Editor! Telegraph .* In one of yonr dailies
of last week yon requested the planters to com-
mnnicato through yonr paper the present con.
dition and prospects of crops, and especially
what the fertilizers wero doing; the contrasted
appearance in size, etc. of the cotton plant,
when guano was and was not used, etc.
Oar crops in this section are, at this time,
promising. Com, though now much in want of
rain, is healthy, and if we get rain in a few
days, with a continuance of favorable seasons,
will make a supply for another year.
Cotton is generally doing well, stands good
and plant healthy, thought not perhaps as large
aa usual at this season. The relative size and
general appearance of cotton manured and not
manured is very different. I think, as a general
thing, the cotton plant on manured land is one-
fourth if not one-third larger than on t*nJ not
manured, and the stands in the same proportion
better; the result I suppose of the rigor impart
ed to the plant when very young and tender,
enabling it the better to resist the effects of the
cold nights and cold winds of the past month.
A gpeat variety of fertilizers have been used
among us. We have used principally “Zells’
Bswbone and Ammonlated Superphosphate."
It is so far doing well.
In reference to the com crop, I fear many who
admire and have adopted Mr. Dixon's theory
of shallow culture, regardless of quality of
land or character of seasons, will realize small
yields. Mr. Dickson's views may be, and doubt
less are, applicable to certain kinds of soil or
land, but, Messrs. Editors, their universal ap
plication will bo disastrous to the vital interests
or our country. No one system of culture can
be established aa best for all varieties of land,
and on some of our lands hereabouts, if we were
to rely entirely upon the “Dickson sweep” to cul
tivate our crops, a failure would be the result.
Finally, Messrs. Editors, what of the cotton
tax. I have heard, within a day or two, that
the Tax Asssessor for this sub-district, stated
here that it would be revived after July next;
that the tax had been suspended; not repealed,
and that he had with him bis “tricks" for tag
ging our cotton when made. We think this is a
mistako. W* read the Tzleobath and other pa
pers hers, and believe the tax repealed. Who is
right 7 Please give us your opinion.
W. A. M.
Always pleased to hear from the writer. We
think he is right with regard to Dickson'* method
of oom culture—don't believe it will do on day
■oils. In the matter of the cotton tax, we pub
lished the act repealing that ton some months
ago. Tho repeal is absolute, and why any of
the newspapers should persist In representing to
the contrary, we cannot understand. —Editor!.

xna AND AUGUSTA ROADS.
Pram tit Chronicle <t Stalls*!.]
Yesterday will be hailed aa Bed Letter day in
the history of Auguste, and will mark tho be
ginning of a new era in its prosperity.
Early in the morning there was a meeting of
all panics in interest to discuss propositions
made by Moses, Taylor A Co., of New York, to
equip and build a railroad from Port Boyd to
Augusta, to be| completed, if passible, within
twdve months, and to make a connecting line of
aea going steamers to New York, upon certain
stipulations. These propositions were accepted
under conditions which subsequently ham been
in great part complied with.
Wo regard the building of this road as now
beyond oontingeney.and firmly bcliov* that with
in a calender year tho steam horse will give us
a direct short connection (tho distance being
only one hundred and ten miles) with the best
harbor on the Southom Atlantic ooaat, and not
inferior to any of tho harbors of the North
American continent.
At tho call meeting of (he Stockholders of the
M. A A., Bailroad it was unanimously agreed
to push the road to completion. The propo
sition, which met with deeidodopposition on the

“I saw a little girl weep,” said the Moon;
she wept over the wickedness of the world.
She had been presented with the most mag
nificent doll. Oh, that was a doll, so fine and
delicate! it was not created for the sufferings
of this world. Bnt the brothers of the little
Riri— the great naughty boyB—had set tho doll
high upon a tall tree in the garden and run
away. The little girl could not reach the doll;
could not help her to descend, and, therefore,
she wept. To.be sure the doll wept too; she
stretched down her arms between the green
are the sufferings of the world of which Mum*.
has spoken so often. Alas! poor doll! it was
already growing dusk, and if now tho night
should fully set! Should she sit quiet, all
alone, tho whole night on the tree out of
No! The little girl could not bring herself to
that. “I will remain with thee,” said she;
though at that she felt by no means comfort
able. She imagined that she saw, quite A,«_
tinctly, the little goblins with their high point
ed caps couch in the bushes, and farther back
in the dusky walks danced tall spectres. They
came near and nearer; they extended their
hands towards f£e tree where the doll was sit
ting; they laughed mockingly, pointing at it
Alas! how lightened the little girl was. “But
if we have committed no sin,” thought she, “the
wicked cannot harm us. Did I commit a sin ?"
and she mused. “Oh, yes! I laughed at the
poor duck with the red rag on its leg; ithobhled
so ludicrously that I could not help laughing;
but it is asm to laugh st the animals. And
■he looked up to the dolL “Didst thou laugh
at the animals too,” asked she, and it looked as
though the doll shook her head.
“I looked down upon Tyrol.” said the Moore;
I let the dark pine-trees cast strong shadows
upon the rocks. I contemplated St. Christopher
carrying the infant Jesus on his shoulders, as
they are painted there upon the walls of the
houses, in ooHosaal size from the ground to the
roof. 8b Florian poured water over the burn
ing house and Christ hung bleeding from the
large cross on the road.
For the new generation these are all old pic
tures, butl saw bow they were erected—how one
followed another. On the sloping hill Ugh
above there hangs, like a swallow's nest, a soli
tary convent; two sisters stood tolling above in
the steeple; they were both young ; therefore
their glance flew across the mountains into the
world. A traveling coach passed below; the
poet-horn resounded, tho poor nuns fixed with
kindred thought* their glance upon the coach;
in the eye of the younger there glistened a tear.
And the horn resounded fainter and fainter—the
bells of the cloister drowned its dying tones.
tho Macon and Augusta Bailroad Company and,
these failing, the City Council of Augusta, the
right to redeem tho additional stock issue of five
hundred thousand dollars, within twelve months
after tho completion of tho work, at a slight ad-
tho feature. and, all parties being a unit as to the
vance. This struok at tho objectionable' part of
importance of the early completion of the enter
prise, tho proposition passed unanimously. We
will, therefore, have this road completed within
a year, opening up to us a short, friendly con
nection with Southwestern Georgia and done
connection with the Gulf of Mexico.
'IMtlnr: We have the responsible assurer
of Baltimore interest, now controlling a continu
ous line from Baltimore to Wilmington, and
the owners of the bonded debt of the Wilmi
ton and Manchester Boad, that the road will be
extended from Manchester to Augusta during
tho coming year.
On Saturday next tho trains of the Charlotte,
Columbia and Augusta Bailroad will enter the
dtv of Augusta for the first time.
By the first day of July, 1870, there will con
centrate in the city of Augusta, the Georgia
Bailroad, tho Augusta and Charleston, or South
Carolina Bailroad, and tho Augusta and Savan
nah Boad, all of which are now in operation.—
The Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Boad arc
within a mile of being completed. The Macon
and Augusta Boad more than half built; the
Port Boyal and Augusta, more than half tho
distance graded; ana the Wilmington and Au
gusts Bailroad.
The completion of these roads will give us
dose connection with the best harbors on the
South Atlantio coast—Norfolk, Wilmington,
Charleston, Port Boyal and Savannah.
Financial. .
Tho financial operations of the Savannah
Postoffice, for Wednesday, are thus reported by
tho Republican. We must say that Postoffice
is a liberal place in making change:
Finascieb Seei.ktHattt.—Seeley’s heart was
gladdened, and his tongue rendered speechless
yesterday, by the unexpected return of tho little
excess of two hundred dollars, paid to a mer
chant.
Thu Fejancikb Again is Trouble.—We learn
that the illustrious financier of tho Savannah
Postoffiee had hardly got through balancing ac
counts yesterday, after the return of the two
hundred, when matters were again thrown into
hocklety by the payment of ten dollars too much
on another Postoffice draft! These aecnnties
were in great demand on our streets yesterday,
and readily commanded a premium. Seeley is
doing wonders in bringing Uncle. Sam's credit
out of the slough of despond. It is said that
Secretary Bontwell, hearing of his exploits, tel
egraphed him yesterday to come on to Wash
ington and take charge of the Treasury Depart
ment ! Go, Seeley, we beseech thee.
How to Make Change. —A citizen applied
yesterday to that paragon of financiers, Deputy
Postmaster Seeley, for a postoffice draft for four
dollars and eighty cents, handing in a five dol
lar lull. Seeley added ten cents to the draft,
making four-ninety, and—handed the customer
back fife deHart and ten cent! at hit change!
Hear, what the Moon narrated several yean
ago—it was bars in Copenhagon—I looked
through the windows of a scanty room. The
father and mother dept, but tho little son did
not deep. I saw the bed-curtains of flowered
calioo move and the child peep forth. At first
I thought he looked at the large house dock,
which was too beautifully painted, red and
green; on the top there sat a cuckoo, below
there hung the heavy leaden weights and the
pendulum with the brass disk brightly polished,
went to and fro, tick-tack; but not the dock did
he look at—no, it waa the spinning wheel of his
mother, that stood just beneath the dock. That
waa the boy’s dearest piece of all; ho was not
allowed to touch it or Mb fingers were knocked.
Wholo hours through, when the mother was
■pinning, he could nt quietly by U, and, con
templating tho rattling spool and the turning
whed, ho had peculiar thoughts.
Alas, if he were only snowed to turn the
spinning-wheel. The father and mother slept,
he looked at them, he looked at the spinning-
wheel ; and soon after a little naked foot peeped
out of the bed, and then still another, and then
two little legs. There he stood. He looked
once more behind, to see if father and mother
were still sleeping; yes, they slept, and now he
stole softly, quite softly, in his little short shirt
to the spinning-wheel and began to spin. The
line flew off the wheel, (he whed ran quicker
still. I kissed his fair hair and his bluo eyes;
it was a lovely picture. At this moment the
mother awoke, the curtain moved, aim looked
forth and thought she saw a gobHn or another
little spectre. In the name of Jesus! she ex-
claimed, pushing her husband in the side. He
opened his eyes, rubbed them with his hands
and glanced at the little brisk fellow. “To bo
sura, that is Bertel!” ho exclaimed. And my
eye left the scanty room, fori must see so much.
In the same moment I looked into the halls of
the Vaticah/wnere the rharble gods are stand
ing. I streamed upon the Laocoon group; the
stone seemed to sigh; I pressed a silent kiss
upon the breasts of the Noses, it looked to me
as if they heaved. Bat my beams dwelt the
longest on the group of tho Nile, on the Colossal
God. Leaning against the Sphinx ho lies thore,
thoughtful and dreaming, os though ho thought
of the fleeting centuries; the little cupids are
playing with the crocodiles.
In tho comu-copia there sat with crossed arms
a qniet little enpid, contemplating the huge,
earnest river-god, a faithful image of the little
boy at the spinning-wheel. The features were
quite the same. Lifelike and charming stood
here the little marble statue, and yet the wheel
of the year has turned round more than a thou
sand times since it was shaped out of the stone.
As often as the boy in tho scanty room has turn
ed tho spinning-wheel, the large wheel has rat
tled, before the age could produce once more
marble gods like these.
“Sinoe then years have passed,” continued
the Moon. “Yesterday I looked down upon a
creek on the eastern shore of Zealand; there
are magnificent forests and high hills;. there is
an old kni ght's manor, with red walls ; in the
ditches swim fishes; behind them, between or
chards, a little town with a church is to be seen.
Many boats, all with torches, are gliding across
the calm surface ; not for the eel-fishing were
the fires lighted—no, everything was festival.
The music resounded: a song was sung; in
one of the boats stood upright he, to whom they
rendered homage; a tall, powerful man,
wrapped in a cloak; he had blue eyes, and
long, white hair; I recognized him, and thought
of the Vatican with the group of the Nile, and
all marble gods. I thought of tho scanty room
where little Bertel, with his short shirt, sat at
the spinning-wheel. The wheel of the time
v... turned; new gods have risen from the
