Chinese Scrvnnls.
A correRpondent of the Cincinnati Cominer*
ci/il writ<'« as foliowk from San Francioco:
The problem which every housewife in the
world has l>een watching with interest from the
beginning of time is going to be solved, so far
rh this country is concerned, by the Chinaman.
In the capacity of house servants, he has not,
acoording to the universal opinion here among
housekeepers, a serious fault or any disagreea
ble habit from which it is not possible to break
him in a very short time. The^ are very tidy,
they like steady employment, uniform ways, and
ask few privileges. They are honest, frugal,
careful and industrious, and take great pride in
the excellence of their work, whether in cooking,
or chamber work, or as body servants, or gen
eral waiters or bell-boys. They do all classes of
work that the American servant girl does. Many
of them in this State are even employed as child
nnrtteit and seamatroftsoa.
A lady with whom I conversed here, the wife
of a banker and a very prominent gentleman,
says «ho has had many years’ experience with
the Chinese as house-servants, and that Eastern
people can form no idea of the cleanliness of
the Chinamen and their general excellence. She
prefers them to any other class of help. Her
HCrvants bathed twico daily, and one of them,
who -was intrusted with the purchase of the
family supplies and the payment therefor, was
in constant trouble with shop-keepers because
ho insisted upon the luinnto inspection of arti
cles, the weighing or measuring of everything
himRclf, anil exacting the precise change in
money. Thoro are kondrods of servants here
who have been in the same family for ten yean,
which is tbo best recommendation that can be
given, considering how plenty servants are
here. As to their wages, they charge, it may
he, a little more than Irish help of a miscella
neous character, bnt their wagea are alwaya
reasonable and oven low for the work they per
form.
Canniibiillsin.
Some French soldiers w»ro lately taken pris
oners by the Canaks, and one-of them was
killed and eaten. Hia comrades describe tho
process, Tho Canaks first decapitate their vic
tim, a matter of no small difficulty, considering
the bluntness of their hatchets. Ten to fifteen
blows are necessary. The body ia then hnng
jtp to a troo by tbe'feet, and the blood allowed
to run out for an hoar. Meanwhile a hole a
yard and a half deep and a yard wido is dag in
tho ground. Tho halo is fillod with stones, and
in tho midst of them a great firo is lit. When
tho wood is burnt down a little and glows with
host, it is oovered over with more stones. The
man is then cleaned ont and divided into pieces
about a foot long, the hands and feet being
thrownjaway aa worthless. The pieces of the
man are placed on the leaves of a Urge rose
troo peculiar to the tropics. The meat is sur
rounded with cocoannlo, bananas, and some
other plants noted for their delicate flavor. Tho
wholo is then tied together firmly, the fire U ro-
rooved from the pit, the moat U placed in among
tho hot stones, and thus, carefully oovered, to
left to cook for an hour. Women do not par
take of this warriors’ feast. Men alone are per
mitted to enjoy so groat an honor and bo rare a
dolicaoy.
An Old Friend with m New Face.
Tho old Rational Intelligencer, tho demise of
which a few months ago caused some sensation
in tho nowspnper world, is to be revived in anew
form. The proprietors of the Washington
Evening Express announce that that paper will
he merged with the Intelligencer under tho
noma of the Daily Intelligencer and Express,
and published ns a Democratic morning journal.
The first issue is to make its appearance to-day.
The combination will enjoy many elements of
strength, and it is to be hoped that tho result
will he a paper every way a worthy representa
tive of Democratic interests at the national cap
ital.—Charititon New.

An Important Decision Urox Federal Court
Jurisdiction.—On Thursday last Judge Er-
kine, of tho District Court of the United States
made a decision involving a most important
point of jurisdiction.
The leading points decided, are:
]. Tho District Court of the United States has
Ho jurisdiction when the suit is brought by the
endorseo against the maker and endorser of a
note, if both tho maker and endorser reside in
the State when the suit is brought.
2. If judgment is rendered in such a case,
and the facts appear affirmatively on the face of
the record, the judgment will be declared void
whenover tho matter is presented to the Court.
^[Satonnah Neirs.
Jat did a nice thing this summer. As
the world knows, he has a splendid estate at
Fut-in-Bav Islands. He invited a large number
of clergymen to visit him and spend a few weeks
in boating, Ashing and other recreations. Ho
did not invite fashionable clergymen with large
salaries and great fame. He selocted lowly
ministers—men who eke out a scanty livelihood
on starvation salaries, agents of l-^evolent so
cieties on poor pay, and city missionaries who
cannot travel, and who have no money to spend
at fashionable watering places. Mr. Cooke paid
all the expenses of transportation, made theso
clerical gentlemen very happy, and put money
into their purse when they left.

take pleasure : n recommending your Hosa-
d-ilip as a very powerful alterative. Xhave
seen it used in two eases with happy results:
one in a case, of secondary >yptilU. in
which the patient pronounced himself
cured after having taken five bottles of
your medicine. The other is a case of
scrofula of lone standing, which i< rapidlj
improving under its use, and the indica
tions are that the patient will soon recover.
I have carefully examined the formula?
by which y^ur Rosadalis is made, and find
it an excellent compound of alterative in
gredients.
