A Shower of Snake*.
The Illinois State Register says that in a recent
severe rain, hail and wind storm at Taylorsville,
in that State, an immense number of nonde
script snakes fell He says:
On Saturday and Sunday last, every ditefi,
brook, and pool on the prairie north of Taylors
ville was alive with nondescript creatures,
which have been described to ns as being from
one and a half to two feet long, and of three-
fourths of an inch to an inch in diameter. This
diameter is very slightly lessened at the head
and tail. The tail is flat, like that of an eel,
but has no candal fins, indeed, there are no fins
at all. The head is in shape of an eel, bnt the
mouth is that of a sucker. The eyes are small,
and the ears are simply orifices. Immediately
behind the head, on each side, is a flipper, like
that of a turtle, sav three-fourths of an inch to
an inch in length, including the limb, which has
a perfectly developed joint. In color, these
snakes, or whatever they are, are of a dark hue.
The number of these creatures is beyond all
estimate. They swim in every branch and pud
dle of water. Their mode of progression in ad
dition to the nndolstory motion of a snake in
the water, is by the nxo of the flipper described
above, and they swim entirely under the water
or with tho head and a few inches of tho body
above the surface, thus indicating that tho flip
pers are not aljsolutely essential to motion. They
. are perfectly harmless. Boys and men take
them from the pools in hundreds, and they are
bronght to town for inspection.
We are willing to admit that our knowledge
of ichthyology is not sufficient to determine
what they are. Eels have teeth, are carniver-
ens, and somo species are very voracious and
belligerent. These creatures are of tho genua
eveloptenis, or suckers, having no teeth, and
are evidently unprepared for attack, and except
by flight, are defenceless. Furthermore they
havo no fins, and their flippers are only adjunct,
and not tho principal means of progrsselon.—
They aro not serpents, as they want fr
cither hooded or naked, which invariably
tinguish the order of ophidians.
Wo will not worry our readers with any spec
ulations on a subject confessedly beyond our
knowledge. We aro promised some specimens,
which will bo submitted to naturalists of ac
knowledged ability, whose opinions wo shall lay
liefore tho public.
Gam and xim Ltaoux.—The Charleston
Courier illustrates the influence of the Union
League in that city as follows
Messrs. Black A Johnson, somo time sinoe,
advertised for two hundred hands to work on
tho Brunswick Railroad. Inducements were
offered that were amply sufficient to warrant an
immediate supply of labor, but notwithstanding
that, over three hundred idle negroes may bo
seen daily, loafing around and in the Court
house. Only twelve men responded to the call.
The reluctance seems to spring from the absurd
rumor that was circulated, to the effect that the
advertisement was designed aa a moans of car-
rying off colored men, and so breaking up the
Union League in the city. Alas, poor Coffee.
A Patient Devotee.—Deacon B., of Ohio, a
very pious man, was noted for his long prayers,
especially in his family. One Monday morning
the Deacon and his wife were alone, and, as waa
his custom, after breakfast a prayer was offered.
There being an unusual amount of work that day,
the Deacon s prayer was short, and seizing his
hat and milk pail, ho started for tho bam. His
wife, bciDg deaf, did not notice his absence, but
supposed him to be still engaged in prayer. On
his return from milking, ho was surprised to find
hor still kneeling. He stepped up to her and
shouted “Amen, when she immediately arose
and went about her work as if nothing had hap
pened.
ScTanrs Count upon Negbo Eugimlitt.—
Tho Atlanta Constitution of Friday says:
Tho argument in this case was concluded this
morning by ex-Govemor James Johnson. So
groat has been tho interest taken in this matter
that the Court moved its session to the Senate)
chamber to accommodate the largo crowd that
wished to hoar the case argaod.
There is a rumor floating around, that Judge
Brown will go back on his Marietta speech, for
tho reason that he discussed tho point then sole
ly with reference to tho Constitution, and now
ho looks at it from the Constitution and Code
blended. Of course this is all speculation.
Some men were exploring a cave in an Indian
mound near Davenport, Iowa, a few days ago,
and had secured several stone hatchets and other
relics when they felt a movement of earth under
foot and clamored hastily out They had hard
ly reached the entrance when the ground they
had been standing on within gave way, a large
gap appeared and a moss of earth was heard to
strike a pool of water, an indefinite distance be
low, with a heavy splash.
Great Haul or Blue Fisa.—Fire Island Bay
swarms with bluo fish just now. Never in the
memory of the oldest fishermen, have such
shoals of fish been seen. On Saturday, at the
lowest estimate, four to fivo tons of blue fish
were landed on Fire Island beach.—i\T. 3k Com.

Scrofulous poison is one of the most dcstructlvo

clcs may be suddenly deposited in tho lungs or
heart, or tumors formed In tho liver. These facts
make the occasional nse of the Sarsaparilla as a
preventive, advisable.
It Is a mistake to suppose that so long as no erup
tions or humors appear, them must be no scrofulous
taint. These forms of derangement may never
occur, and yet the vital forces of the body be so re*
dueed by its subtle agency, as materially to impair
the health and shorten the duration of hfe. Il ls a
common error, also, that scrofula Is strictly heredi
tary. It docs, Indeed, descend from parent to child,
but is also engendered in persons bom of pans
blood. Low living, indigestion, foal air, licentious
‘ . .. a, rad the depressing vices gen-
eakly constitutions, where not
, j constant and judicious care,
are peculiarly liable to it. Yet tho robust, also,
whose turbid blood swells the veins with an appar
ently exuberant vitality, are often contaminated,
and on the road to its consequences. Indeed, no
class or condition can depend on immunity from
it, nor feel insensible to the importance of an effec
tual remedy.
In St. Anthony’s Fire, Bose or. Erysipelas,

the scrofulous infection, tho Sarsetpar

» — systems, tho
Sarsaparilla, through its purifying power, re
moves tho cause of the disorder and produces its ton-
idling cores. •
The sarsaparilla root of the tropics docs not by
itself achieve these results. It Is aided by theex-
tracts combined with it, of still greater power. So
potent is this union of healing virtues, Syphilis or
Venereal and Mercurial Diseases arc cured by

obstinate maladies by arnr medicine. Xeucorrheea

Diseases m general, are commonly soon relieved
and ultimately cured by the invigorating and puri
fying effect or our Sarsaparilla. Shenmatism
and 6out, often dependenton tho accumulations of
extraneous matters in tho blood, have their remedy
also in this medicine. For Liver Complaints,
torpidity, inflammation, alicess, etc., caused by
rankling poisdns in. the blood, we unhesitatingly
recommend the Sarsaparilla, . , , r -
This medicine restores health and vigor where HO
specific disease can be distinguished. Its restora
tive power is soon felt by those who are Languid,
Listless, Despondent, Sleepless, and filled with
Xervous Apprehensions or Fears, or who are
troubled with any other ot those affections "

General Debility, have written ns of tho
nil vigor imparted to their nervous system, which
seemed buoyant with that proliflo life they thongbt
had departed on the advanceof age. Others, whose
fountains of life were always sterile, acknowledge
their obligations to it for an obvious change.
