Chief Justice Chose. .
We feel it to be the duty of the Southern
Frese to express the general approbation felt by
the Southern people nt many of the late rulings
in the important cases before him made by thin
distingnished Jndge and Statesman. We have
been so long accustomed to the flippancy, or
ignorance, or brutalities of our carpet-bag Ju
diciary throughout the Southern States, on
questions vitally interesting to ns, both as prop
erty and politic"-J questions, that accurate, tem
perate and sensible language from the Bench,
haa the same effect on our feelings,'as we fancy
the summer rains have on the parched earth.
Onr citizens aro delighted to witness any thing
in the action of the Government calculated to
revive their confidence in it.
The speeches of Senator Sprague, and the
Judicial decisions of Chief Justice Chase, ore
consequently highly appreciated by all those
who desire to see the Government once more
conducted in a spirit of reason, and in conform
ity with law.—Montgomery Advertiser.
Probable Beskwatioji of Belcher.—The Au
gusta Chronicle and Sentinel of Sunday says
that the rumor that Belcher (colored) had re
signed gains ground on tho street. The reason
assigned is that competent officers cannot he
found to serve under him. In addition to this
it is now rumored that B. F. Hall has been ap
pointed in his place. Dr. Hall is a man of abil
ity, but me regret to say that he is a sort of
Longstrent man, and believes that what Grant
says is right. We hope that General Grant will
get suited after a while; we are.
Facts for the Ladies.—I hare a Wheeler A
Wilson machine, (No. 289), bought of Mr.
Gardner in 1853, he having used it a year. I
have used it constantly, in shirt manufacturing
as well as the family sewing sixteen years. My
wife ran it four years and earned between $700
and $800 besides doing her household work.
I have never expended fifty cents on it for re
pairs. It is to-day in the best of order, stitch
ing fine linen bosoms nicely. I started manu
facturing shirts with this machine, and now
have over one hundred of them in use. I have
paid at least $11000, for the stitching done by
this old machino and it will do os much now os
any machine I have. W. F. Tatlor.

Scrofulous poison is one of tho most destructive
enemies of our race. Often, this unseen and unfclt
tenant of tho organism undermines tho constitution,
and Invites tho attack of enfeebling or fatal diseases,
Without cxeltinga suspicion of its presence. Again,
it seems to breed infection throughout the body, and
then, on some favorable occasion, rapidly develop
into one or other of Its hideous forms, either on tho
eurfaco or among tho vitals. In the latter, tuber
cles may be suddenly deposited in tho lungs or
heart, or tumors formed in tho liver. Thcso facts
make the occasional use of tho Sarsaparilla as a
preventive, advisable. i;i
It is a mistake to suppose that so long os no erup
tions or humors appear, there must bo no scrofulous
taint. These terms of derangement may Oiever
occur, and yet the vital forces of the body bo so re
duced by Its subtle agency, as materially to impair
the health And shorten the duration of life. It id a
common error, also, that scrofula Is strictly heredi
tary. It docs, indeed, descend from parent to child, -
but Is also engendered in persons bom of pure
blood. Low living, indigestion, foul air, licentious
habits, nnclcanliness, and tho depressing vices gen
erally, produce it. Weakly constitutions, where not
fortified by tho most constant and judicious care,
are peculiarly liable to it. Yet tho robust, also,
whoso turbid blood swells tho veins with an appar
ently exuberant vitality, are often contaminated,
and on the road to its consequences. Indeed, no
class or condition can depend on immunity from
It, nor foci insensible to tho importance of an effec-
tual remedy. - ■

obstinate maladies by any medicine. Deueorrheea

extraneous matters in the blood, have their remedy
also in this medicine. For Diver Complaints,
torpidity, inflammation, abcess, etc., caused by
rankling poisons in the blood, we unhesitatingly
recommend the Sarsaparilla.
