MARSEILLES VESTS,
Loss In Cotton Weight*.
The Columbus papers still complain of loos in
cotton weights from that city. The Son and
Times of Sunday says:
One of the most prominent commission mer
chants in Columbus, yesterday read us a letter
from a cotton factor in New York, which showed
that seventeen bales of cotton between Colum
bus and New York bad lost 470 pounds in weight,
an average of 27.65 pounds per bale. One bale
lost 80 pounds, another sixty and so on. The
writer added that the cotton was sold at an ad-
vonco of 3Jo; yet, on account of the loss in
weight, tbo sale brought him in loser $93 20, not
considering < 'niminums and interest.
The same merchant shipped a lot of 108
bales to Savannah. On arrival at that point the
difference in the weight of tho lot was 700
pounds, worth, at the pries paid, $200, which is
lost to somebody.
It is evident there is somo stealing going on.
Another thing is plain, ano all ought to know it,
for it has been impressed upon them often
enough—that it will pay farmers to completely
cover their bales with strong bagging, and that
it it to the benefit of shipper, to have the sample
holes sewed up. It is very easy to' take out
handfuls of tho staple from these holes.
Caesura bt a Railboad Cab.—By tho Mont
gomery train, says the Columbus Sun of the
29tb, we beard of a distressing accident which
occnrred at Opelika, Ala., yesterday morning.
As told ns, it seems that tho trains wore about
separating when a young gentleman discovered
he was on the wrong route, and hurriedly
snatched up his shawl nnd endeavored to jump
on board another car that was moving. He
missed his hold nnd was thrown upon the track.
If he had thus remained he wonld have escaped
without any serions injury. Tho front wheels
htd passed He was endeavoring to quickly
crawl out, and had partly snoeeeded, when the
the rear wheels passed over a little below the
middlo of his body, crushing him badly and
almost entting him in two. 'When the train left
it was thought he wonld livo only a few moments.
The name of tho young man Is Alex. GilfiUau,
and he was traveling for a house in Charleston.
P. 8.—By the Opelika train we learn that Mr.
G. was taken to the Opelika House, and after
lingering for an hour and a half, death relieved
him of his sufferings. Ho was connected will*
the house of Lengncck A. Sell, dealers in fancy
goods, at Charleston. His remains will be car
ried to that city, where he has relatives, for
intermont.

There is a decided movement on foot for the

reoently been entered into for a lino of steam
ers running from Now York to Samana Bay.
An effort is being made to mn a railroad through
tho richest part of the island, and it is expected
that during the year there will bo considerable
immigration. Baez, it is said, rather favors the
project. He is a mulatto, educated in France,
and is desirous of more intimate association
with whites. His great ambition is to come to
Washington as United States Senator from the
State of Domingo.
• A Negro Jcuoe.—The telegraph gave notice,
some days ago, of the appointment of Colonel
J. W. Mason, a negro, of Cbiquot county, Ar
kansas. as Judge of tho Siem Leone or Cape
town Court of Arbitration, provided for under
the treaty for the suppression of the slave trade.
A Washington correspondent gives tho following
history of the favored individual: “ Colonel Ma
son is a colored man, bom a slave in Arkansas,
made free by his father, and educated at Obcr-
lin, whore ho graduated. Ho afterwards entered
the University of Paris, whence he graduated
with honor, and entered the French army, in
which he served with distinction, coming out of

Clotcr in CiuLRKE County.—Much has been
Trritten for years about the adaptation of clover
to this latitude. A view of the numerous clover
patches about Athens would convince the moat
skeptical. Mr. Bloomfield has just , cut about
two tona to the acre, and the yield of several
other lots will be about equally as large. By
August a seoond crop will yield probably half as
much more, or if plowed under, will afford a
richer dressing than any other means of fertil
izing wonld secure. The small expense attend
ing the growth of hay, and the certainty of rich
returns, would seem a autficient inducement to
a more general cultivation of the grasses. And
yet we notice even many gardens about town
planted in cotton. Nothing seems to destroy
the abject allegiance of the people to the fasci
nating old king.—Bitn Tier.
