Farm*’* Pio-Xtc—The membera of the Ogle
thorpe Fire Company, No. 1, and Bcreren Hoee
Company, of Savannah, together with many mem
bers of the Macon Fire Department and a large
□ember of ladle* attended a splendid pic-nic at
Bussell & Peter’s Brewery yesterday, tendered the
visiting Are companies by the liberal and hospitable
proprietors of that establishment.
There were three bands of music present—tbs
Italian string band, and colored brass band of this
city, and the very fine and efficient colored band
from Savannah. The Italians famished their de-
iightfa) masic for the dancers, and the braes bands
took advantage of the intermission between setts,
to enliTen the occasion with some of their very best
pieces; whilst the iced lager and lemonade, of the
most superior quality, flowed all day for the com
pany ae freely and steadily as the gashing rivulets
from the mountain ride.
The dance began about 11 o’clock a. u., and ex
cepting the boor spent at the dinner table, was kept
np all day. The dinner waa a magnificent one in
deed, and reflects the highest culinary honors upon
those who got it np. In fact, everything was got
ten np in style and all who were present seemed to
enjoy themselves. They could scarcely do other
wise. There were beautiful, interesting and chinn
ing ladies and misses; a lovely spot in which to en
joy their company in a dance or social converse;
there waa the magic strains of music to charm the
senses; there were a bind of jovial, hospitable,
gallant, brave men; there was plenty to eat and
rivers of lager and lemonade to drink; and, really,
there was nothing wanting to gratify the taste or
sense of any refined and intelligent lady or gentle
man.
We are sure that all who were present will long
remember the place and the occasion, and will ever
remember, with thanks and gratitude, tbo liberal
and hospitable proprietors of the Macon Brewery.
About E o'clock r. ic., it was announced that the
time for the departure of the “Savannah boys” had
arrived, and that they must return to the city to
take the evening train to their beautiful homes on
the sea, and the company began to arrange for
taking leave of a place at which they had spent one
of the pleasantest days of the season, arid in a
short while afterwards, stillness reigned where, but
an hour before, music, laughter, song and hilarity
had held high carnival.
Quite a luge crowd of citizens and firemen of Ma
con assembled at tbo passenger shed at 6 o'clock,
to take leave of the visitors and bid them good-bye.
The parting was lively and Jovial while, at the same
time, a feeling of regret stole into the heart aa the
train moved off, and the band commenced that fa
miliar old air, “Good-bye." Good-bye! Good-bye!
waa responded by s thousand longs, and in a mo
ment all was stall, and the gallant, brave boys were
gone. May they have s safe and pleasant trip home,
and health and sneeees ever attend them.

THE VITAL STATISTICS OF THE UNTIED
STATES
Show that periodical fevers and acute chronic dis
orders of the stomach and bowels, are among the
most prominent and fatal diseases in this country.
Disobedience to the laws of health, ss regards diet;
the use of pernicious stimolsnts; and the wear and
tear of business excitement, and of “fast life” gen
erally, have much to do with the prevalence of these
maladies in our cities; while in the West, and
especially in the newly opened districts, they are
chiefly doe to malaraia, unwholesome water, and
the exposure and privation incident to life in new
settlements.
Now, it is a fact that it is as possible to proteict the
human system against these maladies, as to guard
life and property against the incursion* of assassins
and thieves. Strengthen tbs vital organization
with HOSTETTERS STOMACH BITTERS, and it
becomes as capable of resisting the active principle
of epidemic or endemic disease, aa a fireproof sale
is of resisting the action of combustion. .This is
the experience of thousands who have remained un
scathed by malarious disorders in the sickliest sea-
sons, while their neighbors, who neglected to tone
and regulate their systems with this unequalled
medicinal stimulant, have fallen thick and fast

Druonirn. Pic-Nic—Bnrzm Exccssroir.—A Dew
feature in pic-nic excursions has been inaugurated
by the proprietors of the Macon Wood Yard, which
has proved to be one of the most pleasant mode* of
spending s day which could be enjoyed by the bellas
and beaux of Macon. One of the boats of Judge
Iverson has been fitted np for dancing, having a
floor of 60 feet by 18. sufficient for three or four
setts—covered over with a dense arbor of bushes, it
is s complete protection from the sun, whilst the
cool water and gentle breeze constantly blowing on
the river, make it a most agreeable place for enjoy
ment. Leaving tha wood yard in tho morning, the
boat is propelled np the stream at the rate of about
a mile an hour. Going np some four or five miles,
tho party return to a landing opposite a very fins
spring on the lands of Judge Williams, s few hun
dred yards from the river, where, under s beautiful
grove of trees, they enjoy their lunch and other
festivities until about five o’clock in the evening,
when repairing to the boat again, they glide gently
down the river, dancing all the time to the music
of a splendid string hand and passing down about
a mile below the city, then round and return to the
wharf between eight and nine o'clock, thus spending
a whole day in a most delightful reunion, enjoying
tha music and the dance daring the whole excursion.
This agreeable pastime may be enjoyed at a trifling
expense, not costing more than from a dollar to a
dollar and a half for each couple. Two such trips
were made last season, one in the day and one by
moonlight, the pleasures of which will long be re
membered by those who were present. One has al
ready been made this season by* party of some forty
or fifty ladies and gentlemen, which waa pronounced
one of the most agresblo excursions ever made in
the neighborhood of Macon.
Wo commend this most pleasant mode of spend
ing s day or an evening on the water to tho young
and gay, the belles and beaux, and all lovers of in-
nooent enjoyment in Macon. The use of the boat
and an excellent crew can be obtained at any time.
Fin Vnreumn.—A gentleman just returned from
ManhallviUe, informs os that the vineyard of Mr.
J. A. Sperry, of that place, is certainly one of the
finest In the country. Our informant says he count
ed on one vine, twenty full bandies of grapes. The
grape growers of Germany, France and this coun
try, will yet discover the adaptability and superior
ity of Central Georgia lands for the culture of tho
grape.

The best tests of the merits of my proprietary
article is to ascertain what is thought of it at borne
where it la manufactured. Such a test Lippman’s
Pyrafugs can well stand, as to-day it la decidedly
the favorite remedy for chills and fever, dumb ague
and other disease of a malarious origin, in the city
of Savannah where it is prepared. The principal
druggists of the dty would aa much think of doing
without castor oil in their stores as to be without
this popular (and deservedly eo) remedy. It is a
vegetable preparation free from deleterious drugs,
and acta as a tonic upon the entire system, thereby
invigorating the system, so much so as to enable it
to throw off disease. Pyrafuge does not nauseate
or sicken the patient, and can be taken by the most
olleato persons without fear.

Pxbll—Among the several very pretty banners
which docorated tho steamer of the Oglethorpes,
when in line of procession, on Monday evening, we
noticed one of pink silk, trimmed with silver edg
ing, hearing the motto: “We kindle to extinguish,"
and just below this banner and attached to its staff
waa a wreath of flowers encircling the words; “Peris
gives the widow’s mite." We did not understand it,
as, doubtless, was the esse with many others, and
we got a member of tho company to explain it The
banner to known to the company as the coal cart
banner of the “John W. Anderson.” The cart to
decorated every year by the beautiful and interest
ing little daughter of Hon. P. M. Russell, of Sa
vannah, President of the Oglethorpe Fire Co. No.
1. Little Peria is the pride and pot of the com
pany, and on all firemen's parades, she insists upon
decorating the coal cart and riding on the engine,
and so tastefully has she done this at times thst she
has home off tha prize of a silver cup on two oc
casions.' - . —
8o the two little girls thst looked so pretty and
sweet when riding through the streets on the “John
W. Anderson,” were Peria S. Russell and From, E.
White—the latter a daughter of Cipt. Charles J.
White, of Savannah, and a grand daughter of Judge
Russell. ( ’ -r
