Mit.t.ftxjkvtllz, Ga., June 9, 18C9.
Editors Telegraph: A recent hasty visit to
f tho western portion of Hancock county gives
mo an opportunity to say that the crops in that
section are progressing satisfactorily. Just now
in that region, and also hereabouts, we are suf
fering from protracted drought; bnt cotton and
corn are still growing well, and maintain a
healthy promise for tho fnturo. Tho writer
hereof can boast of numerous “sguares” on
cotton. Wheat crops are undergoing harvest
ing, and the promise for a reasonable yield is
good. It is to be hoped that more attention to
the cultivation of wheat in Middle Georgia will
be excited. Tho crop will pay if well cared for.
Here in Milledgeville, near tho depot of the
MilledgcviUe and Eatonton Railway, a lot of
abont an acre, belonging to Mr. Kiel, has just
becncnt. Tho land has no very extraordinary
superiority of quality or cultivation; yet I
think tho yield cannot fall short of thirty bush
els. By careful and wise—I will not soy scien
tific, tor that, in its usual acceptation, is not
altcays wise—by carefal and wise cultivation the
product can be increased. Would it not “pay”
(as the phrase is) for each farmer to laeisK
manure on a fow acres annually for wheat, and
thus produce his own flour t The policy of

A demonstration by both theory and experience—
although full results are not yet always realized.
Your correspondent has been something of a
wanderer of late. He has had opportunity of
observing, within the past threo weeks, tho
crops along some of tho railways loading through
Northern Georgia, North Alabama, Middlo and
Western Tennessee, Mississippi and Eastern
Louisiana. The general promise is good, bnt
tardy. Tho lateness of the season and contin
gent tardiness in crops, are widespread and gen
eral. Yet tho planters aro not discouraged.
Tho culture appeared to bo good except in a few
fields of Northern Alabama and Louisiana, whore
our ‘man and brother’ seems to havo ‘fallen back 1
—a famous st rage tie measure in war—before bris
tling armies of weeds. We observed, a week
ago, in Middlo Tennessee, cotton and corn crops
almost or qnito as much advanced as wo saw in
Southern Mississippi and Louisiana. This was
tho result of general lateness of the season which
seems to havo assimilated tho climates of differ

Crops — A “Likely" Family of Negroes—
Freedmen— White Laborers.
Njsab Monti cello, June 9, 1869.
Editors Telegraph : Up here we are all doing
as they did before the flood—marrying and giv
ing in marriage. Four or more “cases” are
on hand, this month, in Monti oelio..
Cottofi is looking very well, with a fine stand
and first rate cultivation, np to thin time. Com
is flourishing, with a splendid dark-green color,
and prospects are bright.for a beautiful crop,
where there has been much of it planted. But
I am sorry to say, there has been a good deal
more cotton than com planted in old Jasper thin
year. ^ '
A good many of onr farmers have cut, or will
be cutting their wheat thin week. All appear
satisfied with the yield.
There is a negro woman now living in Jasper
county, and bom and raisep here, who has given
birth to thirty-three children, and twenty-seven
of them are now living. Her name is Eveline
Brown, and her present husband, Levi Brown,
is the father of thirty-one of these children.-
This old couple worked out in the fieldlast year
mil think they are doing the same thing thil
year. The freedmen generally, are working
well, bnt the white laborers are doing badly. A
great many of the latter are leaving their crops
just now—“can’t stand the sun,” I suppose.
