Host to Promote Sleep.
From Good
In order to promote Bleep in cases -where it is (
wanting, it is, of coarse, in the first place, nee- -
crhary to remove every exciting cause of wake
fulness. It is generally essential to give up the
use of tea and coffee, and, as has been said, it !
is sometimes necessary to leave off stimulants. :
The person should take care that ho does not j
go to Led eilherwith coldfeet or with a stomach
that has been long empty.
Many devices for inducing somnolence have
been practiced with more or less success; one
of these is combing the hair, which has a very
soothing effect on some persons. Another is to i
have the feet gently shampooed. Walkingabont
the bedroom in one’s night dress, so as to get
what Dr. Franklin called an air bath, is a good j
plan, find the cold water bath ju-t beforo retir
ing to rest, by virtue of its .stimulating action, ;
is often successful. In more refractory cases
the warm bath may be tried—it acta by with- j
drawing the blood from the brain. On the same
principle, the upright position, by favoring the
return of blood from the head, is sometimes
useful. It is, indeed, no uncommon thing to
meet people who sleep with great facility when 1
sitting in a chair or in a carriage, lmt who Bleep
with difficulty when lying down in bed.
The best bed to sleep upon is a hair mattress,
and the worst of nil is that made of feathers.
Many people aro so susceptible that they are
unable to sleep in a strange bed. A pillow filled
with hops, the emanations from which are nnr-
cotic, lias been sometimes used with success to
indneo sleep.
People, as a rnle, go to sleep most easily when
lying on the right side. Proper ventilation of
the bed-room is indispensable for sound sleep
and for health.
Sufficient ont-door exercise should, in every
instance, be taken, and those who are strong
enough, shonld cany it to a sense of fatigue.
In the Satires of Horace, to swim three times
across the Tiber is recommended as a means of
procuring deep repose.

EVERY COTTON PLANTER SHOULD HAVE A
“COTTON PLANT!”
AND HERE IT IS
G-RE A T
Bruin Food.
Some time ngo Prof. Agassiz asserted before
a Boston gathering “that fish diet, by virtne of
the phosphorus it contains, is pre-eminently
adapted to nonrish the brain, and that those who
subsist upon it largely aro distinguished for
their brightness and intellectuality.” Dr, G.
M. Beard seeks to contradict this theory in a
magazine article, and argues that brain workers
require richer and more substantial food, and
.more of it than mechanics and laboring men,
because—
Firtt—Labor of the brain causes greater
waste of tissue than labor of the muscles. Three
hours' hard study produce more important
changes of tissue than a whole day of muscular
labor.
Second—Brain-workers, ns a class, are more
active in their work, anil work moro timo than
mechanics and laborers, the thinking powers,
the tools of trade of brain-workers, nre always
at hand, anil seldom idle.
TVu',-if—Brain-workers exercise, more or less,
all the other organs of the body as weU aa the
brain.
To corrroborate his views, Dr. Beard cltea ra-
rions nationalities. For example, the Romans,
Persians, and Babylonians were dominant na
tions among the ancients, and they were free
nud luxurious in theirhabitaof eating. In mod
em times the English, German, French, and
Americans are ruling peoples, and they are the
greatest outers.

Ayer’s Sarsaparilla,
FOB PUBDmG THE BLOOD.
The reputation this
cellent medicine enjoys,
is derived from its cures,
many of which are of *
truly marvellous char
acter. Inveterate cases
of Scrofula, where thg
system seemed utterkr
given up to corruption,
have yielded to this com
pound of anti-strumous
virtues. Disorders of a
scrofulous type, and af
fections which are merely
aggravated by the presence of scrofulous matter,
have been radically cured in such numerous in
stances. in every settlement in the country, that the
public ao not need to be informed here that it is in
most cases a specific and absolute remedy.
Scrofulous poison is one of the most destructive
cnemie3 of our race. Often, thismnscen and unfelC
tenant of the organism undermines the constitution,
and invites the attack of enfeebling or fatal diseases,
without exciting a suspicion of its presence. Again,
it seems to breed infection throughout the body, and
then, on some favorable occasion, rapidly develop
into one or other of its hideous forms, either on tho
surface or among the vitals. In the latter, tuber
cles may be suddenly deposited in the lungs or
heart, or tumors formed in the liver. These facts
make the occasional U3e of the Sarsaparilla as a
preventive, advisable. i
It is a mistake to suppose that so long as no erup
tions or humors appear, there must be no scrofulous
taint. These forms of derangement may never
occur, and yet the vital forces of the body l>c so re?
duced by its subtle agency, as materially to impair
the health and shorten the duration of life. It is a
common error, also, that scrofula is strictlv heredi
tary. It doe3, indeed, descend from parent to child,
but is also engendered in persons bom of pure
blood. Low living, indigestion, foul air, licentious
habits, unclcanliness, and the depressing vices gen
erally, produce it. Weakly constitutions where not
fortified by* the most constant and judicious care,
are peculiarly liable to it. Yet the robust, also,
whose turbid Llood swells the veins with an appar
ently exuberant vitality, are often contaminated,
and on the road to its consequences. Indeed, no
class or condition can depend on immunity* from
it, nor feel insensible to the importance of an effec
tual remedy.
In St. A.nthony’s Fire, Rose or Erysipelas,
for Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Ring-
icorni, Sore Ears and Eyes, and other eruptive
or visible forms of the diseases caused primarily by
the scrofulous infection, the Sarsaparilla is so ef
ficient as to be indispensable. And in the more
concealed fonns, as in Dyspepsia,Dropsy, Heart
Disease, Fits, Epilepsy, yeurcilgia, and other
affections of tho muscular aad nervous systems, tho
Sarsaparilla, through its purifying 'power, re
moves the cause of the disorder ancTnroduces aston
ishing cures.
Tbe sarsaparilla root of the tropics does not by
itself achieve these results. It is aided by the ex
tracts combined with it, of still greater power. So
potent is this union of healing virtues, Syphilis or
Venereal and Mercurial Diseases are cured by
it, though a long time is required for subduing these
obstinate maladies by am* medicine. JLeucorrhcca
or J Whites, Uterine Ulcerations, and Female
Diseases in general, are commonly soon relieved
and ultimate!v* cured by the invigorating and puri
fying effect of our Sarsaparilla, Rheumatism
and Oout, oftendependentonthe accumulations of
extraneous matters in the blood, have their remedy
also in this medicine. For Liver Complaints,
torpidity, inflammation, abcess, etc., caused by
rankling poisons in the blood, we unhesitatingly
recommend the Sarsaparilla.
This medicine restores health and vigor where no
specific disease can be distinguished. Its restora
tive power is soon felt by those who are languid,
Listless, Despondent, Sleepless, and filled with
tY r T? u ? Apprehensions or Fears, or who are
troubled with any other of those affections symp
tomatic of weakness. Many, after taking it for
General Debility, have written us of the youth
ful vigor imparted to their nervous system, which
seemed buoyant with that prolific life they thought
had departed on the advance of age. Others, whose
fountains of life were always sterile, acknowledgo
their obligations to it for an obvious change.
