The Indian Treaty. —The last Georgia ' Journal states, that since the arrival of Col. Campbell, one of the Commissioners for con- 1 clmling the Indian Treaty, at Washington, ( a full developeinent has taken place ot the causes which led to the late failure at Bro- i ken Arrow, and that those who spread toils i for others, have been for once, caught them- I selves. Another meeting of the Indians I and Commissioners, is expected to take i place shortly at the Indian Springs. I i Washi sgton, January 20. Portrait of La Fay die.--- This portrait, | from the pencil of sohveffek. presented i by the artist to Congress, has arrived in tiiis | citv, and was on Tuesday placed for public examination, in the liotundo of the Capitol. 1 It is a full length, as large as life, and in all jj the essentials of likeness, expression, elm- 1 racter and colouring, is, in our opinion, the, 1 best portrait we have ever seen. Its fideli- ; l ty to the venerable original is, indeed, most I admirable. ShsefFer is an artist of eminence in Paris, and being a man withal ot private worth, talents, and liberal principles, he is Sjioftea a guest at La Grange, for weeks toge ther. Tliese visits, a Hording him ample, o*|fcortui)ity of studying the illustrious in-j dmdual, whom he greatly venerates, have him to produce, with so much truth, this IritOnphant specimen of his skill. We have beemin, formed that Gerard, the greatest painter, in Europe—at least at the head ofj his profession in France—was about to un dertake a portrait of General Lafayette, but, on viewing the portrait exec .ted by 1 SlnelVer, he abandoned his purpose, despair in«r he said, to equal its emits* mblance to tee on-dnal. It is this port rail which vl. Shtvf ferhas, in such handsome terms, presemed to Congress, and it is a present every way worthy id' the artist, the distinguished origin* id, and the elected body to which it has been tendered. (WaL Ini. Extract of a letter from Havana dated the 13 th instant. “ We have nothing new, but acts of Pira cy every day. The brig Edward, of New- York, from Bordeaux, for this place, with a valuable cargo, has been captured and car ried off, and the captitlu murdered : the crew and supercargo, while they were be low escaped in the boat.— -Chas. Pat. Savannah, February 1. FROM GIBRALTAR. By the arrival yesterday of the ship Wil liam Penn, Captain West, we have, received the Gibraltar Chronicle of the lull Decem ber. It contains no intelligence, bat ex tracts from London papers of the 23d Nov. On the alfurs of Spain it is totally silent. We learn verbally only that the affairs of tin Greeks continue to prosper and that the Spain were in the most un settled stale. Business of all kinds at Gibraltar was dull, and no freights tube obtained. The American squadron, con sisting of the Co istitutio.n, Cyane, Ontario and Eiie, sailed from Gibraltar up the Straits about a week before the departure of Capt. West. Commodore M'Doiiough was in a very bad state of health. Baltimore, Jan. 21. From the Pacific. — The brig Canada, cap tain Hutchins, arrived at this port yesterday from the Pacific, having left Callao on the 21st September and Valparaiso on the 28th October. Capt. Hutchins reports that the • Spanish squadron, consisting of the Asia, 04, and brig Achilles id' 22 guns, arrived at Callao, on the 12th September. Admiral Guise in his frigate of 38 guns, and schoon er Macedonia, then lying under the island of San L irenio, descried their approach by means of a telegraph he had established on the island. He challenged them to action, lint the Spaniards declined the invitation, and passed to windward, under a press of •sail fir the Castles. Guise remained off the harbor four days and then went to Huan chaclto to collect more force. During his absence the Spaniards had determined on an expedition (destination unknown) to con sist of the Asia, Achilles, ship Esther of 28 guns, brig Pernelta, of 18, and brig Con-j slate of 7 guns, with several transports. — The return of Guise on the Gth of October, 1 with an addition to his force of 4 of the Co-j lombian squadron will find them other em-i ployment. Guise had resumed his old an-1 chorage under the island. General Ramirez, had retired to Susgera.' The ad vices had reached Lima, of the ar rival at Huaucliacho of 150 U men from Pa-j nama under the convoy of Admiral Spry.j Bolivar was at Guarnanca, marching on fori Cuzco. The Vice-King was at Ciquiani,| 30 leagues from Cuzco, to be joined by Val dez.” United Stales Squadron■ —The frigate United States, Coin. Hull, was at Callao, on the 2lst September. The United States sloop of War Peacock, Capt. Carter, had sailed about a fortnight before for Quilca; the officers and crews ot both vessels were remarkably healthy. ■ Flour, at Callao on the 21st September, was twenty-five dollars per barrel. [American. Fire at St. Augustine.—VLj the sloop William, we have received the St. Augus j tine Herald of the 25th inst. About 2 o’clock on the morning of the 23d inst. a fire broke out in the upper part of the buil ding occupied by Mrs. Campbell as a board ing house. The wind blowing high, the fire was not got under until it had consumed 0,, , , thehouse in which it originated, and all North of it including the Custom House, which was bounded by the public square. The loss of property is estimated at 620,000. The House in which the fire commenced, (says the Herald) belonged to the estate of Sanchez; and was the sole depen dence of two orphans. The building next to it was occupied by Samuel Cook, and be longed to the Burgos estate. The third : building belonged to the Marquis Fougueres and was occupied by R. Gibson, Esq, The fourth which was the Custom-House and ( buildings attached thereto, and occupied by John Rodman, Esq. (he Collector, was the , property of the U. States” Exclusive of the loss of buildings, there was considerable property destroyed—particularly that ot 1 Mrs. Campbell and Mr. Cook. A Mr. War burg, a boarder at Mrs. Campbell’s, wasun- j j able to escape from the flames, but by get ting on the roof of the house, w here he lost ■* |his hold and fell from a height of 4U or 50 1 ifeet. He fortunately had none of his hones broken, but very much injured his head and chest. — Pat. t DIED.—At New-Haven, Conn, on the Bth inst. ELI WHITNEY, Esq. aged 59. , His mind was distinguished by uncommon , 'powers of invention, and was at the same time accurate, firm, and decisive—hisdis- ■ position was just, humane and beneficient. i Perhaps no man has ever produced so great I an effect on the industry, wealth and com-!, merceofhis country. Before he invented! the gin for cleaning upland cotton, the fibre j of that article was separated from the seed, my the human hand, and it was cultivated | only for domestic uses. In consequence ol that invention, it now forms the greatest, and most important staple of America—in bulk sufficient to give employment to more than five hundred ships, and an annual value of not less than twenty millions of dollars.
