‘-Tho Margravate of Axilla” — A New
Chapter In Georgia History.
From lie Savannah BepnlHean.
It in somewhat strange that, while onr histo
rians have mined and deltfed among the musty
tomes of the post in search of everything bear
ing upon the early history of the State of Geor
gia, a most interesting and valnable document,
published no farther back than 1836, and con
taining a legal grant of all the land lying be
tween the Savannah and Altamaha rivers, and in
ward to the Appalachian chain of mountains, has
been entirely overlooked. Yet, so it is, and
McCall, Stevens and their colaborers, in their
laborious roaches, have missed a paper, that
each would have regarded as a prize.
Tho document referred to is a grant from tho
Palatine and Lords Proprietors of the Province
of Carolina to Sir Robert Montgomery, Baronet,
his heirs and assigns forever, of the territory
described above, as a distinct Province, nnder
the name and style of “The Margravate of
Azilia.” How many citizens of Georgia know
that their State ever boasted of this besntfol
name—“Azilia?" Tho document referred to
is copied verbatim below, and may be found in
a volume entitled “Tracts and other Papers, re
lating principally to the Origin, Settlement, and
Progress of the Colonies in North America,
from the Discovery of the Country to the year
1770, Collected by Peter Force. Washington
Printed by Peter Force, 1836.” We are indebt
ed to tho indefatigable energy or Mr. George
Schaffer, of this city, for the unearthing of this
volomo and the production of a grant to Georgia,
which antedates the Oglethorpe advent some
fifteen years. It reads as follows:
“The Underwritten Palatine and Lords Pro
prietors of the Provinoo of Carolina, do on the
consideration hereinafter mentioned Grant Sell

gomery Baronet his Heirs and Assigns for ever,

time stands charged on such skins in Sonth Car

The Georgia Medical Association.—Through
the politeness of Dr. Robt. P. Myers, the Re
cording Secretary, we have received an official
copy of the proceedings of the twentieth annual
meeting of t his body, held at St Andrew's Hall,
in this city, oommencing on the 14th of April
last.
We have only had time to give this document
a cursory examination, but we find very interest
ing reports from committees on the following
subjects: “Relation of Charlatans and their
Nostrums to Legitimate Medicine,” byDrs. G.
M. McDowell, of Barnesville; W. F. Holt, of
Macon, and G. G. Crawford, of Atlanta. “On
Medical Education,” by Dr. Thos. S. Powell, of
Atlanta. ‘ “On the Importance of the Thermom
eter to the Physician in hi&Daily Practice,” by
Dr. J. G. Thomas, of Savannah.
The following are the officers of the Associa
tion : Dr. 0. B. Nottingham, of Macon, Presi
dent ; Dr. W. A. Love, of Albany, ^First Vice
President; Dr. S. G. White.of Milledgeville, Sec
ond Vice President; Dr. W. G. Musgrove, of
Midville, Burke county. Corresponding Secre
tary ; Dr. Robert P. Myera, of Savannah, Re
cording Secretary ; and Dr. J. C. Le Hardy, of
Savannah, Treasurer.
Notice is given that in consequence of the de
struction of the Records of the Association, the
list of members is imperfect, and that Dr. W.
G. Musgrove, of Midville, Burke county, will be
thankfill to any member for the name or names
of. members left out in the list published in the
present'transactions, hoping by this means to
have a perfect list by the next meeting of the
Association, which takes place at Macon on the
second Wednesday in April, 1870.—Savannah

A Little darkey was recently found sitting
on the steps of a fashionable house not far from
Saratoga, crying pitifully. “What's de matter
wid you?” asked a colored woman. “Dar’s
matter nuff—trouble all over de house. Fod
der am drunk ; mudder am gone hum wid close;
sis done broke de looking-glass wid de broom
stick ; de baby got her eyes full of kyan pepper ;
and little Ned Antony pnt de mustard on big
hair for goose-grease. I put ailt in my f or
sugar, and it makes me sick. The dog licked
Ned's face, and got his mouth full of mustard,
and lays under de bed howlin’. De kitten got
her head in the milk-pot, and I cut her head off
• to save de pitcher to git de head out, and de
way I’ll get licked wen mndder comes home for
setting the bed afire is a sin.”

My Drab Sis—Being now satufied that my faceii

for your skillful treatment of it. Though it has been
•iz months since it healed. I have forborne writing
you beeanse of the common belief that cancerous dis
eases cannot be cured—that they can only be pallia
ted or eoverd up for a time to ro-appesr with more
than original virulence, and I thought that I would
give my case the fall benefit of all that doubt
I will state that in 188S a pimple made its appear
ance on (ho bass of my nore. near the eye; it con-
inued to increase in malignity until 1867. when I bo-
rame seriously alsrmcd about it. After submitting to
the treatment of several physicians until June. 1868,
without benefit but getting worse all the time—I went
to Louisville to consult you. I bed become satisfied
that a speedy enre must be effected or it would soon
prove fatal. By this time the cancer had extended
almost to the corner ofthe eye. involving its nerves.
' to tho top of the nose, and was rapidly growing
_ e malignant in its character. I placed myself
under your treatment: and in lese than four months
was cured and have so continued now six months I
believe that I am indebted entirely to yonr skill for
that care, and will, as a matter of duty, recommend
any one afflicted with any kind of cancerous disease
to yon for treatment, believing that if care or relief
is passible yna can afford it. Believe me. very truly

Manufacturers and Jobbers of
BOOTS AND SHOES,
Ayer’s Sarsaparilla,
FOR PURIFYING THE BLOOD.
The reputation this ex
cellent medicine enjoys,
is derived from Us cures,
many or which are of a
truly marvellous char
acter. Inveterate cases
of Scrofula, where th,
system seemed utterto
given up to corruption,
have vielded to this com
pound of anti-strumous
virtues. Disorders of s
scrofulous type, and af-
fections which aro merely
aggravated by the presence of scrofulous matter,
havo been radically cured In such numerous in-
stance,, in every settlement In tho country, that tho
public do not need to be informed here that it Is in
most cases a specific and absolute remedy.
Scrofulous poison is one of tho most destructive
enemies of onr race. Often, this unseen and unfclt
tenant of the organism undermines tho constitution,
and invites tho attack of enfeebling or fatal diseases,
wUhontexcitingasuspicionofltsprescncc. Again,
It seems to breed infection throughout tho body, and
then, on some favorable occasion, rapidly develop
into one or other of its hideous forms, cither on tho
surface or among the vitals. In the latter, tuber
cles may bo suddenly deposited in tho lungs or
heart, or tumors formed in the liver. These facts
make the occasional use of the Sarsaparilla as a
preventive, advisable.
It is a mistake to suppose that so long as no erup
tions or humors appear, there mast bo no scrofulous
taint. Tboso forms of derangement may never
occur, and yet tho vital forces of the body bo so re
duced by Its subtlo agency, as materially to impair
the health and shorten tho duration of life. It Is a
common error, also, that scrofula is strictly hcredl-
tary. It doca, indeed, descend flrom parent to child,
but is also engendered in persons bom of pure
blood. Low living, indigestion, foul air, licentious
habits, uncleanliness, and the depressing vices gen-
orally, produce it, wcaklyconstilutions, where not
fortified by the most constant and judicious care,
arc peculiarly liable to it. Yet tho robust, also,
whose turbid blood swells the veins with an appar
ently exuberant vitality, aro often contaminated,
and on the road to its consequences. Indeed, no
class or condition can depend on immnnlty from
it, nor feel insensible to tho importance of an effec
tual remedy.
In St. Anthony** Tire, Boat or Brytipelas,
for Tetter, Salt llheum. Scald Head, Jliny-
tcorm. Sore Ear* and Eye*, and other eruptive
or visible forms ofthe diseases caused primarily bv
'the scrofulous infection, tho SartapariUa is so ef
ficient as to bo indispensable. And in tho more
concealed forms, arln l>yepeptia,Dropsy, Heart
Disease, Bits, Epilepsy, S'euraUjla, and other
affections ofthe muscular and nervous'systems, tho
Sarsaparilla, through its puri/Ving power, re
moves too cause of the disorder and produces as ton-
isliing cures.
The sarsaparilla root of the tropics docs not by
itself achieve these resfilts. It is aided by tho ex-
tracts combined with it, of still greater power. So
potent Is this union of healing virtues, Syphilis or
Venereal and Mercurial Diseases aro cured by
it, though a long time is required for subduing these
obstinate maladies by any medicine. Eeueorrheea
or Whites, Uterine Ulcerations, and Eemale
Diseases in general, are commonly soon relieved
and ultimately cured by tbe invigorating and puri
fying effect or oar Sarsaparilla, llheumatlsni
and Gout, often dependent on the accumulations of
extraneous matters in the blood, have their remedy
also in this medicine. For Elver Complaints,
torpidity, Inflammation, nbcess, etc., caused by
rankling poisons In the blood, we unhesitatingly
recommend the Sarsaparilla.
This medicine restores health and vigor where no
specific disease can bo distinguished. Its restora
tive power is soon felt by those who are Eanmtid,
Etsttess, Despondent, Sleepless, and filled with
Rene«^5rt!flre^av^Stt^^^^5^outh.
fUl vigor imparted to their nervous system, which
seemed buoyant with that prolific life they thought
had departed on the advance of age. Others, whoso
fountains of life were always sterile, acknowledge
their obligations to it for an obvious change.
