The Covington Enterprise publishes the fol
lowing extract from a late California letters
CoL Lam Jr, (one of onr Georgia emigrants,)
lives near the Lake. He spent a night with us
recently, and a most gentlemanly interesting
man we found him to be. His account of that
region confirms the many glowing reports which
I have beard through other channels. He gave
ns a very cordial invitation to make a visit next
summer. Ho is a lawyer of high reputation,
and candidate for the Jndgeship of this circuit.
His father was a brother of Peter Lamar. I
have rarely met a 'more intelligent, polished
Christian gentleman.

poor boy. He told me the other day, that his
crop of wheat last year and the year before was
forty thousand bushels (more or less not to be
exact,) each year. Dr. Frank Thomas and I
were up st Bostick's ranch last /ear, and saw
his crop just about the time of harvest. I never
saw such a beautiful sight in the shape of a
wheat field. Just think of afield of .900 acres,
that yielded on the average over A5 bushels per
sere—and all as level as a garden—and the
wheat about equally good from one end to the
other. This year, he says, his prospect is bet
ter than it has ever been.
Five or six hands would require abont two
months of working weather to put in this wheat
crop—and then the harvesting and threshing
Would oost him about four dollars per acre, pro
vided be hired all the teams, machinery and
hands to do the work.
I have a neighbor named Flournoy, an emi
grant from Virginia. He told me a few days
ago, that year before last he pat in only four
months labor for one hand in ploughing season
and that he raised on that place ten thousand
bnahels of wheat. He has another ranch on
