CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE IN FAVOR OF HOH-
TETTER’S STOMACH BITTERS.
W. H.. Reese, a leading druggist in Monttcelkh
III., in a letter of June 6,18G8, writes to this effect:
“Having sold Hoetetter’s Bitters four years, I can
not Int speak of the article as being tlie beet tonic
and appetizer extant During tho aguo season of
18G5-6, I could not keep a sufficient stock on band to
supply my customers. In fact, your Bitten was as
staple as quinine. I leam that physicians prescribe
it all over tbo western country. Indoed, a great
many families think they are not safe withont your
invaluable tonic.”
J. K. Witherspoon, Esq., a magistrate of Kershaw
county, b. C., states, under date of April IS, 1988,
tliat bo haa used tho Bitters constantly in libs own
family for tbo previous two Jean. He first tried
tho preparation when suffering from exhaustion pro
duced by a severe attack of fever. Before the first
bottle was finished be experienced a remarkable
change for the better. He had tried brandy at tho
ontset, but found that did him more harm than
good. In one month from the time bo commenced
using the Bitters, his health, strength and appetite
were restored. He had recommended the article to
others in liko circumstances, and never known it to
fail, and bad found it a perfect specific for chills and
Fever.
Mr. Samuel Young, of Clarion, Fa.,.under date of
April 6,1868, certifies that he was completely cured
of “onbof the most distressing attacks of dyspepsia
that ever afflicted any mortal,'’ by three bottles of
tho Bitten, after “various other remedies bad
proved powerless.” Restored to perfect health, he
thanks "that excellent preparation for the result.”
Dr. G. M. Spencer, of Brush Crook, Perry county,
Ala., writing thence Feb. 8, 1868, says: “I have
nsod your Stomach Bitten for several years In my
practice, and find them superior to moat of the Bit
ten now prescribed by the profession generally.”

CITY AFFAIRS.
WEDNESDAY MORNING, JULY 14, I860.
CoxxzxczxEjrr—Fmsr Dai.—Like the Daily
Txxzoxxpn, for somo months past, the exercises at
tho Wesleyan Female Collego yesterday, contained
a very large amonnt of original reading matter.
Bat, whilst somo of the matter in the Teucgbai-h is
good, and some, again, only the best wo can do with
tho enbjcct in band, all tho young ladies yesterday
bad something good, fresh and interesting. Nor
does tho simile (tho charming young ladies will par
don it) stop here. Whilst they bad the sweetest
music to set forth their beautiful and excellently
prepared productions, in addition to tbo personal
charms of woman and tho rich melody of her voice,
we have no backers, and tbo only music wo know
anything about is that which we are occasionally
forced to face for saying something about some
body that is objected to. But to tbs exercises:
Wo can only allude to them in general terms, and
wo mean it when wo say that wo never beard more
creditable compositions from any class—male or fe
male—than those wo heard from the senior class
yesterday in tbo College Chapel. One or two of the
young ladies wore frequently interrupted by the
most vociferous applause, and had to wait upon tho
audience for silence before proceeding. Miss Lntie
Y. Londie, of Newnan, Ga., read a composition on
advertisements which was capital. Of course we
think so, because in the selection of her subject she
struck a chord of tho harp upon which we play. Ad
vertisements are good things for newspapers, and
Miss Lundio made a good thing of it in her compo
sition. Wogive the programme:

ney, came off last night, in the College Chapel, be
fore a Terr Urge audience. It b generally conceded
by those who were present, to have been the most
brilliant affair of the kind ever given in the Chapel.
The programme, aa given below, was well selected,
and the performers produced it in a most charming
and effective manner. One rarely listens to a sweet
er voice than that of Mbs Fannie Foote, nor do we
often bear more accomplished performers on the
piano than Mfte Alice Baxter or Mbs Boea Gresham.
Indeed, every piece of the evening was finely ren
dered, and we mean no invidious distinction by men
tioning the names of a few. of the young ladies and
not mentioning all, for all did well.

Mayor’s Co cut.—From the largo crowd and the

have fairly inferred that hb Honor was opposed to
the adjournment of the Superior Court, and that
he was running it in conjunction with hb own,
whilst tho young and festive Bar of Macon was in
attendance on tho interesting cxercbes at the
College. But bo thb as it may, lib Honor had a
good attendance and a lively docket, as follows:
There were no lees than five cases of drunk and
disorderly conduct, four of which were kindly and
generously dismissed, but tho fifth, in default of
paying a $10 fine, went to tho Gnard-lionse ten
days. -
Two negro women were then brought up for fight
ing. After sifting the testimony, the culpable party
was found and fined $5, which she paid and sailed
ont like a sloop in a fair breeze.
An aggravated case of disorderly conduct wss
then investigated. The result was that tho offender
had to shell ont $25 or go to jaiL Ho paidhb

Sontlicru Kailrond — Encouragement
to Immigration.
From the Schenectady New York Daily Union,
Tho New York Herald speaks as follows of tho
Southern Railroad consolidation effected for the
purpose of affording better facilities far travel
and observation to those desiring to emigrate to
tho South.
The happiest results have thus for followed
the unanimous adoption, at a convention of
Son them railways, held last January in Atlanta,
Georgia, of a resolution, offered by Colonel E.
Halbert, superintendent of the Western and At-
lantic Railway, that excursion certificates should
be issued at a reduced rate to parties visiting
the South for the pnrpose of personal observa
tion with a view to personal settlement or invest
ment Twenty-seven railways have already
entered into this arrangement, and others are
preparing to enter into IL. Tho holder of the
certificate—which is not sold, bat is issued to
any one who, in good faith, proposes to travel
South to invest or to settle—b entitled to \ re
duction of the faro to two cents per mile until
July 1, 18C9. A large nnmberof hotels have
agreed to deduct one-third from their usual
rates for the same time. For actual settlers the.
fare has been reduced to one cent per mile per
head for all ages, allowing eighty pounds of bsg-
r head. There has recently been such
sd and steady increase of southward trav
el over tho railroads which have agreed to thb
wise system for tho encouragement of immigra
tion from the Northern States and from Europe,
and the prospective advantages which, not only
tho South, but tho railways themselves, will
reap from it, aro so great as to lead us to hopo
that tho experiment will be continued beyond
tho 1st of Jnly. Daring tho heated term of
summer the travel must slacken somewhat, bnt
it will revive and rapidly increase during the
ensuing fall and winter if the same system be
mtMiimA
The judicious redaction of fares on (he South
ern railways must directly promote and facili
tate Northern and foreign immigration to the
Sonth. Immigrants, with their capital of money
and skilled labor, can nowhere find more de
sirable homes or more profitable retains than
in the vast territory embraced between the Po
tomac, Ohio and Mississippi rivers and the At
lantic Ocean and Golf of Mexico. Within these
boundaries there is such a diversity of surface,
soil and climate that most of tho fruit and all
the grains—in some localities two crops of cer
tain verities of com and fruits annually—can be
successfully and profitably cultivated. The cen
tral and most elevated region, including portions
of Virginia, North and South Carolina, Tennes
see, Georgia and Alabama, in particular, for
salubrity of climate, grandeur of scenery and
abundance and purity of water cannot be ex
celled.
The New York agency of tho consolidated
railroads, under the able supervision of Mr. J.
B. Yates is located at 229 Broadway. Persons
desirous of availing themselves of the extraordi
nary facilities thus offered would do well to
make personal inquiries at headquarters.
