The Rome Southerner .1 Commercial lias an
article upon this subject, alluded to yesterday,
from which wo clip the following:
The existence of rich gold mines, near Alia-
toonn depot, in Bartow county, baa been known
for thirty-six years. Millions of gold, of the
finest quality, have been taken from the depo
sits on the branches, north-east side of Altoona
creek. Gold liearing quartz, exceedingly rich,
ia fonnd in veins or leads mnning very nearly
north-east and south-west. A belt of country,
about fivo miles in width, iH traversed by these
veinB, many of which hsve Been discovered, bnt
worked only in a superficial manner, Mr. Gill,
,ome two years since, purchased, at a cost of
about $40,000, some ten or twelvo forty acre
lota in this vicinity, embracing the openings on
the vein known as East port and Sugar Hilj, and
alao a diacovery called the Francisco vein.—
These veins are all separate—on different leads.
The Eastport vein has been opened on the lot
of Gen. Win. Thillips, of Marietta, Ga., about
ono half mile from the original discovery, and
ia fonnd to be very rich at both points. GoL
John 11. Towers, of Home, Ga., and his associ
ates, own the lot which intervenes Irctween
Eastport and Phillips vein, No. 850, -1st Iri-
atrict and 2d Section. On this lot fine speci
mens of gold bearing quartz have been found—
a rich surface mine also exists on it, and very
fine particles of native or virgin gold have been
picked up after showers of rain, weighing from
two to three pennyweights.
The only difficulty in developing minos of
great value would seem to he a want of cspitaL
The Gill mines, under the direction of a Bos
ton company, (who perhaps are now the owners
of tho property,) of which Capt. Cosby is tho
managing agent, arc now beiDg opened in a sci
entific way, and there is little, if any, doubt that
discoveries will bo exhibited that will astonish
all the aearchors after mineral wealth. If a
tithe of tho reports of tho richness of the Fran
cisco and Eastport leads bo true, nothing like it
has been fonnd on tho continent of America.
Some of our most truthful citizens have seen
specimens of tho oro and bear witness to the
great valuo of it. It is reported that ono ton of
tho ore recently token from the shafts has been
tested and examined and will yield §20,000.

EVERY COTTON PLANTER SHOULD HAVE A
COTTON PLANT!”
AND HERE IT IS
The Stale Fair—Dougherty to Camp
on the Field.
Tho timo is now so close upon ns that the
question of quarter* becomes important to Ag
ricultural Clubs, and to citizens generally who
contemplate visiting Macon during the Fair.
Tho Dougherty County Club will hold its reg
ular meotiug on Saturday next, when the ques
tion will ho determined whethor wo go as a Clab
and enmp on the field, or simply send ten dele
gates and let them take their chances with the
multitude.
The former we hopo and believe will be de
termined on; and in that event it will Ire all im
portant to ascertain, at once, who will go. We,
therefore, oneo moro nrgo ovory member of the
Club, and all citizens who desire to become
members, to bo present and assist in the busi
ness of tho meeting.
It will bo necessary to appoint a committee of
subsiatence, a committee on equipage, and one
on finances. Many mattora essential to the
success of tho expedition will have to bo at
tended to, and a fall meeting will facilitate busi
ness wonderfully.
A number of gentlemen have already resolved
to make an encampment on the grounds, and
wo have written to tho committee to locate and
set apart a npot for their accommodation.
During tho week wo shall be glad to take tho
names of all who wish to join the party. The
books of the Farmer’s Club are at our office,
and we respectfully invito those who aro not
mombent to call np and ontcr their names; and
as tho Constitution does not confine membership
to citizons of tho connty. Baker, Mitchell, Lee,
Worth and other neighboring counties are cor
dially invited to unite with us.—Albany Netes.
From Nonroe County.
We clip the following from tho Advertiser of
tho 2Sth:
Tho fence question, which will bo np for dis
cussion beforo tho Agricultural Society next
Friday, will in many respects be a most im
portant one, and it is to bo hoped that those
who propose to mako any arguments, pro or
con, will givo tho matter thorongh and deliber
ate investigation. Practically considered, tho
question is of more importance to the farmers
of Georgia just at this juncture than immigra
tion. We hope to seo a large turn-ont.
The Savannah Repaidican says: 44 A corres
pondent of tho Monroe Advertiser says tho ne
groes in one of the districts of Monroe county
are contemplating a strike for better pay. It is
their intention to demand one-half of all pro
duce, instead of one-third—the farmer to bear
all expenses, as heretofore. If tho negro can
not prosper with a third of tho crop at present
prices of cotton, there is nothing between him
and starvation. A few shiploads of Chinese
will put matters all right in Monroe.”
Exactly. The negro is cutting his own throat;
he will compel us to have immigration whether
wo will or not. He is not willing to patiently
await tho fruits of his freedom, and tho result
will bo that he will be superseded by other labor.
