The State Fair.—Colonel D. W. Lewi* taring
retained from Washington, a meeting of the com-
mittee appointed to locate the grounds for bolding
the State Fair, in November, met veeterday after
noon for consultation and to hear what Col. Lewis
might hare to say in regard to the matter.
He stated that hi* mission to Washington was
entirely successful, and that he had returned with
an order from the Secretary of War, upon Colonel
Lewis, of the Freedman's Bureau, to turn over to
the State Agricultural Society the armory bnildings
held by the Bureau in this city. Col. Lewis farther
stated that he had scarcely a doubt that the Gov
ernment would finally donate the property to the
State for agricultural purposes and the holding of
State Fairs.
We understand that the work of potting the
armory bondings and groonds in order and proper
condition for the Fair, in November, will be imme
diately entered npon by the committee of arrange
ments, and when completed there win be nothing
of the sort, in the country, that will surpass them
inconvenience, elegance and amplitude.

WasstsoTox, June 24.—Among the President's
appointment to West Point, promulgated today, is
a son of Col. Crane, of Ohio, recently killed at Jack-
son, Miss.
Gen. Grant’s present intention is rery reliably
stated to be to issue an election proclamation about
the 10th of July for Mississippi, to be held about
the 15th of September, and for Texas about the 1st
of October.
Reynolds telegraphs Gen. Sherman that Texas is
quiet and ready for a fair election.

Gen. Sherman has gone to St- Louis.
Gen. James A. Elton acts Quartermaster General
during Meig'a absence.
It is stated that Senator Fenton secured But
terfield's appointment, Tice Van Dyke, and that
BontweH is not entirely satisfied.
Quartermaster Gen. Mtig’s father is dead.
Three daughters of Bev. D. B. Nichols were ap
proaching the city to school to-day, and a negro
-seized the eldest, a girl of seventeen, and ravished
her. He escaped, notwithstanding the screams of
her Bisters—younger girls of thirteen and fifteen-
in the meantime beating the brute with sticks and
stones. The giris were white pupils of the Howard
University. Their father was formerly well known
as the Superintendent of the Contraband Camp, on
the comer of Twelfth and Ninth streets.
All the New York papers have accounts of the
escape of CoL Ryan, with four hundred men, to
Jersey City. The Marshal, with a revenue cutter,
followed, but the numbers of the Cabana deterred
arrests. Marshal Jowney, CoL Byan'a custodian,
was found gagged.
Leonard Hnyck, formerly president of the de
funct merchants' national tanks, recently sentenced
to the penitentiary, was before tlio court to-day, on
a motion for a new trial, when all indictments were
dismissed, and Huyck discharged.
The Department has advices from McMahon to
April 21st. He was well. His relations with Lopez
are friendly. Earlier communication was prevented
by the allies.
From Virginia.
Ricbxoxd, Jane 24.—A fight occurred at the reg
istration office in a lower ward this afternoon, ih
which Joseph Kelly, a prominent Conservative of
the ward and a politician, was mortally wounded
and two policemen shot. Kelly was remonstrating
against the arrest of a man whom the police tad
taken, when Capt. Callahan, of the police, and sev
eral privates took hold of him. Callahan, wbo had
had a personal feud with Kelly, shot him through
the body. Two policemen were slightly wounded—
one by Kelly, and the other by a random shot from
Callahan. Callahan was arrested and bailed to ap
pear.
The registration here dosed to-day—the whites
having overcome the black majority and gotten a
white majority of three hundred.
From Mississippi.
Jackson, June 24.—The Conservative Republican
Convention, which adjourned last night, organized
a National Union Republican party of Missisaippi,
and passed resolutions looking to an early restora
tion of the State government in strict accordance
with the reconstruction laws; setting forth the re
peated failures of all former and existing organiza
tions to restore the State and meet the requirements
of the Republican spirit of our institutions, by in
sisting on measures of proscription far exceeding
the provisions of the Constitution of the United
States, and reconstruction acts that have rendered
them unworthy of the respect and confidence of the
▼otere of Mississippi; favoring the proposed 15th
amendment; deprecating the attempt to im
pose greater restrictions than those imposed by
Congress; unwavering support of Gen. Grant;
favoring universal suffrage and universal amnesty,
on the reconstruction of the State ; Federal rela
tion pledged to urge Congress to the removal of
political disabilities incurred by participation in the
rebellion; Central Executive Committee authorized
to issue an address to the people and call a State
Convention to nominate State officers whenever
expedient. Entire liarmony prevailed.
-The Verger trial has not dosed. Further testi
mony is designed to establish the insanity of the
accused.

GENERAL DEBILITY IS NATURE’S APPEAL
FOB HELP.
Thousands of persons without an; specific ail
ment, are the victims of languor and lassitude. The
nntkinking are apt to confound this spedes of iner-
tion with laziness; whereas, it usually arises from
a want of organic energy, for which the subjects of
it are no more responsible than the near-sighted are
for tbeir defective vision. Such persons, although
they may be free from pain, are aa truly invalids,
and aa ranch in need of medical aid, as if they were
tormented with the pangs of acute disease. They
require a tonic and alterative, that will rouse
and regulate their torpid organizations. In cases
of this kind HOSTETTERS STOMACH BITTERS
produce an immediate and moat favorable effect.
The debilitated and desponding valetudinarian, wbo
feels aa if he were hut half alive; wbo shuns com
pany, and has no relish either for business or pleas
ure, is metamorphosed, by a brief course of this
most potent vegetable tnvigorant, into quite a dif
ferent being. Tbe change effected by the BITTERS,
in bis bodily and mental condition, ia a surprise to
himself and to his friends. He mopes no longer;
the active principle of life, which seemed to have
died oat of him, is re-awakened, and he feels like
a new man. Remembering that debility la not only
an infliction itself, but an invitation to disease, no
time ahould be lost in recruiting the broken-down
system with this chotoeat and moat potent of all
tonics and nervinea.
