Dceetg a recent visit to New York President

New Obdxass, October 6 This morning's Pica
yune, in an article on custom house frauds during
Kellogg's regime, mentioned tho British schooner
Harkawav os a vessel that cleared for Ilonalnlu
ith a cargo of whisky that one twice her capacity
conld not have carried. This evening's Picayuno
says they have had some light thrown upon the mat'
ter. J. C. Forbes A Co. threw tho whisky on the
market from their bonded warehouse, and endeav
ored to cover the matter up in this way, and says:
‘The bonds, which wero mere bonds of storage,
waa accepted, after some hesitation, by tbs bond
clerk, and the papers went through the custom
house until they rev&ed tho entry clerk, who, on
comparing the tonnage of the vessel with the cargo,
onco saw tho fraud and reported the same to Mr.
Kellogg. Tho bogus shipment waa consequently
stopped.'
Probable Release of the Cuba.
3Vtl.3fiNc.TON, October 6.—The entertainment on
board the Cuban Hloop-of-wir, Cubs, wait attended
largo number of ladies and gentlemen this
evening. There aro no new developments concern
ing the stains of the Cubs, bnt the public mind
here is unanimous in the opinion that she will be
released as soon ss investigation has been made.
Her rcleaso by the United States authorities at Phil-
dclpliia, and by tho British authorities at Halifax,
and tho fact that she ia a vessel of war, regularly
commissioned by tho Cuban government, and not
fitted out in any Unitet States pert, seems conclu
sive that there is no justification for her detention.

Thz Emperor of Brazil has appointed a “Board
Health” to investigate and decide what pro
prietary remedies should bo admitted into the
country, and what excluded. After some months
session they have reported, condemning them
except Dr. J. C. Ayer A Co.'s preparations.
Three of those they recommended the Emper-
to admit for the benefit of the public health,
while they hold the fourth, Cherry Pectoral un
der advisement for further information respect
ing one of its ingredients—morphine, which,
while so extensively employed and so highly es
teemed as a remedy in this country, ia scarcely
known in that. Of all the other medicines be
fore them, the Imperial commission say, no'
one of them merits any favor whatever, or pro
tection from this Government, as they contain
nothing new nor any specific virtues not fully
known and used by our own physicians. The
Imperial Government has accordingly prohibit
ed them all from admission through the custom
house, except the remedies of our distinguished
contrymen above mentioned—a discrimination
by their learned men, very like that to which
experience has led the American people.—Boa-
ton Herald.

WORTHY OP ATTSNSXOS.
To Dr. Tho*. A. Hurley:
I hereby certify that daring last year I waa attack
ed with the Ague whilst in Vicksburg. Miss., and used
several popular medicines with but temporary relief.
On reaching home the disease return od in a worse type,
if possible, when my medical attendant ordered Qui
nine in large doses— frequently as high as sixty
grains per day. and which must have cost mo nearly
$100. I consulted Dr. fcmith. of Louisville, and found
he prescribed quinine and arsenic combined, which I
refused to take, preferring to let tho disease take its
course. I was almost bloodness, extremely exhausted,
and pronounced with enlarge Liver and Spleen. About
this time the advertisement of Hurley's Ague Tonic
appeared in a city paper, and I determined to giro it
a trial. I did sc, and have no reason to regret it.
One bottle restored me completely, and since that time
I have seen nearly a hundred cases in which it acted
with equally happy results, and would certainty
recommend it as preferable to any other tonic before
the public.

Gp.stlkmv.s : This is to certify thsi I have been for
years a sufFerer, and have tried all the tonics I have
heard of or seen advertised, with little or no relief
from any of them. I heard your Hurley Bitters high
