cal estimate of the exact yield of an acre. They
have counted the stalks in a given area, in va
rious portions of the field; and, having obtain
ed the number of stalks to the acre, have count
ed the kernels in various heads, by which they
have figured out the number of kernels to the
acre. There is nothing in the way of a com
plete demonstration of the yield, bnt the size of
the kernels. But taking the average figures,
“laid down in the books,” they cypher out the
most gratifying results. The figures totally re
fuse to^how anything less than about 50 bush
els to the acre, while if the grains should prove
“as large as they onght to be,” the yield will
run considerably higher! Altogether, the rival
ry, among the different contestants is interest
ing. Dr. Hamilton, Mr. Bancroft, and Mr.
Bloomfield, are, we believe, the leading com
petitors for the premium. Several others are
right after them.
We learn that Dr. Hamilton, and perhaps
others, intend to commence cutting wheat next
Monday.

Mpecimeu of Black Oats.
Lachess Hill, Ga., May 29, 1869.
Mb. T?. J. Plant—Dear Sir: I send yon a
bunch of oats grown by me. They are the
Black Spring Oat, from the eastern shoro of
Maryland, were sown on upland the 1st week in
February. The spring has been too dry for them
and especially has the dry cold winds for tho
last month injured them. Yon will see that the
blades npon the straw are fine from the drouth,
and the head not so good os it should have been.
I have a three acre lot of this kind—all not qnite
so good.
You can show them to Mr. Clisbyof the Tele-
oBArn. I see ho is blowing some oats for Mr.
Peabody. Yours truly,
Qtnxx L. Howard. .
P. S. The land is a com field and manured
last year for Potatoes.
We are indebted to Mr. Plant for forwarding
the bnnch of oats referred to. It is five feet
six inches tall and tho stalks as big as a white
day pipe stem. The heads are long and full,
and tho oats large and heavy. In short,’ it is
Altogether a remarkable specimen, and is worth
“blowing,” if editorial mention, in this way, can
be so termed. Onr “blowing of some oats for
Mr. Peabody" amounted simply to the repnbli-
cation of somo remarks made by him before an
Alabama agricultural association upon a new
species of oats he had introduced, of which be
proposed to raise one hundred bushels to the
acre. Wo .never saw Mr. Peabody and never had
a line from him npon any subject—Eds.

like to hear from tho crops in this portion of the
' country, I write you this:
- Crops, os a general thing, look pretty well
considering the late spring wa have had. I do
not think I ever saw com look healthier in my
lifo, though rather email for the time of year.
Negroes are working better than usual, and
seem determined to let polities alone. Wheat
is ruined with mst; mine has it on the blade and
stalk, I do not think I can make more than half
a crop. Now and then yon can find a crop that
is not afflicted with rust. Guano makes the grass
grow very rapidly, and keeps the fanners qnite
busy in keeping it under.
What think you of a reunion of the Fourth
Georgia Regiment at an early day. Please ad

Think, for reasons assigned by a correspon
dent, some days ago, it had better be postponed.

We attended tho Spring Session of the Supe
rior Court at this village last week. Quite a
number of lawyers were in attendance, but the
business was in most eases of bnt little general
interest The Court adjourned on Thursday.

Nowton, probably, does tho largest business
for a village of its size in the State, and repre
sents a large extent of the best ootton lands in
Goorgiu. One of its merchants, who began bu
siness there in 1848 without a dollar, and who
never attended school a day in his life, succeed-,
cd|in amassing a large fortune there previous
to tho war, and since tho war has paid endorsed
papers to tho amount of forty thousand dollars.
Ho plants this year about 2,700 acres of land,
embracing five or six valuable plantations, all
his own, we believo.
Newton will be a place of considerable impor
tance some day. It now has a good hotel, kept
by Mr. W. W. Livingston, whose liberality to
tho press-gang is unequalled in this section of
the State. Wo bespeak for Mr. Livingston the
patronage he so richly merits from on apprecia
tive public.
A Sunday-school celebration was had here on

Storm in Decatur County.
A terrible whirlwind, accompanied by rain
aud hail, passed over portions of this county on
last Saturday afternoon. We were at the resi
dence of Mr. Josiah G. Jones, on the Chatta
hoochee river, at the time of tho storm, and
witnessed sane off its devastations. Zb. Jam*’
u-honse was blown down, one man and mule
t under it, bnt were protected by tho cog-
1, which was-of sufficient strength to pre
vent a portion of tho building from falling to
the ground. Another man was pulled from
under the house by his mule, which becoming
frightened at tho cracking noiso of the falling
building, rushed out, the man holding the bridle
to prevent his getting loose from him, and was
thus saved from instant death, as that portion
of the building which was ovct Rim fell to the
ground. Quite a number of other hands were
running to get under the gin-house when it fell.
A number of trees were prostrated, doing con
siderable damage to the crops and fenoes.
Tho hail was not observable at Mr. Jones’,
bnt a few miles distant we were informed that
Mr. Simpson Lewis sustained serious injury,
both from wind and haiL Hi« com was beaten
to shreds by the hail-stones, trees were blown
down, and portions of his fence taken up and
carried a considerable distance by the careering
whirl-wind. —Baiabridge Argue.
