Perhaps no situation in life could afford great-
I er intellectual enjoyment than that of being a
[ mltivator of the noil, in some life-giving, health-
i expiring mountain region, where, long before
the dawn, wa might, from some commanding
; elevation, watch for the glorions coming of the
j god of day.
Gomo with me, then, ye pallid denizens of a
! great city’s stifling atmoxphrre; come, and in
imagination stand upon the summit of that his-
1 torio mount, to which we havo alluded; thero
I let ns waft until night's starry lamps begin to
I grow dim and finally disappear in the dark-blue
vault above ns. Now look far off toward the
I eastern boundary; see how strange, how faint,
I bow spectral is that feeble light which first her-
[ aids the coming dawn; yet it is growing bright-
, and brighter each moment, until now it
<mi as if ten thousand golden lances were be-
[ ing thrown from the hands of some invisible
host, far above the rim of the horizon. AU na
ture around ns sleeps! albeit that sublime mir-
[ iicle, wrought by the fingers of a God, is going
I on. The clonda that float serenely in that quar-
I tor of the heavens, begin to glow with alternate
crimson and gold. The mountain peaks that
stand like the outposts of creation, seeming like
mighty human giants with their shining helmets
-these are the find earthly objects to catch
I the effulgent raya. Anon the fiery orb himself
emerges into full view, and then every dew-
washed flower, jeweled tree, wide-spreading
plain and sparkling river, start from the cold,
grey mist and shadow, breaking upon the enrap
tured vision, a boundless panorama bathed in
| glorious, golden light! ,
We have tried some times, but vainly, to
[ imagine what must have been the emotions of
joy and wonder that startled the souls of our
primeval paronta, even amid all the splendors
of Eden, when they beheld for tho first timo
' that grandest cartoon of creation, the rising sun
^pointed by the pencil of the Divino Master
upon the glowing canvas of the East! Wo
marvel not when wo call to mind the solemn
adoration of the firo worshippers, or of those
who erected mighty temples, upon whoso al
tars they might offer sacrifleee to the great cen
tral orb of light and life whioh was to them in
verity, the bright god of their idolatry I And
yet the majesty and boautyof that ann-riae,
beheld from the bold mountain's brow, was not
the^ theme for the only thoughts that were
passing through the mind in that hour of inspi
ration and joy. We thought how consistent,
how sublime, was every object in nature, as
they presented themselves to us, each in their
particular spheres.' The mighty star that
swings in its cycle of a thousand yean around
tho great solar fountain of light, is not any
more perfect, is not any more beautiful or
wonderful to tho thoughtful mind, than is the
' fire fly, that oarries beneath its delicate
wiug its tiny lamp, becoming (so to speak) its
own torch bearer to death and decay! The
frail, but exquisite flower, on the rugged moun
tain aide, unfolding its tender petals, and lifting
its dainty little cup for the life-giving dew drops
of the fresh, young morning, although aoeming-
ly so insignificant in itself, domands my sym
pathy, my attention, jngt as mnoh as did the
bright bow of promise, later in the day, flinging
out ita radiant banner of vermillion and purple,
of green and gold, and spanning the dark brow
of the receding storm. What then, dear reader,
is the language these bright jewels of creation
speak ? the impressive language they should
teach tu ? Ah! from them we may learn order,
system and obedience; from them we may learn
onr own sad deviations from the plain path of-
duty, and our great responsibility to that Being,
whose all-seeing eye notes even tho fall of a
sparrow.
Oh! let ua, then, give more of onr attention
' to a contemplation and love of the beautiful,
the true and the good; for in the midst of such
devotion, surrounded by such scenes and sacred
influences, wo shall forget for tho timo being
that the counting room is onr church, the ledger
onr Bible, and gold onr god!

We regret to see so much unnecessary bitter-

leading daily papers have absolutely defiled
themselves by descending to harmless invectino

they seek to promote. If tho conduct of Joe IFEYER CTJUDE,

Prestos, Webster Co., Ga., June 19, 18C9.
Editors Telegraph : Gests—Since my oom
in uni cation of the 27th of May, we have been
blessed with oopious showers, and our crops
have assumed quite a different aspect, particu
larly on the red lands. They are now growing one
finely, where they have been worked out in
time ; but I am sorry to inform yon that three-
fourths of tho planters of this county are badly
in grass. Our gray lands aro not doing well,
the cold weather so chilled them that it will be
impassible for them to recover in time to make
anything like an average yield.
What little wheat that was planted has been
garnered and proved a failure—from one and a
Half to two bushels per acre have been all that
was gathered.
Tho warm weather is having a bad effect up
on our freedmen ; they seem to be very partial
to dark places where tho sun don’t shine.
Permit me to say a few words about your city,
and a few of its business men. On my last visit
I stopped with mine host, the Browns, at the
Brown House, and found them, as usual, ever
ready to render their guest nil assistance that will
render them comfortable and at home. Their
table is furnished with every luxury the country
affords, with polite and attentive servants.
Now, Messrs. Editors, do not construe the
above in disparagement of the claims of other
hotels in your city, as I can speak from my own
experience, as it has been my good fortune to
stop, in my frequent visits to your city, with
those courteous and poll to gentlemen Collier dr
Boys at the Lanier House, also with the Bying-
ton Brothers, and find them »U high-toned gen
tlemen. And I believe that I can say, without
fear?! contradiction, that Macon cannot be ex
celled in hotels (I mean first-class) by any city
North or South. A word now, relative to your
merchants : I find J. B. Ross A Son, Wholesale
Diy Goods * Grocers, clever, practical business
men, with heavy stocks, and with attentive and
accommodating clerks who take pleasure in show
ing their ample stock. The same can be said of
B. A. Wise, the great Crockery, Glass and Hard
ware ; also, Singleton, Hunt A Co., where
you can get shoes and hats of any shape and
style you may want, at fair prices. S. Waxal-
baum A Brother keep a large stock of staple and
Brown and Kent McCay has not already sunk
them to the lowest depths of popular perdition
in Georgia, violent phillipics by the press will
fail to send them there. The vocabulary of
epithets has already been exhausted on them,
and a rehash of the efforts terconsign them to
infamy can never reach far enough down tho
track they took to do them harm. There is not
a respectable or honest man or woman in Geor
gia, who does not recognize their complete
abasement and irrevocable abandoment of truth,
honor, and decency. If aught could bo gained
by again holding them np to the gaze and scorn
of mankind, we might be induced to dip our
pen in gaul and search a Thesaurus for words
out of which to coin some blistering curses,- but
the labor is not worth the candle—it would be
a work of supererogation, and wo decline to en
ter upon it.
Nor do we approve the hurtful threats in
dulged in by some of our contemporaries.—
Whatever may be our future policy, this is not
the time to foreshadow it; and tho editor who,
at this critical juncture of onr affairs, proclaims
continued hostility on tho adjudicated issues,
and a latent purpose to reopen and reverse
them, is as much a public enemy as the vile in
struments who are the authors of our humilia
tion.
A frank avowal that we accept the situation,
and will stand by the laws in good faith, is due
to our own good sense; and the perils that
environ ns admonish ns that there is wisdom in
the policy; but if to such a pledge we couple a
declaration or threat that we intend to violate it
and reverse the order of things as soon as we
ore permitted to manage onr own affairs, we
shall but offer a premium for farther aggress
ions, and invite additional oppressive legisla
tion. * A
Of coarse we all hope for a better day, and
none of us expect the present state of things to
last always; bnt how the change is to be brought
about, and when, for onr amelioration, are
qnestions for tho future, and to the softening
infinaneea of time, with its marring develop
ment of truth, wo must now look far the final
solution of onr difficulties.
Then, a truce, say we; and a calm, combined,
determined effort to oonvert the evils that aro
upon ns to the good of tho State and all of her
people. The negro ia not to blame for having
the misfortune thrust upon him, and we should
not visit him with nnkindness on account of the
anomalous position of affairs evolved from the
mad crucible of radical fanaticism. Rather let
ua scrupulously observe a course of kindness,
generosity and justice towards him, and culti
vate relations that will make him feel and know,
that we are his friends, and that his highest in
terests and very existence are involved in onr
destiny. This course will insure his friendship
and fidelity in domestic relations, and his willing
aid in promoting the general interests and poli
tical economy of tho State.
. Negro Eligibility.
Prom ike Central Ororyian.]
The Supreme Court of Georgia has decided
this vexed question at last, and says the negro
■ eligible to office. Judge Warner, the noble
old Roman, stands alone in opposition to it.—
The people were prepared for such a decision
from Judge McCay, but not from Jndge Brown.
He first sprang the question at Marietta, months
ago, and to a great extent is responsible for its
agitation. But times change and men change
Uriththcm. Judge Brown, perhaps, then saw
I through a glass darkly.” Tho fourteenth
amendment enabled him to see more clearly. H
Bnt it is useless to discuss tho question fnr-J
thcr. The deed is done. It has cast a gloom
over the 8tate. The dread consequence of ele
vating viee and ignoranoe is upon us. Tho end
no man can foresee. The eye of tho country
was fixed upon Georgia, and hope was buoyant
that she would form a nucleus around which
could gather and harmonize tho disjointed in
terests Of our common country. But she too is
driven from her moorings and all is lost No
longer can we hold up tho beacon light and cry
| “look unto na.” Clothed in sackcffith and ashes,
I Georgia strikes “Wisdom” from her motto, and
mourns her greatness gone.
And who did iff “Tell it not in Gath, pub
lish it not in the streets of Asealon,” but it was
Iho whom she had nurtured into life!
But “let ushave peace.” No good canbo ac-
I impliahed by stiring up the public mind against
[the Supreme Court “Obey tho powers that
be,” is tho scripture injunction. We have op
posed, aa Georgians, tho elovation of the negro
to place and power, for tho common weal. He
ia not prepared for it intellectually or otherwise.
The intelligent, honest freedman knows this to
bo true. He is but a child—an infant—in polit
ical matters, too easily led astray by bad men tol
occupy a responsible position.
Tho enemies to the peace of tho
that our opposition to negro office I ■
[basedupon ahatred toward the race. Why should
we hate them? They nursed ns in infancy,
played with ns in. childhood, partook of onr
youthful sports and labored with and for us in
riper years. Hate them! why should"*-® ? Bad
men have told them so and made many of them
believe that wo did, and wonld put them back
in slavery if we could. A malicious falsehood
They pay us better as hired servants than as
slaves. No clothing to buy now, no doctor s bill
to pay, no thousand dollars out of pocket when
one dies. It hurt ns much at first, and made
many of ns very poor, to have them taken from
ns; bnt now we see it was “a blessing in dis
guise.” A gentleman who owned three hundred,
told ns only last week, that he could not be in
duced to take them back as slaves.
But this is wandering far from tho starting
point. We look upon the decision of the Court
as most importune just now, but hope for the
best. i i * . - • -

A certain class of editors in Georgia are aili-
gently engaged in discussing toe proportion,
whether the late decision of the Supreme Corn,
entitles the negroes, who were expelled, to re
sume their seats in the Legislature.
We are sorry the question has been sprung,
and regret that leading jonmals have stooped
to discuss it. Especially do we commiserate
those who have undertaken the teak of signing
the negative. Sophistry and quibbling will not
