It is interesting, says the Pall Mall Gazette of September 9, at the present time, to recall the accoant given of the last moments of Lord By ron by his servant Fletcher. Fletcher Kays: Although his Lordship did not appear to think hia dissolution was bo near, I could perceive he waa getting weaker every hour, and he even be gan to have occasional fits of delirium. He af terwards said, 44 1 now begin lo think I am se riously ill, and in case I should be taken off sud denly, I wish to give you several directions, which I hope you will bo particular in seeing executed.” I answered I would in case such an event came to paaa, but expressed n hope that ho would live many years to execute them much better himself than I could. To Ibis, my mas ter replied : 44 No, it is now nearly over:” and then added : “I must tell yon all without losing a moment. I then said, 44 Shall I go, my Lord, and fetch pen, ink and paper?” t4 Oh, rny God! no; you will lose too much time, and I have it not to spare, for my time is now short,” said his Lordship ; and immediately after : Now, pay attention.” His Lordahip commenced by saying : 44 Yon will bo provided for.” I begged him, however, to proceed with things of more consequence. Ho then continued ; 44 Oh, my I poor dear child ! My dear Adah ! My God, | could I have but have seen her! Give her my | blessing — and my dear nister Augusta and ! her children; and you will go to Lady By- ! ron and say — tell her everything; yon are | friends with her.” His Lordship appeared to be greatly affected at this moment. Here my master's voico failed him, so that I j could only catch a word at intervals; but ho kept , muttering something very serionnly for some ! Consignments solicited: Remifances mad® time, and would often raise his voice and say, promptly; Advance* of Pro vision*. Bar ging, Ti« tad “ Fletcher, now if you do not execute every or- * endln * « C3 “» B for «**• der which I have given yon, I will torment yon * — *' EVERY COTTON PLANTER SHOULD HAVE A COTTON PLANT!” AND HERE IT IS JOSEPH FINEGAN & CO.. Can it bo possible you havo not understood mo?" “No, my lord," said I, “but I pray you to try and inform me onco more." “How can I?" rojoined my mas ter ; “it is now too late, and all is oyer.” I said, “Not our will, bnt God's be done and ho an- sworod, “Yes, not mine be done, but I will try.” nis Lordship did indeed make several efforts to sponk, bnt could only repeat two or threo words at a time, such as “My wifemy child! my sis ter ! yon know nil—you must say all—you know my wishes." Tho rest was qnito unintelligible. Lord Byron shortly sfterward fell into a leth argy, which ended by death—hia last intelligi- blo words being, “I mnst sleep now.” The fol lowing oxtract from “Medwin's Conversations of lord Byron,” will probably interest Mrs. Beecher Stowe. Speaking of Americans, his Lordship said: Americans nro tho only people to whom I never refused to show myself. The Yankees arG great friends of mine. I wish to bo well thought of on tho other side of the Atlantlo; not that I am better appreciated there than on this; perhaps worse. Some American reviewer has been persevering in his abuse and person- nlitv, bnt ho should havo minded his ledger; he nover excited my splocn. Napoleon's Disease, A late Paris lettter says : “ The Emperor is gotting on, nearly got well this time again, of ono of those ugly attacks nnder the next worse recorded of which lie cmno so near succumbing in 1804. What definitely his chief active mal ady is, cannot bo assnrodly asserted by yonr re port or. His primary disense, inevitably fatal in tho long run, ia, of courso, chronologioal. He was bom in April, 1808—can’t recover from that. Item. Has chronic rheumatism, with soiatio and intestinal variations; hath farther- more general and well-nigh nnivorsal hydraulic troubles—if I may so express myself, and I think I may, seeing thnt all medical men don't bositato in that regard. Tho Bads say he has the atone; morn moderate Liberals attribute gravol; political indifferents and conservative gossips bold to hemorrhoids, diabetes, and Bright's disease." The National Intelligencer breaks ground against tho movement for tho introduction of Ghinoso laborers into this country, and quotes Hon. George II. Pendleton as follows : “But tho Chinese will givo us cheap labor. Cheap human labor! I despise tho word. It siguifies a crime and a shame. It signifies squal or, repudiation, ignorance, vico. Are not la borers men; our fellow-men ? They have bodies to clotbo and stomachs to feed, and minds to educato and spirits tc elevate, and old ago to provide for ? Thoy have homes which they love, aud wives whom thoy cherish, and children whom they hope to make worthy citizens—the honost fathers and tho virtnous mothers of a succeedinggeueration. * * Labor is too cheap now.
