in New
York, having from nine to twelve wives each,
every one seems to have been on the gui vice,
And the fact comes to light that there is a good
ly number of Mormons in onr own city. One
individual residing on Fourteenth street is
pointed out as the possessor of four wives, and
the most satisfactory part of the matter to the
man, perhaps, is that they all have situations in
Government offices. It is estimated by those
who pretend to know, that we have more than a
v Mormon families in onr midst, and that
they are increasing in number rapid y in large
cities.— Washington Cor. Augusta Press.
