THE VITAL STATISTICS OF THE UNITED
STATES
Show that periodical fevers and acute chronic dis
orders of the stomach and bowels, are among the
moot prominent and fatal diseases in this country.
Disobedience to the laws of health, as regards diet;
the nse of pernicious stimulants; and the wear and
tear of business excitement, and of “fast life” gen
erally, have much to do with the prevalence of these
maladies in our cities; while in tho West, and
especially in the newly openod districts, they are
chiefly doe to malaraia, unwholesome water, and
the exposure and privation incident to lifo in new
settlements.
Now, it to a fact that it to as possible to protect the
human system against these maladies, as to guard
life and property against the incursions of assassins
and thieves. Strengthen 'the vital organization
with HOSTETTERS STOMACH BITTERS, and it
becomes as capable of resisting the active principle
of epidemic or endemic disease, ss a tiro-proof safe
to of resisting the action of combustion. This is
the experience of thousands who have remained un
scathed by malarious disorders in tho sickliest sea-
eons, while their neighbors, who neglected to tone
and regulate their systems with this unequalled
medicinal stimulant, have fallen thick and fast
around them. Weakness invitee disease. Vigor
repels it. Help nature to fight the good fight with
infection, whether it be in the air, the wster, or the
■oil, with this matchless preparation—a compound
of the rarest vegetable extracts with tho purest of
all diffusive stimulants.

CITY AFFAIRS.
THURSDAY MORNING, JUNE 3, 1869.
Tnx PosT-omcx Again.—We learned from a gen
tleman on the street yesterday, that Turner had
sent orders here for the immodiato fitting up of the
Bond Store, on Cherry street, as ho intends to make
that building the Macon Poet-office. Our informant
gave us this aa semi-official information, with the
remark that he had no doubt that it was true; but
Mr. Bond says he knows nothing of it.
It to also stated that Turner has expressed to s
friend in this city, by letter, his determination not
to return to Macon, as he fears that his life would
be taken; and that he will appoint a white deputy
to conduct the post-office. We do not vouch for
theeo statements, and givo them ae they are fre
quently repeated on tho streets. Wo do know,
however, that tho hopes cherished by all of our
peoplo that Turner would never be the Macon Post
master, are now nearly extinguished, and tho be
lief is almost general that ho or his deputy will
soon bo installed in the office.
As to Tomer’s fears for his life should he return
to Macon, wo have only to’ say that if he really
tertains them, he to a greater fool than we have
heretofore believed him to be. He knows that ho
is as safe here as elsewhere if he conducts himself
properly; but he to one of the infamous few in this
State that have got office and power by slandering,
traducing and misrepresenting the people of Geor
gia. He has no real fears of returning to Macon
but would, doubtless, like to make it appear so to
the authorities at Washington.
tamed his bone around and rode toward the ne
groes. and the one whom be did not recognize,
punched Wiley in the side and motioned heck to
Capt. 8_, when Wiley immediately started toward
the river; but seeing that he was about to be over
taken, he Jumped over into the shrubbery
Jw-t bade of the Lamar bouse and made h i
escape. Cape 8- then returned and overtook the
other negro who had a carpet aack~ and drawing hia
pistol commanded him to stop. The rascal com
menced begging, and toiling Capt. Root to shoot;
that he had done nothing; it was the other negro
be wanted. The Captain told Mm be would take
him along anyhow, and to march straight down the Ve ,-
street in front of the horse or he would kill him.
The rascal did as he was bide until he approached
nearly opposite Mrs. Ella' residence, on the porch
of which were seated several ladies, when he dodged
around the boxed trunk of a large tree between
Capt. S. and the ladies and made aegoea the street,
knowing that he could not bo fired-upon without
endangering the life of some one of tho ladies.
Capt. 8. whirled bis boree out of line quick as possi
ble and fired, but without effect. The shot made
his horse perfectly unmanageable with fright, and
before he could cheek him up and get another shot
the negro had managed to JumfV into the hushes
where his accomplice had escaped, and both. got
away before the Captain could obtain - assistance.
Capt. S describes tho last mentioned negro as
very black and rery much resembling Bob Wagner
in size and appcaranco. The carpet bag captured
from him contained a fine pair Of panU, a pair of
boots and an overcoat, the latter, probably the
property of Mr. Base, as be was recently robbed of
such a coat. —
MalOB’s Cocbt.—Three cues were docketed in
the court yesterday. The first of which wae against
Messrs. H. AE. Daly, for getting hot as pepper
when they taw a policeman's dog twinging to the
ear of one of their bogs and that, too, right in their
store—as the hog ran into the store for protection
when the dogs got after it. The Daly's and their
clerks let tn on the dogs with ax-handles, • and one
banged away at it with a pistol, and so they were
up for dis. eon. and shooting in the corporation.
Hia Honor thought that the bog was on his own
ground when he got into the store, and that the
Daly's were not to blame for their prompt and gallant
defends of their own porker, aqnea&ng for protection
on his native heath, and dismissed the ease. A
righteous derision. O Jndga! «*.
The second ease wsa against Leroy Jackson, s
negro, for stealing s pistol. Leroy swore positively
that be did not steal the pistol. A negro witness
swore positively that Leroy did steal it, and that he
saw him when be did it. This testimony sent the
thief on the streets for thirty days.
The Third case was against Jan* Cummings, a
negress, for disorderly conduct, in that she bad
gone to the bouse of Anna Roberts, another negrass,
and, right before her eyes and at night, had taken
her husband from his lawful bed and board and ap
propriated him to her own use. The Mayor don’t
allow any such proceedings in his Jurisdiction, and
he fined Jans (20 or twenty days in thsgnardbooas,
