From the Joint Committee to Gen. Lafayette.
General ; Weijrea Committue of the
Senate and House of Representatives, chaSk
ged with the office of informing you of the
passage of au act, a copy of which 4<t n
present. You will perceive from
sir, (hat the two Houses of Congn
of the large pecuniary as well as .ier sac- i
t? ifiecs which your lortg and arduous devotion'
to the cause of freedom has cost you, have
deemed it their privilege to reimburse a por
tion of them, as having been incurred in part
on account of the United States. The
principles that have marked your character
will not permit you to oppose any objection
to the discharge of so much of the national
obligation to you as admits of it. We are
directed to express to you the confidence,
as well as the request, of the two Houses,
that you will, by an acquiesence with their
wishes in this respect, add another to the
many and signal proofs you have afforded
of your esteem for a people, whose esteem
for you can never cease until they have ceas
ed to prize the liberty they enjoy, and emu
late the virtues by which it was acquired.—
We hate only to subjoin an expression of
our gratification in being the organs of this
communication, and of the distinguished
nersonal respect with which we are,

General Lafayette’s Reply.
Washington, Jan. 1825.
Gentlemen of the Committee of both Houses of Cong reus :
The immense and unexpected gift, which,
in addition to former and considerable boun
ties, it has pleased Congress to confer upon
me, calls for the warmest acknowledgements
of an old American soldier and adopteij son
of the United States—two titles dearer to
my heart than all the treasures of the world.
However proud 1 am of every sort of ob
ligation received from ttte people of the U.
States and their Representatives in Con
gress, the large extent of this benefaction
might have created in my mind feelings of
hesitation, hot inconsistent, I hope with
those of the most grateful reverence. But
the so very kind resolution of both Houses,
delivered by you, gentlemen, in terms of
.equal kindness, precludes all other senti
ments but those of the lively and profound
gratitude ot- which, in respectfully accep
ting the munificient favor, I have the honor
to beg you will be the organ.
Permit me, also gentlemen, to join a ten
der of my affectionate personal thanks to the
expression of the highest respect, with which
I have the honor to be,
Yolir obedient servant,
LAFAYETTE.

DU HOURL, a French Physician, respectfully
informs the public, that he has established
STEAM aid MEDICAL BATHS in Augusta.
Ihe very high repute thea* Baths have acquired
n Europe, where (although a late discovery)
ihey are to be found in every hospital, and the
ijreat cures they have performed in Boston, Pul

their efficacy. The mist gentle as well as the
moat powerful medicines are administered by that
means, without any pain, trouble or disgust to the
patient.
They are a never tailing remedy i» all cutane
ous affections; from Psora, Ringworms, &c. to
Scahlhead Leprosy, They also have never
laded of success in either acute or chronic rheu
matism. v
In glandular obstructions, chlorosis, anasarcous
swellings, incipient dropsy i in ad diseases of the
joints, gouty affections, dispersion of tumors, ill '
cured syphilis, spasmodic or nervous affections;
in all bilious disorders, dyspepsia, hypocimdriasis,
epilepsy—these baths have been found most ser

ditary complaints. In fine, this manner of admin

healing art, may be rendered applicable to almost
every case, and (it is repea'ed) without any pain,
'rouble, or disgust to the patient.
As these baths are not yet generally known,
