CITY AFFAIRS,
BTT TELEGRAPH.
TUESDAY MORNING, JUNE 8, 1869.
Asnazw Fnuiz College.—The annnal exami
nation and commencement exercises of ttua very
popular and ably conducted institution, at Cuthbert,
Georgia, will begin on Friday, the 18th instant, on
which and the next day, the primary and prepara
tory classes will be examined.
On Sunday the 20th, Bev. A. A. Lipscomb, D. D.,
Chancellor of the State Cnrversily. will preach the
commencement sermon. On the Monday and Tues
day following, the regular college classes will be
examined; and on Wednesday, the interesting class
in physical training will give a public exhibition, and
at night the annual musical concert will bo given.
On Thursday, 24th, commencement day, General
John R. Gordon will deliver the annual literary ad
dress ; and at 7 ?. w., the same day, fifteen yonng
ladies read their graduating essays and receive their
diplomas; and on Friday there is to be a beautiful
and classic presentation of Tableaux riranlt, to
condodo by a cantata—Flora's Festival.
All this win be wen worth seeing and hearing,
and, impossible, we shall attend, in response to a
kind invitation bom Bev. Dr. A. L. Hamilton, the
eminent and worthy President of tbs institution.
Moke ExcocsAGnro.—Wo have had the pleasure,
within the past few days, of meeting and convere-
ing »)th qniffl % number of planters in tiiis imme*
diato section of Georgia, and were glad to learn
from aU of them, that the crop prospects are much
mote encouraging than they were a couple of weeks
since. The warm, genial son, since that time, has
imparted a wonderful vitality to the drooping, sick
ly looking cotton plants which struggled through tlio
cold damp rains of May, and they now look beautiful
and are growing rapidly. Com is also looking re
markably well, considering the unfavorable season
through which it has just passed, and if nothing
hereafter occurs in the way of a drouth, the yield
of this crop win be very good for tbo acreage In cul
tivation.
Several planters* who are now harvesting their
wheat, express themselves to ns as weU satisfied with
the quality and quantity per acre which they have
garnered, whilst we have met one or two gentlemon
who complain that their wheat failed to fill out as
welt as they hoped for. Altogether, and in general
terms, the crop prospects in central Georgia, are
now quite encouraging.
Ws are crowded for space this morning, and
several local items are left over.

SCIENCE ADVANCES.
Aa soon as an article purporting to bo of utility
has been tested, and Its merits endorsed by public
opinion, unprincipled parties endeavor to replenish
their depleted parses by counterfeiting, and sob-
stitnting a spurious for the genuine article. Some
limo since, mercury, to tho disgulso of pill*, pow
ders, Ac., was given for all diseases of the stomach
and liver, while quinine was freely administered for
tho chills. At length HOSTETTER'S STOMACH
RITTERS made Us advent, and an entire now sys
tem of healing was inaugurated. The beoofidal
affects of this valuable preparation were at once
acknowledged, and mineral poisons suffered to sink
into that obscurity to which an enlightened age has
consigned them. There have boon many spurious
Bitters palmed upon the community, which, after
trial, have been found perfectly worthless, while
HOSTETTER'3 has proved a blessing to thousands,
who owe to it their restoration to health.
For many years wo have watched the steady

to public estimation, and its benefident effect* ae a
core for aU complafato arising from the stomach of
a morbid nature, and we are free to say that it can
be relied upon aa a certain relief and remedy. Ita
proprietors have made the above preparation, after
years of careful study and sitting, and are now
reaping the reward claimed by this valuable specific,
and which they so richly merit. It is the only
preparation of tho kind that is reliable to an caeee,
and it therefore demands the attention of the
afflicted.

and other diseases of a malarious origin, to tho city
of Savannah where it is prepared. The principal
druggteta of the city would as much think of doing
without castor oil in their stores aa to be without
this popular (and deservedly so) remedy. It is a
vegetable preparation free from deleterious drugs,

invigorating the system, so much so as to enable it
to throw off disease. Pyrafuge does not nauseate
or sicken the patient, and can be taken by the most

stealthily that we are not aware of its approach un

The President has submitted a series of questions
to tho Attorney-General regarding the political po

The recent massacre in Kansas ia attributed to
the shooting of a squaw. Eleven citizens are
known to have perished in retaliation. —
The Radicals have carried the election. The op
ponents made littlo contest, and the polls were
abandoned to the negroes.
A very serious riot occurred in the second ward.
The negroes chased a conservative black man to his
house and assailed tho boose. The inmates escaped
to the rear. The conservative found refuge in tbo
upper story. The police surrounded tho house,
brought the conservative down, enclosed him to s
bollow square and took him to the poll*, when he
voted. The negroes now became furious, threw
volleys of stones and fired occasional pistols.
The Chief of Polios was hurt in tho arm. He or
dered his force to flro over thc’mob. This increased
the mob’s violence, when the police were compelled
to fire a volley directly into them, killing one, and
wounding three, when tho mob fled.
Earlier to the day a policeman was cut with a ra
zor, and seriously beaten, to the Sixth Ward.
A tree fight, with several harmless pistol shots,|
occurred in the Seventh Ward.
In the Seoond Ward, Julius Wallace, colored, was
knocked from his buggy and beaten, for having
scratched his ticket The police rescued Wallace,
but were badly battered. Timothy Rogers was also
badly beaten, for voting tho citizens’ ticket.
The rioting was oonfined entirely to tho negroes.
Tho police havo behaved well. Tho negroee show
no disposition t? molest the whites, so far, bat they
are drinking freely, which causes much apprehen
sion for safety during tho night
| The turbulence seems to be subsiding. The
[prompt action of tbo police seems to hare subdued
the more violent while the orders to the matinee
[to hold themselves to readiness quiets tho fears of
the people. It is jnst to say that no respectable
colored citizens of Washington participated to, or
