At the commencement of the diarrhoea, which al
ways precedes an attack of the cholera, take a tea-

diarrhcca or cramps continue, repeat tho dose every
fifteen or twenty minutes till the patient is relioved.

A Reservoir—The subject of building s
voir somewhere above town, on the river bank,
I from which ths city could, st all times, be supplied
I with ample quantity of water, has been itlacn«a«d
so often in tho city papers, and with such fruitless
results, that we have well nigh abandoned the hope
that the work will l>e undertaken in our day and
time. Whatever may have been said heretofore in
regard to a reservoir, pro and row, we think the
late extraordinary spell of dry weather is the
strongest argument in favor of such an institution,
that has been presented for many years. Our wells
and springs are failing rapidly, the water in the
cisterns is nearely exhausted, and many of our dti-
Eena are subjected to great inconvenience and
trouble in procuring even a scant supply of thia in
dispensable fluid. The bars statement of these
facta suggests the inquiry, as to how the evil can be
remedied, if not obviated, in future. We can dear
ly see no permanent relief save in t lie construction
of a reservoir of sufficient dimensions to water the
city, somewhere upon the high grounds above the
city. And it will be constructed at some time in
tho future, but not until after the alow coaches of
the present are broken down and a more vigorous
and active spirit of enterprise animate oar pnhiio
functionaries.
Bain.—On the 26th of August last wo had •
abower of rain, aeoompanled try much thunder,
lightning and wind, and from that time until yes
terday forenoon, not one drop of rein fell in the
dty; but at that hour a moat refreshing rein fell,
and was followod by others, at intervals, during the
rest of the day.
The shower which foil about two o'clock, however,
was the shower of tho day, and was introduced by a
pretty strong and festive gale which treated the
handsome young mailing clerk of this establish
ment most scandalously, as it blew out at the win
dow of bis private room in this office, and into the
rein and mnd on the streets, sundry articles of
soiled wearing apparel, which he was laying aside to
taro over to bis washwoman, so soon as be could
raise tbo “spondulicks" to settle the bill. From the
looks of tho garments aa they lay scattered about
the streets, we opined that a little rain mixed with
soap instead of mud, would not hurt their appear-
anco much.
ScraRion Court.—His Honor, Jodge Cole, pro-
nouncod his decision on yesterday morning, on the
application for a new trial in the case of Roger L.
Gamble vs. Knott 4 Hollingsworth. A new trial
was rotated upon the ground that the jury were the
judges of tba facta, and that there was evidence to
sustain tho verdict. Tho plaintiff claimed several
thousand dollars upon a contract made with defend
ants for the lease of a farm, stock, etc., for one
year. The defendants pleaded a failure of consid
eration and damages. The verdict rendered against
the defendants amounted to 81,500—which stands
affirmed by Judge Oole's dociaion. The case will be
taken-to the Supremo Court.
The Court announced that its dociaion in the mo
tion for a new trial in Alfred Hoye's case would be
pronounced this morning at 9 o'clock.
Trass.—Would it not bo a good idea for tho mer
chants of the dty who are opening their new goods,
to set a good’s box aside, or in the rear of their
stores, and put all their scrap paper and trash in it,
instead of sweeping it ont into tho streets to be
blown all over town ? Tba box containing such lit
ter could then be turned over to the street scaven
gers every Saturday evening, and after emptying it
In to the carts, the scavengers could return the box
to its place. Thia would bo a very simple process,
and we aro sure tho streets would look much better
daring the week, and it would suppress, also, much
complaint among many of our citizens in regard to
the piles of trash which the wind accumulates in
front of their doors, and for which they are not re
sponsible.
