The War Over the <1 raves.
Perhaps the best idea of tho facte and feelings
involved in tho recent onslaught by tho “Grand
Army of tho Republic” upon the graves of the
dead Confederates, may be obtained from tho
following by the Waalyigton correspondent of
the New York Times:
Tho only events of any importance which oc
curred here today ' Sunday) were the decora
tion ceremonies of tho soldiers’ graves at three
or four of the smaller national cemeteries, and
the religious observances in most of tho church
es. The sermons had more or leas reference
to the same subject. Considerable bitter feel
ing and animosity appears to have been aroused
by tho distinction made between the rebel and
the Union dead in tho solemnities of yesterday
and to-day. . The nnkindnesa, to give it a gentle
term, finds vent in newspaper communications,
church sermons and general conversation. Tho
members of tho Grand Army of the Republic, in
maintaining their side of tho caio, and one or
two of the city clergymen have expressed them-
selyes in strong terms in reference to it Rev.
Mr. Newman, Chaplain of the Senate, in his ora
tion yesterday, bud that the Representatives of
this nation could never sanction the decoration
of the Confederate soldiers’ jpwves until it had
liecn first decided by the Christian Church to
pay honors to Judas Iscariot, and until we hod
ourselves agreed to commemorate Benedict Ai
d's DRAUGHT.

Tho owners, when Baked, reported their crops
backward, but oil seemed cheered by the pros
pect of a very fair crop, provided tbe caterpil
lar does not appear. Wo .were gratified to no
tice immenso fields of corn and oats, all along
tho road, the Utter new ripening for tbe gieUe;
and while oottan has by no means been neglec
ted, the fanners have acted wisely and planted
for nn abundant provision crop. Tho dry
weather afforded an abundant-provision crop.
The dry weather afforded opportunity to destroy
the grass, and it was pleasing to notice that
nearly all tho industrious farmers could boost
of olean crops. Their stock, liko their fields,
were in good condition, and should tho season
continue favorable, farmers along that whole
ronto will be blessed with plentiful crops.

Disgracing Patriotism.
That officer of marines who so outraged all
the deoencies of humanity at Arlington perhaps
thought ho was in some way commending him-
self: for great zeal to the powers that be ; and
either he has a most unjustifiable opinion of
thoso powers, or it is a bad omen for tho conn-
try if they are to be pleased in that way. Docs
this functionary reflect the views that prevail
near headquarters ? Is it possible that we can
not see bow to be patriots without being brutes?
Is it possible that our respect for a great cause
requires us to exercise a mean snpe^jsion over
Uio actions and thoughts of those whoso sorrows
differ from ours in their direction ? Is this hor
rible tyranny of a majority to go into the sacred
domain of the grave, too, and shall no ofie be
grieved over, or monmed with sentimental
usage if happened to be wrong ? Shame on the
zest that pursues a quarrel beyond the grave.—
In the United States pf America freedom has
been much cramped for some time, but we al
ways desired to believe that it was only necessa
rily so. Permit us, men in authority, to believe
that there is still freedom for a woman to go to
the grave of her son or her lover and east npon
it a token of remembrance. If there is not,
what better are yon than the brutal despots that
made Austria a byword among nations ?

Woman Srmuo*.—Yesterday, iir the John
Street Methodist Church, tho women voted for
officers. The polls were open in the afternoon
and ovening, and the rain kept tho ladies back.
Abont six odock, however, they came in an
avalanche—a hundred together. One woman,
who saw her husband about to vote, pounced
upon him, took tho ticket oat of his hand,'and,
having inspected it, said, “Yon may vote that,
dear; it is all right.” Whereupon one of tho
elders groaned inwardly, and said, “That’s what
